    1. [NCBLADEN-L] "Wiley" CAIN, CSA (born 1823-1825)
    2. In a message dated 1/29/2002 3:19:58 PM thejimcooke@yahoo.com writes: < have found five CAIN families in Bladen County, NC in the 18th century that I can not connect. > Jim, I read an old post on a message board the other day which repeated a family legend of a lost CAIN family bible. Supposedly, there were 7 brothers who early came to the Cape Fear region from Ireland; this CAIN family was originally of Scotland. The same note said that these brothers moved inland from the coast with several going their own way and ending up in MO, TX and SC. The brothers who stayed in NC are among those whose descendants are found in Bladen and Cumberland counties. The "lost" bible passed to the hands of a descendant family whose surname is not CAIN. Of course, I have no idea about the accuracy of this legend. I did manage to find the military history of Wiley CAIN. He enlisted in Cumberland county at age 38 on 24 OCT 1863 for 3 years. He was present or accounted for with the "Bladen Stars Battery" of 36th Regiment of NC Troops (2d Regiment of NC Artillery) until transferred to company E of the same regiment on 18 July 1864. He served with "E" Battery at Ft Fisher during the engagement 24-25 DEC 1864 and was captured when Ft Fisher fell 15 January 1865. He remained a prisoner at 1st at Point Lookout, MD and later Camp Elmira, NY until prisoner release on 30 June 1865 after signing the required Oath of Allegiance. I thought it interesting that this Wiley CAIN signed up to serve with a Battery led by Bladen county officers. Wiley and his son, George W. Cain are found with their families in the 1870 and 1880 census of Cross Creek, Cumberland, NC. I am still uncertain if "Wiley" was his real name or middle name that he went by. I have been unable to find the burial sites or death records of either George W. CAIN or his father, Wiley. Would appreciate any further info on these men or their relatives. 3. Elizabeth, I doubt that the father of Margaret was Norman Morrison. >From # 118 paraphrased 1843 March 15 NORMAN MORRISON names wife Christian, children Daniel Morrison, Catherine, wife of Lauchlin McDonald, Margaret, Effey, widow of Charles McKinnon, Sarah, wife of James McEachin, and Alex. Morrison. Notice that his daughters marriages are all referred to except Margaret's. I would think this indicates that she wasn't married at the time of his death, 1843. Your Margaret married around 1819/20. If you follow the naming pattern: Daniel's father's name was Robert Charles, his mother's name was Elizabeth. The only problem with this theory is that the third daughter would have been named for the mother and you have Margaret as the fourth daughter. My Daniel Campbell married Margaret Morrison who was born in NC 26 Jan 1796. They were married around 1819/20, possibly in Telfair Co., GA. I don't have the father of Margaret for sure either--Possibly either John or Norman Morrison. The names of their children were: Catherine, Elizabeth, Ida, Margaret, Robert Charles, Sarah, Caroline and Columbia. He later married a Mary McLain. That's all I have. Possibly the name of his only son, Robert Charles might provide a clue. Thanks so much for helping. Elizabeth

    3. Good morning, Birt, although it will be afternoon before we finish wading through this. I have been going through books for the last hour and I think I will just send you what I find as I find it. There is a lot of information available on the children of both John and James but I will leave those alone until you tell me otherwise. A lot of the entries that I'm sending you will be as much to "disprove" as to "prove" so watch the dates, names and locations. Frequently I will give you only the fact that I have something and you must let me know if you don't have it and want it. I will not attempt to group the entries into which person it refers to. The number that I use at the beginning of each entry refers to a corresponding bibliography. Click on the URL below my name and you will find a list of the books that I have. For the dozens of books that aren't on the url I will give you that cite as needed. >From # 141 1. The Will of Mary Laroche, Charleston, dated 31 Aug. 1759 2. I think the solution is going to have to be found in marriage records for the two John LaRoches, Lidie Marye Horry, Mary Horry, and as an additional possibility, -- <Mary Magdalene Horry Birth: 1715 Craven, South Carolina Christening:Death: 29 Aug 1767 Prince George Parish, Horry County, South Carolina.> I hope you might have time to see if any of these marriage records exist. 3. Hi Y'all, I'm looking for information on the licensing of two early Rowan county ferries. I haven't found either in the Rowan records, which puts them before 1753. If they were licensed between 1750 and 1753, that would have been done in Anson county, and the records are lost. I'm hoping against hope they were licensed in Bladen county before 1750. Hopefully it would be in the court records. I'd really appreciate any references. 1. John Long's ferry on the Yadkin (Adkin/Atkin) River. It was a little west or north of the Trading Ford. Hard to come up with another geographical reference. Salisbury didn't exist before 1755. The two nearest settlements were the Jersey and Cathey's/Irish. 2. Trading Ford ferry on the Yadkin (Adkin/Atkin) River. Could also mention the Trading Path or the island. I don't know the person involved. HELP! It apparently did not matter that the Indians owned it. Likewise, VA guys served in NC and SC for about the same reason. One Godwin I know was from VA, served in a NC unit and was killed in SC at the last battle for NC involvement (Eutaw Springs). I think he did it to get away form his wife. No kidding. However, there were more battles were in SC than NC. Many from NC units went down and helped SC with the battles in SC. SC saved NC in the Tuscarora Indian War in 1711-1715. NC returned to favor 65 years later. In the GA land lotteries, they wanted people to settle the land and all people were eligible. War Veterans and War Widows got two draws. The battle for Savannah was a big lose for the colonials. General Ashe of New Hanover Co. NC was court marshaled. Geats Defeat was the battle of Camden and another big loss. Also the battle of Charleston was a loss. Both wins in the south were in SC and they were the Battle on Cowpens and Kings Mountain. I mean before Yorktown of course but that was Washington who forced Cornwallis to surrender in that battle. Several more battles took place in SC but none in NC or VA. Charleston was not a free city for sometime after Cornwallis surrendered. There was no money, so the states promised land. Mostly Indian Land. The Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge took place early in the war, Feb. 1776 and that was a lopsided win for us and that keep the war out of here for four years. Then in 1781, it came. I know zilch about Tennessee but the ONE book (# 152) I have lists a William Parker receiving a North Carolina land grant in Tennessee. Then go step by step back in your search, looking at cementery and census records and other things. I saw the Cottle name as a purchaser on a Duplin Co. estate sale (not a Cottle) for someone in mid-1800s, so they are there at least that far back. Good luck. Sarah

    3. Hi Murphey, The url you sent "cannot be displayed". York County was named for the York County, Pennsylvania settlers. It was formed in 1785 as part of Camden District. In 1791 York and its neighboring Chester County were realigned as part of Pinckney District. In 1800 almost all of the "counties" were made "districts" and in 1868 all of the "districts" were made "counties". You still with me? York is on the South Carolina-North Carolina border and from 1785 til 1850 York shared a line with North Carolina's Mecklenburg and Lincoln counties. From 1850 to 1878 York shared a line with North Carolina's Cleveland, Gaston and Mecklenburg counties and now it borders Mecklenburg and Gaston counties only. I certainly hope there will be no more changes for awhile. He may not have "moved" from Buncombe County to Haywood County - Haywood was formed from Buncombe in 1808 but the dividing line wasn't run and marked until 1830. I need to see the URL on Bonner Bird before I see what I have on him. Did you copy the information and can you cut and paste it to me? How is your FRIDAY line coming along?
