I asked several older family members about the use of Surnames as first names in our family. I was told that many times our family would use surnames of families that were close or respected by our family as first names for their children. You will find the name Streety used as a first name in both the Cain and Davis families. Also the last name Richardson is used as a first or middle name in many children. Most of these families lived very close to one another.

Hi Paula, Well, I have been working on this one since about five this morning and I can only find the Will of James (1660-1729) and a possible mention of James Junior (1707-1790) in the Will of Epaphroditus Moore of Bertie in 1757 mentioning his son-in-law James Howard. I notice that from the Will of James (1660-1729) you have not listed his son Samuel. Dee For a detailed bibliography on the reference sources used for lookups, refer to this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbladen/lookups.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, June 13, 2005 11:05 PM Subject: Re: Bladen_County_lookup Dear Dee, Thank you so much, you are sweet to check so many sources for me, but I made a mistake in my request. The men I am looking for were in Bertie, not Bladen, County and the reason I requested the look-up in those books was because they were general NC books that we do not have here. This is a new line of inquiry for me. I knew that my gggg grandfather came from Lincoln County, NC to Rutherford County, TN to Greene County, IL to Harrison County, IA over the course of his 85 years. It was only in seeking the names of his parents in the Lincoln County, NC Deed books by Dr. Pruitt that I came across a "deed" that spoke of the division of property between the children of William Howard (that included my ggg grandfather Henry Howard and his siblings). Of the entries that you sent me, I believe From # 11 Howard, James, 010 [Bertie County], c 1729 Orig only, SS/AR may be the will my James Howard From what you sent me, it seems there were a great number of Howards in NC during those years and inconveniently for their descendents they all repeatedly used the same first names for their children. All of William Howard's children appear to have been born in Lincoln County, NC, so he may have moved there from Bertie County as early as 1773. As I said before, this is the very beginning of inquiry into James Howard (1660-1729), his son John Howard (1718-1776) and his son William (1747-1816), so in answer to your question, I have not exhausted all of the sources here in TN, particularly at the TN State Library and Archives. I do appreciate your help in this and will gladly do look-ups in return at the TSLA if you have any Tennessee ancestors that you need help with. Paula

Jason, You have all the Cemetery and Bible books don't you? The Bladen Will of a Richard Singletary (nd) names daughter Sidney. There is a vast Singletary family in Georgia with origination in NC. Interested? All of the names are familiar. Sarah Singletary is 82 in the 1880 census of Georgia as was Sidney Singletary, b. NC, 11 Aug 1811, d. 28 Jan 1894, GA. Married William J. Singletary, b. 15 Oct 1815, died Thomas, GA 2 June 1891. They were married 19 Sept 1839 in Thomas, GA. I have a number of children fopr them with birth dates. I also found the family tree of the Hendons (Hannah's family) back six or so generations. I have John Young's children and their dates. His wife is shown as Mrs. Elizabeth Young before their marriage. One of the submitters of this information is an Al King ([email protected]) and he uses Bladen resources so he has ties to there.. What do you need if anything? Hi Paula, I cannot respond to "any other information about their families" without knowing every thing that you already have. I need specific questions. I am going to list even names of your men when we know the dates eliminate them in case you discover sons and nephews down the line. As for the location of James and sons: From # 135 Bladen County Tax Lists of 1776 John Howard 2 Whites 3 Male Slaves 2 Female Slaves Total 7 Bladen County Tax Lists of 1779 John Howard 350 acres William Howard Bladen County Tax Lists of 1786 William Howard 1 white male from 21 to 60 3 white females Total 4 From # 10 Howard, James, Sampson County, 1784 Howard, James, Halifax County, 1783 Howard, James, Bertie County, 1774 Howard, James, Onslow County, 1771 Howard, James, Jr, Hertford County, 1779 Howard, James, Sr, Hertford County, 1779 Howard, John, Bute County, 1766 Howard, John, Rowan County, 1761 Howard, John, Granville County, 1785 Howard, John, Wilkes County, 1782 Howard, John, Granville County, 1771 Howard, John, Richmond County, 1790 Howard, John (Quaker), Craven County, 1779 Howard, William, Albemarle County, 1679 Howard, William, Tyrrell County, 1784 Howard, William, Warren County, 1784 Howard, William, Granville County, 1771 Howard, William, Jr., Carteret County, 1779 From # 11 Howard, James, 010 [Bertie County], c1729 Orig only, SS/AR Howard, John, 085 [Rowan County], c1781, WB-C/114, AR Howard, John, 028 [Craven County], 1780, Orig only, AR Howard, John, 044 [Granville County], 1779, WB1/212, CTY Howard, William none even close to the right dates I have read all of the entries in the remaining books (and there are over a hundred) and have tried to cross-reference the names were dates are appropriate with no luck. These are all single entries (showing only one of your three names) with no way to ascertain if this might be YOUR James or John or William. So let's try it backwards. Do you have or have you already checked all of the Bladen County Deed books? Bible, everything in Bladen? The books i am most interested in are: NORTH CAROLINA TAXPAYER, 1679 - 1790, VOLUME 2 (see companion book # 131) Compiled by Clarence E. I checked the Tennessee Library and Archives here and we do not have the above books. I know this is a lot to ask, but I would appreciate anything that you have time for Thank you, Paula Snyder Nashville, TN

Hello C Cain, I have a LOT of Edges, and Cains, and other names in my files you may be interested in if you would like to share. Also there is going to be an Edge Reunion held in Autryville at Mt. Carmel Church of God of Prophecy. If you would be interested in attending please let me know and I will give directions and times and all. There is no charge. There may be an offering taken to help with paper product expenses and we are asking that all families who attend bring enough food for their family plus two more so no one leaves with an empty stomach. Last year there was enough food for an army, AND we had a great time! You would be very welcome. It is coming up SOON so please get back to me if you are interested.
