You have a major library. It is wonderful that you have volunteered to share it by your time and efforts. I know that I am very appreciative of you and the many others like you who are helping me to document my family history. Since you asked, my 4th ggrandfather John Baugh and his wife Rosannah Waters were in Laurens County, SC from at least 1785 until about 1800 when they relocated to Kentucky. According to my calculations they should have married about 1770 but I have never been able to locate documentation of that fact. It's also possible my 3rd ggrandfather, Philemon Baugh married Mary "Polly" Norris in Laurens, SC about 1795. Could you at your conveinience check your references #8, 122 through 129, 299, 303, and 360? The only references I have been able to identify any of them in is Baptist Church histories (Turkey Creek, Poplar Spring, Raeburns Creek) and the 1790 census for Laurens Co. Rosannah and her family came to SC sometime after 1760. I don't know when John got there or from where although some reseachers claim he was born in England about 1743, but where he immigrated, when and where he was located until 1785 are still mysteries to me. Many of their children claimed to! have been born in NC. Thank you again for your assistance. Jack
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Swindal/Swindle/Swindell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/HSB.2ACE/1624 Message Board Post: Can anyone identify these Samuel Swindles? Samuel Swindle of Hyde County North Carolina appears to have been born about 1768. The records there indicate he married Eleanor Carawan by 1793. He first appears in the census there in 1800, which might indicate he had just become of age or head of a household. He is listed as being 26-45 years of age, his wife was 16-26 years of age and they had four children, two boys and two girls under the age of 10. If you assume the youngest was 0-1 and add two years for each birth you get the date of 1793 that is used indicating his possible marriage year. According to the census Samuel would have been born from 1755 to 1774. Having married about 1793 and the normal marriage age for men at this time being 25 years you can subtract and get the birth date of circa 1768. In February of 1804 William Carawan, probably Eleanor’s father, was granted letters of Administration and a petition to lay off one year’s provisions to Eleanor and five children. It would appear that Sa! muel Swindle was dead by this time. No will has been found for this Samuel Swindle. The names of Samuel and Eleanor’s children are not recorded. Samuel Swindle possibly the son of Josiah Swindle was born about 1754 in Hyde County, North Carolina. He died about 1808 in Bladen County. Samuel is believed to have moved to Bladen County, North Carolina from Hyde County in the late 1700's. Samuel Swindle married a lady named Mary. Mary’s last name is not known. Samuel and Mary Swindle had children: Willis Swindle Samuel Swindle Henry Swindle b. abt. 1776 James Swindle There is a document dated 07 Jun 1807 in Bladen County, North Carolina for a Samuel Swindall, which indicates that at the time of his death Samuel’s wife was named Mary. This document reads: “State of North Carolina Bladen County Know all men by these presents that Samuel Swindall Sen. of the County and State aforesaid planter for the love good will and affection which I have and do bare for my well beloved wife Mary Swindall and for divers other good causes and considerations me hereunto moving have given and granted and do by these presents do give and grant unto the said Mary Swindall during her natural life four negroes to wit: Nan Cuffo Salim and Lucy together with the third part of my stock and household furniture which negroes and other property after her death shall be equally divided between my four sons Viz: Willis, Samuel, Henry and James Swindall which property I the said Samuel Swindall do for myself my heirs executors administrators and assigns warrant and forever defend unto them their heirs and assigns as above directed against any lawfull claim or claims but be it remembered that the said Samuel Swindall will have the use of said property during my natural life the same as tho 99 t! his deed of gift had never been given and likewise be it remembered that the said Mary Swindall must not move the above mentioned property out of said County without the consent of my sons Viz: Willis, Samuel, Henry and James. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th of June in the year of our Lord 1807. Samuel Swindall (seal) May Term 1808: This deed was proved by John High and ordered to be registered. J.S. Purdie, C.C.” Since Samuel only gave one third of his property to his wife, Mary it can be assumed the other two thirds went to his sons. Records indicate Samuel Swindall died in Hyde County about 1808. It is not clear if Samuel Swindall is one in the same as the Samuel Swindell who married Eleanor Carawn by 1793 in Hyde County, North Carolina but many researches say he is. In the 1800 North Carolina Census there were three Samuel Swindles listed, two in Bladen County, Sr. and Jr., and one in Hyde County. For this Samuel to have had a son Samuel who is listed as head of household in 1800 he would have had to have been married by at least 1775 making his birth year as early as 1750. This Samuel had a son, Henry about 1776 making him too old to have been one in the same with the Samuel of Hyde county. It is believed another son, James was born about 1880. There is also a record in Bladen County when Henry turns over his inheritance rights over to a Samuel Swindle. In this record it is stated that his mother’s name was “Mary Smith”. This record also says Henry Swindle of Greene Co. NC indicating he was living there at that time. This Mary is most likely the widow of Samuel who had remarried. Some researchers claim the Samuel Swindle of Bladen Co. was the one who married Eleanor Carawan about 1793 but how could this be if he was married to Mary in 1776 and she was his widow in 1807? Are these the same person or separate people?
Hi Jack, They are not listed in these three books nor are they in # 336 (Cumberland Bibles). I did find a JOHNSON CEMETERY-CEDAR CREEK TWP. From Tabor Church Road, take a left on Ed Dudley Road. Dr. Peacock says in his Leonard Locke book (p. 89) that proof of the marriage is found in the Bible Record of Joseph Wilson, son of Sylvanus. Would you check you Cumberland Co. book # 336 and the Bladen Co. books @ 1, 46,47,48 and 49 for that Bible Record? Thank you for your wonderful look-up service. Lanell Saeger [email protected]

I hope this is not too much to ask for. If it is, I understand and I certainly appreciate the help you've given me. Peggy Trevathan
