Eliza Shipman Nance, however, does not have an extant cemetery marker in the Shipman Cemetery, located in Columbus County on HWY 701. There were many broken markers reported by Dorothy B. McCall when she surveyed this cemetery 29 Jan 1985. Maybe Eliza's was one of those. Nadine

    2. Dee Thompson
    3. Hi Kirby, That book that you mentioned is a description of tribes, their locations, migrations, wars, leaders, etc. and is regarding a period much earlier than you are interested in. In fact, almost every book that I own is far too early for your research. I deal mostly in the 1600s, 1700s and on a very limited basis, the mid 1800s. I'm sorry I'm no help. Yes, my husband's line from Bladen County, NC has native American influence. A father and son were Indian traders and both married Tuscarora or Lumbee women (in the 1700s). Dee For a detailed bibliography on the reference sources used for lookups, refer to this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbladen/lookups.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: kirby To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2005 1:29 PM Subject: other books you have... hi, Dee I noticed on your website, that you have several NC-related books. I have some 'other' families I'm researching who are from NC... would you mind having a look, at your convenience? one book I saw was 7. NATIVE CAROLINIANS: THE INDIANS OF NORTH CAROLINA Theda Perdue, Division of Archives and History, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, Raleigh, 1985, purchased from Frontier Press, $5.00 I have a Cora Alice BILLINGS [1872-1948] who md George Washington COX [ca1872]; I have been told that Cora was Cherokee. I have found her parents' marriage bond [I think]: Robert H BILLINGS & Mary COLLINGS 16 Feb 1858, and I have found a few census records, though they get murky... the most difficulty I have is finding anyone among Indian Rolls [Dawes etc], and I know many who could 'pass' went on the census as white, etc. I'm wondering if your book, listed above, would help at all... my partner is quite interested in 'proving' any First Nation ties, as she is often asked about her heritage, based on looks alone. as you no doubt are also researching First Nation lines, do you have any 'clues' for me? I'm really just starting to dig on these NC roots, although I've been at this 'craze' we call genealogy for the better part of 2 decades... thanks! kirby in NC [email protected]

    3. Hi Vicki, This church was founded FOR and BY Scotch-Irish Presbyterians in 1756. It is not a large cemetery and was filled to capacity in 1888. Many, many graves are unmarked. No Native-American connections at all. From # 441 DEAN, MARTHA ANNE D. 11-29-1861 Row 18/Grave No. 11 Aged 39 yrs., 6 ms., 5 ds. Wife of Dr. Y. S. Dean Widow of William Howard HOWARD, DR. JAMES P. B. 12-5-1837/ D. 7-1-1862 Row 38/Grave No. 2 An affectionate husband and a kind master, popular as a man, and successful as a physician, his loss was widely felt and deeply lamented but he had hope in his death, and his end was peace. "The Fourth Creek Burying Ground is a sloping rectangle surrounded by a thick wall with two iron gates. Within this wall lie our Scotch-Irish ancestors who fought the Indians, gave their lives to free this country from British rule, and distinguished themselves in the Civil War. The graveyard is more like a garden than a cemetery. Rising from a broad green carpet of grass are towering hemlock, spruce, white pine, holly, and magnolia trees. Along the walls and walks are ancient boxwoods, crepe myrtle, lilac, and barberry bushes. In winter these timeless sentinels stretch their long shadows on glistening snow; in summer they create a refuge of cool dignity. Directly opposite the gates are stone benches, built into the walls; and to outline the whole is a slender rock path that winds around the shrubs and markers as though it wished to give them the deference they deserve." Dee For a detailed bibliography on the reference sources used for lookups, refer to this link: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbladen/lookups.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: Vicki Reynolds To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, August 28, 2005 7:15 PM Subject: Bladen_County_lookup Please look up the following names in book #441 'A History of Old Fourth Creek Congregation, 1764-1964, Now the First Presbyterian Church of Statesville, NC and Fourth Creek Memorial Burying Ground, 1756'. Dean, Martha A (Howard), may have died in childbirth. Griffin, Harriett (Howard), husband's name unknown Howard, Alvin Howard, Elizabeth (married to Alvin) Howard, Alvin Branson & Belvidere Howard, Amanda Howard, James P & Mary (Sephens/Stephenson) Alvin & Elizabeth Howard resided in Iredell Co, Statesville, NC and are listed in the 1830-1870 census records for said county. The remaining above names are their children. I believe they were Native American, possibly Cherokee and perhaps of mixed blood. Is the Fourth Creek Burying Ground for Native American burials and, if so, were only Indians buried there? Thank you so much! Have a nice day! Vicki
