This relates to the message posted on 12/3/05, Subj: Samuel Porter I don't have details on the family of Samuel Porter (or if he is related to the Porters below), but I am showing the lineage from James Henry Porter (m. Sarah Cooper) down to Riles Alex Porter below. Please note that I am using the first name as "James" for Henry Porter who m. Sarah Cooper because a monument in the old Porter Cemetery in Kelly, NC shows the names as James Henry Porter and Sarah Cooper whereas our research for this Porter has revealed the name as Henry Porter in Court minutes for Sampson County for the period 1800-1840. Also Henry Porter is listed in the 1810 and 1820 US Census for Sampson County. James N. Porter was in Sampson County in 1840 based on some Feb 1840 court minutes. The first appearance of James N. Porter in the Bladen Census was in 1850 when he was age 37 which would indicate a YOB of 1813. There was a James Porter in the 1830 Sampson Co. Census age 20 and under 30 who had two sons under 5 but the ages for the sons didn't fit James N. Porter as a son. Gen 1: James Henry Porter b.1775-1785 m. Sarah Cooper b.1789 Gen 2: James N. Porter b. 1813-1815 m. Nancy Butler b. 10/20/1814 Gen 3: Young Riles Porter b.7/3/1852 m. Francenia Edwards b.3/27/1856 Gen 4: Riles Alex Porter b. 2/13/1891 m. Pauline Priest b. 8/24/1898 Some researchers on Porters have missed the generation of James N. Porter b. 1813-1815 who married Nancy Butler b. 10/20/1814 of Sampson County. The names of James N. Porter (and wife Nancy's) children provided clues that led to the discovery of Nancy's maiden name (Butler) and earlier ancestors and relations including Cooper, Coore, Royal, and Blackman, etc. Wayne A. ---------------------Message posted 12/3/2005---------------------- On Samuel Porter & Sarah of Bladen County, I think they had at least four sons, maybe even some daughters. This family (or parts of it) relocated to Anson County by about 1810. A James Duncan of Anson signed an affidavit in 1838 stating that his father was James Duncan, and that his mother was a daughter of Abraham Hill and sister of Revolutionary Pension Applicant, John Hill. This affiant, I've concluded, is the one known in Anson as "James Duncan, Sr.", who married Mary Coburn and was father of James Ross Duncan, my Great-Great-Great Grandfather. Do you have any info on the earliest Duncan family of Bladen/Roberson and/or possibly New Hanover ? Thanks.

Thanks so much Allen. I had not found one either the last time I looked but that was a few years ago now. I thought maybe I had missed something when I found a death certificate listing it as a place of burial. I think that particular one I was sure wound up being in the Sykes Cemetery. It was the burial place of Clem Ray. I wonder if it also went by the Ray Cemetery at the time? The Courthouse is wonderful by the way for those who have not used it before. I went out with $20.00 worth of copies a couple of years ago. I had my mother and daughter with me and we cleaned house. That was on Edge certificates alone! I wish I could go down and spend a couple of days. They even took me down in the basement to some OLD records to do some looking. They are very accommodating to say the least. Thanks again. Could someone on the list who has the cemetery transcriptions for Bladen County please look to see if there is a Sarah Jackson or a Mahala Jackson listed in them for me? Sarah should be the wife of G.W. Jackson and Mahala one of their daughters although it looks as though he had two daughters named Mahala and possibly from two different wives according to the census. There may be a spelling difference for Mahala but it should be close. Thanks in advance for the look up.
