Hi Tim, Yes, the books are mine and I, too, am in Atlanta. I would suspect that William's wife Flora was Flora McDonald, daughter of Archibald McDonald. The McDonalds lived next door to William and Flora in the 1850 Census of Bladen. A daughter, Flora's age was enumerated in the home of Archibald McDonald, with 5 siblings, in the 1840 census but was missing in 1850, although 5 children were still in their father's house. Archibald's mother, I believe, was named Flora and she died in 1847. I also suspect that William was married once before Flora, possibly to Sarah Middleton, in Chowan County on Oct 7, 1834. She was the daughter of William Middleton. William Harrell is shown as being from Gates County. All of the above is speculation but I'll see what I can do to prove some of it. I believe that your line came to NC from VA. I don't take clients that come from the Bladen List. Is this a private library ? or is this the Bladen Historical Society ? Anyway, I'd love to have someone help me with my family research. I realize that this email address is for very specific lookups, but would I be able to compensate you for more general research ? My male lines are filled with stories of people, passing away young and it's hard to find data. I believe my GGgrandfather to be William Harrell, born about 1808. I find him in the Berrien County , Georgia , 1860 census with wife that looks to be Flora Ann Harrell and children. I believe that census has him being born in SC or NC and an earlier census in 1850, Bladen County, NC indicates he was born in the other state. Two of the children match ( in both census) and the age is approximately correct and the matching children are listed as born in NC in both census. In the 1850 , Bladen, NC census, the wife is clearly , Flora Ann. I'd love to find out where he and his family were before 1850 and what Flora Ann's maiden name was. I'd be happy to give reasonable compensation to anyone who would spend time searching sources I don't have immediately available. Would you be kind enough to help me ? Thanks, Tim Harrell Atlanta area
Hi Shannon, Those are the directions given in the cemetery book. There are two other people buried there, you might as well have the complete inventory. JOHNNIE HORNE, son of T.E. & ANNIE HORNE, B&D May 8, 1904 MRS. ELIZABETH SIMPSON, Oct. 8, 1829--Mar. 12, 1872 Perhaps someone from Bladen can help with the cemetery's location. Does anyone have geographic coordinates for the Luke Sykes Cemetery, a.k.a. McDuffie Cemetery? The location is described in the Cemetery book Vol III as S of Hwy 53, 4.3 miles NW of the intersection of Hwy 242 and Hwy 53, back of the W. A. What I have gleamed from census is that Ferebe is listed as Ferebe J Robeson (age 18) living in the household of Elizabeth Ellis Robeson with her husband Gooderum Robeson. Sarah is listed in the household of Nathan Bryan age 11. Gooderum & Ferebe were married 10 Jan 1850 & Gooderum (Goody) died 27 Oct 1850. We do not have marriage date for Ferebe to any others ( was there 2?). One World Family Tree has Ferebe listed as Ferebe Jane Bryan & also as Sarah Jane. This is not correct. Thank you so much for the information! Your efforts are deeply appreciated. Maggie
Bladen Heritage Book shows that Ferebee had a sister Sarah Jane who married Joseph E. Singletary. It seems unlikely that Ferebee would also be known as Sarah. 1860 census shows Joseph and Sarah Singleterry with son Nathan 7/12 yrs. Joseph was killed in 1864, and Sarah later married David Moore Singletary. Sarah Johnston
Jim --- According to our records Ferebe Bryan is also known as Sarah Jane Bryan, daughter of Nathan Bryan. She apparently first married Gooderum Davis Robeson, son of Samuel & Elizabeth Ellis Robeson. Gooderum or "Goody" as EE refers to him died shortly after they were married. Some of this material is listed in One World Family Tree on Ancestry.Com. I will also check further in EE's Dairy. Hi Cuz, My great-grandfather, David Jackson Grimes, was Moses Wesley Grimes' (later Thomas David Graham) brother. The rumor is Moses got in trouble with the Bladen County, NC sheriff about 1857 and chose to move south. I assume this is one reason he changed his name. The surname Graham is connection with Grimes. It may be like a clan name. One of Moses' uncles (Mercer Grimes, Jr.) change his name to Graham when he left NC for the South. When in Bladen County, NC, Moses lived about 10 miles west of Elizabethtown, NC. The mailing address would now be Tar Heel, NC. My Mother was born in the same area. I have Moses married to Ferebe with 3 kids that have the GRIMES surname and 3 with GRAHAM. His second marriage to Sarah C. Branch in 1867 resulted in 6 more little GRAHAMs. His third marriage to Betty Branch resulted in 2 more little GRAHAMs. (14 kids!) I have found no indication of Indians living in the Tar Heel area and, therefore, doubt that Ferebe would be of Indian blood. My GRIMES data along with other Bladen and surrounding counties can be found at http://cookes.us . I would appreciate anything you can add or correct! Maggie --- We have Ferebe Jane Bryan daughter of Nathan & Margaret Allen Bryan. Married to Gooderum Davis Robeson, son of Samuel Cain & Elizabeth Ellis Robeson. Date of Marriage - 10 Jan 1850. Gooderum died 27 Oct 1850. We have no second marriage for Ferebe. Nor are we aware that she may have been NA. I really doubt so - but not sure. Most of our info comes from the 'Dairy of Elizabeth Ellis Robeson" and the Robeson family book. Where & what dates do you have on Ferebe's second marriage. Do you have an obit on her? Interested in what all you may have. Ferebe Jane married Moses w. Grimes who is also listed as Thomas Graham, on Nov. 23, 1853. I don't understand the name change but it answers why my great uncle couldn't go any further back. He worked decades on the Townsend family into which Ferebe's granddaughter Ola Jane Harris married (she was Febere's dtr Galva Dora's dtr.). There's more to tell but I'm new at this and don't know the rules so please be patient as I am willing to share everything I have. In the 1860 Alabama census Thomas Graham is listed with his father, James W. Grimes but I didn't find the others. In the 1870 FL census he's already remarried. He remarried again after that. The family is heavy in Hernando Cty. history (which is now Citrus, Hernando and Pasco Cty's)and Ferebe isn't listed, having died approximately in 1865 or 66 as Galva Dora was born in 1856 or 57 and she was 9 when her mom died. Ferebe is buried in an Indian mound in Istachatta on the way to New Hope. Please let me know how best to present info and what you're interested in. There is no paper obit that we know of and the family bible was eaten by a goat so it's been a hard search. Thanks for writing and I hope to hear back soon. Maggie
