LIST, I am posting to the BERTIE list too as several researchers on these families in MARTIN county are interested as well. I don't know if they are all on the MARTIN list too. My great-grandfather was SAMUEL WHITLEY he was born SEPTEMBER the 9th 1850 at BEARGRASS, MARTIN county, NORTH CAROLINA, he married SARAH ELIZABETH "SALLIE" PEAL on the 15th of JANUARY 1874 in MARTIN county, NORTH CAROLINA. They along with several other families including the PEAL & HARRISON'S left there and moved to SAN SABA county, TEXAS. That is where my great-grandmother died on the 20th of JANUARY 1908. She is buried in NEAL cemetery at SPRING CREEK, TEXAS. Times where hard then and the mob ran wild around the area. They would go to a man's home and tell him to join them or they would kill him, many joined. One man decided to take his daughter to town thinking they would not harm either of them as long as his young daughter was with him, he was wrong, they found him shot to death with his young daughter by him crying, they showed no mercy. SALLIE told her family that she never saw SAMUEL in the bunch when they came to the house and asked for SAM WHITLEY, but she knew that was his horse in the back, they wore hoods to hide their faces. Uncle DOSS WHITLEY {their son} stated he once saw a bunch of them from a hilltop and started to shoot amongst them, but then decided he might shoot his own father so he decided not too. After SALLIES death SAMUEL slipped out in the middle of the night and was never heard from again, he had moved back to WILLIAMSTON, NORTH CAROLINA and remarried. The TEXAS RANGERS sent two RANGERS in to break the mob up. When SAMUEL moved back to WILLIAMSTON he remarried, this time to AMANDA COLTRAIN the daughter of JAMES WASHINGTON COLTRAIN & ALVANIA STALLINGS, they married on the 27 of JANUARY 1909. They named their ages and parents names on their marriage license, SAMUEL stated he was 55 years old his father was DARSEY WHITLEY and his mother was L.A. WHITLEY {LEAH ANN MOBLEY}. They were married by J.N. ROGERSON in BEARGRASS, the witnesses were AARON ROGERSON, SAM WHITEHURST & NATHAN ROGERS all of WILLIAMSTON. SAMUEL WHITEHURST signed the death certificate for SAMUEL WHITLEY but listed SAMUEL'S father as SAMUEL, which was wrong. SAMUEL was listed with his parents DARSEY H. WHITLEY & LEAH ANN MOBLEY (Sometimes listed as LARRY ANN MOBLEY} on the 1850 census of MARTIN county. some list SAMUELS year of birth as 1851 but was not, he was on the 1850 census. then age 10 on the 1860. SAMUEL'S brother WILLIAM age 5 and sisters SARAH age 7 and ANN age 2 were also on the 1860. DAWSON H. WHITLEY sold 200 acres to EASON BIGGS on the 2nd of JUNE 1873 with CALVIN AYERS and ABRAM BIGGS neighbors and was in the BEARGRASS township. more later BOBBY RAWLS BIG SPRING, TEXAS
