Laurie; There were Slades in Martin Co, NC. One lived on a farm where an Episcopalian church had been built which was one of the earliest churchs there. The minister was Rev James Lewis Wilson who lived at Williamson and preached both there and in Edgecombe. Co. at Tarboro. The church on the Slade farm was abandoned and Rev Wilson disappeared from records around 1800. The last record I have found for him was in Northampton Co. Don't know if that means anything to your search or not.
