    3. Dear Group, The following records are a few that I picked up from the archives. They are names I am working on but thought I would send them to the archives, maybe something will be of research help to others. I feel sensitive about the record type, however, they are records of people and people do what people do. Cathy Virginia, these are separate records. The following pages will contain the full verbatim record on the Bastardy Bonds of Bertie County for various surnames. Copies of the original were made in Jan. 2002 at the NCArchives by Cathy Hart Farris. These records are of people I am researching. ********** 1. "1739-1815, Bastardy Bonds, Bertie County, NC" CR 010.102.1 1778 Know all men by these presents that we William BRYAN, John OXLY and Joseph COLLINS all of Bertie County in the state of North Carolina are held and firmly bound unto the Justice of the County Court of Quarter Sessions of Bertie County in the sum of Fifteen pounds? one hundred pounds ___?___? money to be paid to the said Justices their sucessors and assigns to the payment where of we bind our selves our and __? of our Heirs Exors. & Adms. Jointly and Severally? firmly by those presents sealed with our seals and dated this XIII Day of May 1778. The Condition of the above obligation is such that when as one Elizabeth HEWS hath made oath that she is with child by the said William BRYAN Now if the said William BRYAN shall will and truly maintain the said child after it is born and indunific? the parish of Society from all charges and expenses ___? _____? by reason and for the maintenance of said Basterd Child and shall will and sufficiently maintain said child untill it is fit to bind out then this obligation to be void otherwise to be and remain in full force of __? COLLINS (shows their signatures...cathy) ************************************************************ 2. 1793 Bastardy Bonds 1739-1815 NCArchives CR 010.102.1 verbatim Know all men by these presents that wee William BRYANT SPIVEY and William RASCO of the state of North Carolina and County of Bertie are held and firmly bound unto the Justises of said county for the Just and full sum of two hundred pounds curent money of the state: To wich payment well and truly to be made to the Justises of Sd county for their sucessiors wee bind our selves our heirs Executors and Administrators jointley and severally by these presents sealed with our seales and dated this 27th of July 1793. The Condition of this oblegation is such that wheare as Elizabeth PEIRCE of the parish of Socitey in the county of Bertie single woman hath been Delivered of a bastard child with the aforesaid Parish which child the above bound William BRYANT SPIVEY stands charged with according to Law to be the reputed father therefore the said William BRYANT SPIVEY and William RASCO them their heirs Executor administrators or any of them do and shall from time to time and at all times forever hereafter agree discharge and save namely, the wardens of the poor and the parish of Society in the county aforesaid from all costs charges and troubles whatsoever for or by reason of the birth mantaneance or bring up said child and from all other suits charge and damages whatsoever touching or concerning the same then this oblegation to be void otherwase to remain in full force. Signed Sealed & Delivered in Presence of Abner EASON William BRYANT SPIVEY Wil William RASCO (all signed signatures...cathy) NOTE: Elizabeth PEARCE was a witness for the will of Michael BRYAN 1794. Michael is uncle to William BRYAN SPIVEY. Michael is brother to Jesse BRYAN. William BRYAN SPIVEY is son of Elizabeth CHURCHWELL/HARRELL/SPIVEY and Jonathan SPIVEY. They had two children William and Mourning BRYAN SPIVEY. Jonathan died abt. 1764. Elizabeth then married Jesse BRYAN, abt. 1768. These two children are mentioned in Jesse's will, Jesse did not add the name SPIVEY, he just said they were his children. Jesse died abt. 1775. He and Elizabeth had one child that I know of named Catherine. In later records the above William can also be found as Bryan SPIVEY. ****************************************************************** 3. Bastardy Bonds 1739-1815 NCArchives CR 010.102.1 verbatim 1801 29 November State of No. Carolina Bertie County: The Examination of Catharian HAYES in the county aforsaid taken before us Jesse BROWN and Jesse COTTEN two of the Justices of the said county this 29th day of November 1801- Who saith that she has been delivered of a bastered child and that Wm. HODG is the reputed father of the said child. Bastardy Bonds 1739-1815 NCArchives CR 010.102.1 verbatim 1803 20th day of February Warrant for William HODGES State of North Carolina Bertie County: Where as upon the Examination of Catharian HAYES taken upon oath before us Jesse BROWN and Jesse COTTON two of the Justices of the county aforesaid that says that she has been delivered of a bastard child and that the said child is likely to be come chargeable to the county and the said Catharian HAYES confessed that William HODG of the said county is the reputed father of the said child and hath charged him with the same these are therefore in the name of the state to command you to apprehend the said William HODG and cause him to be brought before us or any two Justices of the peace of this county to answer the complaints alledged against him as aforesaid. Given under our hands and seals the 20th day of February 1803. Bastardy Bonds 1739-1815 NCArchives CR 010.102.1 verbatim 1803 Patience CHURCHWELL and Needom BRYANT Bond Bastardy State No Carolina Bertie County: Know all men by these presents that we Patience CHURCHWELL and Needom BRYANT are held and firmly bound unto the Justices of the county aforsaid in the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds to be paid to the Justices on thine successors in office to the which payment will and truly to be maid we bind ourselves our heirs Exctr., and Adminsr., jointly and lawfully? by these presents sealed with our seales and dated the 19th day of October---- The conditions of the above bounded obligations is such that whence as the above bounded Patience CHURCHWELL stand, charged according to law With being the mother of a bastard child of which child has lately bin delivered now if the aforsaid Patience CHURCHWELL and Needom BRYANT heirs Exr., or Adm., or any of them do and shall from time to time and at all times here after acquit discharge and leave harmily? the overseers of the poor and inhabitance of the county aforsaid from all __ charges and troubles whatsoever for and by the reason of berth and maintanance of brenging up the said child and of and from all other charges in demand whatsoever touching, concerning the sum Then the above obligation to be a void to otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. Bounded Patience CHURCHWELL stand, charged according to law of being latly delivered of a bastard child and if the aforsaid Patience CHURCHWELL and Needom BRYAN their heirs, Extr., and Adm., or any of them do and shall from time to time and at all times, him after acquit discharge and truly harmless the overseers of the poor and inhabitants of the county aforsaid from tall the cost, charges and troubles whatsoever, for and by reasons of the birth, maintenence of and Bringing up the said child and from all other with charges and demand whatsoever, touching and conserning the same then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full fource and virtue. Bastardy Bonds 1739-1815 NCArchives CR 010.102.1 verbatim 1808 16th day April State of North Carolina Bertie County: Know all men by thee presents that we Nathan PAGE and William HIGGS are held and firmly bound unto the Justices of the county aforsaid in the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds to be paid to the said Justices or their successors in office for the which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs Executors and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 16th day of April Anno Domini 1808. The conditions of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound Nathan PAGE and Wm HIGGS stands security for Catherine KINEHORN who hath lately delivered a child now if the aforesaid Catherine KINEHORN her heirs executors or administrators or any of them., do and shall from time to time and at all times hereafter acquit discharge and save harmless the Oversears of the pore and the inhabitants of the county aforesaid from all costs charge, and troubles whatsoever for and by reason of the birth maintenance of and bringing up the said child and from all other suits chares and demands whatsoever tuching and concerning the same then the above oblegation to be void otherwise to be in full force and virtue signed before me, Lewis THOMPSON J. Bastardy Bonds 1739-1815 NCArchives CR 010.102.1 verbatim 1808 12 November Sarah KENNEHORN and Needham BRYAN State of North Carolina Bertie County: Know all men by these presents that we Sarah KENNEHORN and Needham BRYAN are held and firmly bound unto the justices of the county aforesaid in the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds to be paid to the Justices or their successor in office to the which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our heirs executors and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and date this 12thd day of November A.D. 1808 Whereas Sarah KENNEHORN single woman hath been delivered of a bastard child now the conditions of the above obligation is such that if the above bounded Sarah KENNEHORN and Needham BRYAN their heirs executors or administrators or any of them do and shall from time to time and at all times hereafter: acquit discharge and save harmless the overseers of the poor and inhabitants of the county aforesaid from all costs charges and trouble whatsoever for and by reason of the birth maintenance of and bringing up the said child and of and from all other suit charges and demands whatsoever touching and concerning the same: then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. Bastardy Bonds 1739-1815 NCArchives CR 010.102.1 verbatim 30 November 1811 State of No. Carolina Bertie County: Know ye all men that we Needham BRYANT, William W. JOHNSTON and John RUFFIN here held and firmly bound unto the Justice of Birtie County Court of Pleas and quarters session in the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid to the said Justices or there sucessors in office to the which payment will and truly to be maid we bind ourselves our heirs Executors and administrators jointly and severally firmly by these presants Seal with our Seals and dated this 30 Day of November anno Domino 1811. The conditions of the above obligations is such that where as the above bounded Needham BRYANT stands charged according to law with being the uputied father of a bastard child of which Elisabeth KENEHORN has sworn being now with child and of the aforesaid Needham BRYANT his heirs Execurtors or administrators or any of them as and shall from time to times and at all times here after acquit discharge and leave harmless the overseers of the poore all cost and charges of the above obligation of nul or other wise to remain in full force and virtue. Bastardy Bonds 1739-1815 NCArchives CR 010.102.1 verbatim 1813 Sally KINNAHORNE/Needham BRYANT Be it remembered that on the 18th September 1813, Sally KINNAHORNE, Needham BRYANT, Wm. W. JOHNSON and Samuel HAYS, came before us Lewis THOMPSON and Wm. BRITTON two of the justices of the peace for the said county and severally acknowledged themselves to owe to the Wardens of the Poor, that is to say the said Sally KINNAHORNE, Needham BRYANT Wm. W. JOHNSON and Samuel DEANS (HAYS is crossed out...cathy), Fifty pounds each to be respectively livied of their lands and tenaments, goods and chattles, if the said Sally KINNAHORNE shall make default in the condition underwritten. Lewis THOMPSON Wm.BRITTAN (their signatures..cathy) The Condition of the above obligation is such that if Sally KINNAHORNE, shall so support a child, (named George KINNAHORNE, about three years old) so that the said child shall not become chargeable to the county aforesaid then the above obligation to be void or else to remain in full force and virtue.
