Dear Group, I found this Grist Mill Petition by George RYAN, Esq. for the area of Salmon Creek. There are many signatures of people that live in the area. A William BRYANT is among them. To the Worshipful Court of Bertie County now sitting. the Petition of the under writen subscribers to the Worshipful Court of Bertie County, that whereas George RYAN Esq. hath petitioned to your Worships for and Order for building a mill cross the Herring Run or the Eastern most fork of Salmon Creek; Your petition is desire to inform your Worships that the said run is an Excellent place for fish, as they run up for some miles above the place where the said W. RYAN is desirous of building a mill, where your petitioners and many other people are yearly supplyed with fish, with very little trouble and expense;...And many of the people that are yearly supplyed with fish out of this run, are neither able to raise a sufficiency of meat to support their families, nor able to buy fish for them. Your petitioners therefore humbly prayeth that your Worships would take these things into consideration and not suffer the said W. RYAN nor any other person to build a mill cross His run nor stop it any other way, that is of so much benefit to poor people for fish, who will Infallibly suffer if they are deprived of getting fish without buying them; which will be the case if this run is stopt, as there is no other place these poor people can apply for fish without buying--- And your Petitioners as in duty bound will further pray(if there is more I don't have it...cathy) The petitioners have all signed their names below... of interest to me is William BRYANT...cathy David GASKINS, Wm S.
