I descend from an Exum Smith born 1823 of Wayne Co. NC, died Union Co. NC in 1900 also known as John Exum Smith. At age 13 he, as Exum Smith, was bound in Wayne Co. NC Court to Elisha Sasser husband of Esther Smith, daughter of Cullen Smith. These folks migrated to Anson Co. NC in now Union Co. NC. Parents of my Exum Smith also called John Exum Smith have not been found. I suspect there could be a connection to descendants of Benjamin and Tabitha Exum Smith. An Exum Smyth bought land from John Pickering on 4 Feb 1800 in Wayne Co. NC. A William Smith was a witness. Exum Smith sold this land on 28 Dec 1802 to John Parker. Witnesses were Alexander Smith and Nancy Smith. An Exum Smith, Benaja Herring, William Herring, Henry Sasser, Jacob Hering and Arthur Sasser were charged on 4 Oct 1823 with forcible entry and detaining - Wayne Co. NC Court. Exum Smith estate records appear in Oct., Aug., Nov 1823 & Spring term of Wayne Co. NC court records. No indication of wife, children or other relatives. No indication of cause of death. Next there is the following marriage bond: Groom: Smith, Exum Bride: Deloach, Betsey Marriage Bond Date: 6 Sep 1813 Record #: 071 01 181 Bond #: 000091965 Bondsman: Jesse Smith Northampton Co. NC This Exum Smith appears in the 1820 & 1830 Northampton Co. NC census records. Use of the Exum Smith name may indicate some family connections.
