The State of North Carolina conducted a census (possibly based on the tax records) in 1786 and 1787. It is in book form at most major libraries. THIS WAS A STATE CENSUS! In 1790 the FEDERAL Census was first taken and have been conducted every 10 year since then. Some States have conducted special censuses from time to time. James
