Just an FYI. I live a few miles from the National Archives Regional office in Fort Worth. The last time I visited I got to see how documents are being digitized. It turns out the the LDS family center had two people there doing the work on contract. They use high-speed, very expensive cameras, set above a table top. One individual was copying 3 X 5 Court Record cards from the 1940's and his handling speed was a blur. The system also does meta-data (OCR) capture of typed / printed information. I believe the software package was about $15K / machine.
