    3. Pete,   In answer to your question :   Edwin Conway, Sr. and Martha Eltonhead are my 9th great grandpaarents. I descend from their daughter Eltonhead Conway that married Henry Thacker, Sr.  Edwin Conway, Sr. was third clerk for Northampton Co., Va. and had land in Northampton, Lancaster and Middlesex counties in Va. His son Edwin married  Elizabeth Thornton.. and his grandson  son was Col. Edwin Conway that married Ann Ball.   As a background Martha Eltonhead had 4 sisters that came from England to Va. Here are 3 of them.   (1) Agatha Eltonhead married 3rd to Sir Henry Chicheley. He is a first cousin to Diana Skipwith. (2) Eleanor Eltonhead married 3rd to Col. John Carter for whom Diana Skipwith witnessed two deeds in 1665 using her maiden name. (3) Alice Eltonhead married 2nd to Henry Corbin.   Col. John Carter left a gift to my grandmother Eltonhead Conway that married Henry Thacker, Sr.   Pete, I have been told this part but haven't checked it out yet...... Both my Edwin Conway, Sr. and Col. John Carter were Godparents to two of Capt. Thomas Carter and Katherine Dale's children. Also, Letiticia Corbyn (Corbin) ... later became the wife of Richard Lee. ... stood as Godmother to Edward Carter eldest son with Diana Skipwith Dale, Edward Dale and my Edwin Conway, Sr. I understand Diana Skipwith married Col. Edward Dale and had a brother Grey Skipwith and their father was Sir Henry Skipwith from England.  _------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   >From Pete: Is there anyone on this list that is familiar with the Carter genealogy in  Bertie County during the 1700s? Katharine: She was married by Rev John Sheppard     Data in this report from Winborne Colonial History, Sally's Family Place, Barry Hayes, records furnished by Wiley Warren Harrell son of Louise Carter, plus personal research data by Pete Austin #1 with family connection with Peele and Knight Clan: dated  through 01-30-2009.         Captain Thomas Carter came to Virginia prior to 1652 from England. He was a Captain of Virginia Militia, Justice, Member of Council, Deputy Clerk of his County and a member House of Burgess in 1667. Thomas was twenty-one years of age when he came to Virginia. He had the distinguished title of Country Gentleman. His coat of arms proves that this family was from England and that he came from the Bedfordshire Carters Clan.         Captain Thomas Carter was married twice, bringing his first wife with him from England. Her name was not known. By this marriage he had three children, who all died young.         From his 2nd marriage to Katharine Dale they had ten sons and three daughters. She was the oldest daughter of Major Edward Dale. In 1655 - 1674 he was Clerk of Lancaster Co. From 1670-'71-79'-80 was High Sheriff and 1677-82-83 a member of the House of Burgesses. He was the father of Katharine Dale Carter that married Thomas Carter. Elizabeth's sister married Sir Grey Skipworth of England. Sir Grey was the 2nd son of Sir Henry Skipworth. The Skipworth family sought refuge in Colonial Virginia after King Charles the First was beheaded. They were Royalist and supported the Crown during the revolutions by Parliament. He and his family had to flee to save their lives. Sir Henry Skipworth at that time was the 1st Baronet of Presmould, Leicestershire, England.
