Elaine, I understand your frustration with the number of emails coming in to your mailbox from the Bertie List. To help ease your situation, I just switched you to "Digest" Mode --- this will enable you to have only 1 message every 12 hrs. and since it has an index at the top of the message, you can quickly see the topics and if nothing at all interests you, then quickly delete it. If after a couple of days of trying this, you don't like it, just let me know and I'll switch you back to receiving individual messages. The Bertie List is one of the oldest and most active lists in North Carolina. We have gone through very slow times and very active times. Whenever a topic like the present one -- "recipes" -- comes up, we do tend to get more emails. However, as has been stated earlier on the list, having general topics like this is very popular with most of the list. In fact, I think you are the only person that has spoken against this. Since Bertie County is so old, our subscribers range in their research interests from 1700's - present day. That is a long period, and naturally means that the interests of the subscribers is just about as wide. While you may consider this having nothing to do with genealogy, most of our subscribers are interested in knowing how our ancestors lived back in the old days of Bertie County. Rather than just having names and dates, these recipes, help us see them as real, living people, who lived in North Carolina, and cooked in ways that modern people may have completely lost. As far as Wills -- we'd love to have you submit some. Or visit the pages and see all those that have been submitted already. Remember also to look for "Courts" -- as that contains similar information that was not specifically a will. http://usgwarchives.net/nc/bertie.htm To submit a will, use the automated Forms: http://www.genrecords.org/ncfiles/ Be sure to let me know if you have any trouble submitting. Also I do hope you understand where we're coming from on the Recipe topic.
With the utmost respect, may I disagree with you and some others about the sharing of recipes on this list. I think this is a list for genealogical research and I do not understand the reasoning that this includes recipes. I also think it does not include the details of the houses and barns built by our ancestors, the manufacturing processes in which they may have been involved, the details of the crops they planted, how they cared for their animals, made their tools and a number of other related subjects. If recipes are considered proper for this list then these and any other subjects affecting our ancestors should also be allowed in the same detail as tomato pudding. Then the genealogical details, the reason for which this list exists, will be so buried that many of us will not have time to search for them. I personally favor saving and sharing old and new recipes but I suggest that this is a subject better handled on a list set up for that purpose. I do't mind the recipes at all. In fact, I made the tomato pudding-casserole and did not care for it but my husband loved it. One of my most prized possessions came from Bertie Co. in the area of Bakertown Rd. It is my ggggrandmothers old iron cooking pot which came to me from my grandmother and then my mother. When I met Neil Baker on the Bertie sight I went there and he showed me the homesites of all our ancestors on THe Thomas side and the graveyard on the old Thomas farm which is still in the family. And he was so full of information and stories about our kin!
