Linda, that is the one! I grew up in Christian county which is of course, next door Caldwell County, KY. The community the Nichols lived in was actually Lewistown. It is very near the border with Hopkins Co. I visited the Janie Nichols cemetery and found several ancestor's graves there. Carol In a message dated 8/19/2009 1:12:54 A.M. I've been researching this line for several years. This Nathaniel Nichols came from Hertford Co., and was b. abt 1749, was d. by 21 Oct 1834. Some researchers have guess his birth at around 1775, but in 1805, he was exempted from taxes due to old age (Christian Co. Order Book 1805-1809). His first wife is unknown, but he had four proven children b. bef. 1791 by her, and a fifth that is presumed his but not proven. His second wife was Susannah Ward, widow of James Newsom (also from Hertford Co.). They had four children together. After Susannah died, Nathaniel married Mary Edrington in 1830, but she sued him for divorce in 1831. No children from this union. Peter, we talked a few years ago. Nathaniel Nichols of Bertie Co. had a brother, Willis. I believe that Nathaniel Nichols from Hertford Co. is a son of Willis Nichols, but still searching for evidence to prove it. In Caldwell Co., KY, both Nathaniel Nichols from Hertford Co. b. ca 1749, and Nathaniel, son of Josiah Nichols from Bertie Co., b. ca 1775, lived in the Lewiston area, so I do think they were related but haven't been able to prove it yet. Neil did the research on our Thomas family and as far as I know he never found where Joseph thomas came from. Thanks Beth and all that have responded. We are adults and have no need for things to turn ugly. Our opinions like our ancestry is varied and I believe we are all entitled. Our Bertie list is one of the best around and I feel we are just one big happy family. Like all families we all have different beliefs but thankfully we can voice these without nastiness. Thank you all for continuing to make us the best and all of the support you are giving to me and all past coordinators. Dear fellow researchers, Pardon my delay in sharing this news with this list, which served as such a wonderful resource for me when I was doing genealogical research, reported in my book Pell Mellers. As I was preparing the book for publication, I became involved with the Melungeon Heritage Association, which is primarily focused on the Melungeons of East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and neighboring areas of adjacent states but also interested in all mixed ancestry groups of the Southeast. Bertie County is of interest to MHA because of its history of "free mulatto" families in the colonial era which can be connected to mixed ancestry groups throughout the region. Professor Arwin Smallwood of the University of Memphis, a Windsor native and author of the book Bertie County: An Eastern Carolina History, was one of the featured speakers at the annual event in West Virginia. His presentation was excellent and the audience loved it. Also very well received was Marvin T. Jones who gave a presentation on the Winton Triangle area in neighboring Hertford County. My blog post at the MHA website: www.melungeon.org describes the presentations and other activities at the 13th Union. We are now planning the 14th to be held next summer in Tennessee. In 2008 I was a presenter at the 12th Union, as was Todd Beckham whose Collins, Bunch, and Bazemore ancestors in Bertie were the focus of his presentation. (My "free mulatto" lines are Butler, Prichard, Cobb, Mitchell, and Cale.) So if anyone with Bertie roots shows up at a Melungeon event, you can be assured people will know where Bertie County is! Marvin T. Jones has put up a photo gallery from the 13th Union at his Chowan Discovery site: http://www.chowandiscovery.org/News/News.html Paul
I'm almost sorry for my original comment that started this. This group is a truly gentle and courteous bunch. On the other hand, I belong to over 30 lists, and believe me, most do not allow side "conversations" and many are severe in their condemnation. It just piles up too much specialty mail for those with general interest in the list. If I make a great "Smith" connection...I'll soon take it to a side conversation, or move it to a Smith list of appropriate region. Most other lists encourage similar approaches. I don't really appreciate the implication that those who disagree are "just interested in lineages..." and "care nothing for their ancestors." I've been doing serious genealogy for over 25 years. I've carried my sons in baby carriers through countless cemeteries (they are 18 and 25 now). I have photographed hundreds of tombstones, inventoried several large cemeteries, and volunteered many hours to transcribe photos others have taken for county lists. I've traveled throughout the southeast and interviewed distant relatives in search of anything I can learn about the lives and locations of my ancestors. I love genealogy, and don't consider myself a "collector" in any sense. Thank you for the opportunity to "speak". I will now be quiet, and enjoy the list. Carol, The other Nichols family I think you refer to was in Christian Co., KY (in a part that later became part of Caldwell Co.) by 1804. I have the following Carters connected to my Tayloe family. Turner Carter, who died before 1835 Bertie Co. married Sarah Collins Watson d/o John Watson, Jr. and Mary Lassiter. Sarah Collins Watson was of the same Watson family who married Jonathan Stanley Tayloe. The above mentioned Turner Carter was the son of Cullen Carter whose will was probated 1804 Bertie Co. and Margaret Rhodes. Margaret Rhodes was previously married to Thomas Leggett. Margaret's sister, Elizabeth Rhodes, married 1795 David Tayloe who was the father of Jonathan Stanley Tayloe. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lou Craig" <lcraig@myglnc.com> To: <ncbertie@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 9:06 PM Subject: Re: [NCBERTIE] Carter > Carol > > I have info on Annie Hasseltine Carter, b 7/31/1833 d 1/03/1854 who > married > Lewis Bond in 12/04/1851. Carol I have info on Annie Hasseltine Carter, b 7/31/1833 d 1/03/1854 who married Lewis Bond in 12/04/1851. They had two children, Clarrisa Anne Bond, b 1852 d ????? and Turner Carter Bond, b 12/26/1853 d 2/29/1940. Annie Hasseltine Carter's parents are "Unknown" Carter and Sarah Collins. Being that they named her son Turner Carter, it could have been for her father or grandfather; I do not know. Apparently Annie died just after childbirth. Turner Carter Bond lived in Bertie, was instructed in school by my great grandfather, Rev. Andrew Murdock Craig and was Sheriff of Bertie County. Wish that I had a recipe to enclose with this info. I respectfully disagree with both of you. When we ignore the lifeways of our ancestors then genealogy becomes merely names and numbers. Genealogy is about people, about roots and about lifeways. The way our ancestors lived formed the people we became. So, a few recipes and descriptions of homesites and barns, etc. should be welcomed. They bring life to, mostly faceless, people that are names and dates on our charts. How would one go about finding three children who were born and died between 1900 and 1910 in Bertie County since birth certificates were not recorded until 1913? Starkey Henderson Mizell and his wife, Sarah Adeline Mizelle (3 rd cousins), had 7 children, 4 of whom lived to adulthood. The three children who died were Cottie Rowena (for whom my aunt is named), Annie, and Jessie. Except for the fact that my aunt remembers hearing about these children when she was a child, we don’t know anything else about them nor where they may be buried. I have narrowed the timeframe because the 1910 census record for Bertie County shows that Sarah had 5 children, 2 of whom were living - *1910*; Census Place: *Windsor Ward 1, Bertie, North Carolina*; Roll *T624_1098*; Page: *32A*; Enumeration District: *9*; Image: *387*. Most of this 1910 record is spelled incorrectly but it is my family. It should say – Starkey Mizelle Sarah A. - wife Iva M. – son (b. July 1897) Charlie – daughter (b. 1909) The next child to survive (Bessie) was born in August 1911. The final child (Roy) was born in 1914. Cottie lived to be about 8 years old, I’m told. I have been unable to locate a 1900 census record for the family. Starkey died in 1916, so Sarah is alone with the children in the 1920 census. What are your suggestions? I no longer live in North Carolina so cannot get to the courthouse. I do have Ancestry.com but have not been able to locate them. Thanks. Pam

interesting...I have heard and found that there were 2 different Nichols families in Caldwell Co. What was interesting is that they had many of the same names. I'll do a little research and see if I can find the info. on the other Nichols family...seems like the other one had Nathaniel Nichols descendants, too. I descend from Evan Ragland and his wife Susanna Pettus though their son Stephen Ragland who was orignally in Virginia and who by 1730 was in North Carolina. I descend from his daughter Agnes Ragland who married Ephraim Merritt and after he died she married my next grandfather Joseph Langston ca 1760 in Granville County, NC. Stephen Ragland was described in NC deeds as from Hanover Co., Va. His daughter Agnes was born in Bertie Precinct ca 1734. I do not have a birth certificate for her. Stephen' Ragland's will is in Northampton Co., NC in 1747. By his death Stephen had accumulated 1, 690 acres of land and owned a tobacco warehouse and ran a ferry. His plantation is said to have been located on present day US Hwy 158 that crosses into Norhampton County. Stephen Ragland was Royal Tax Collector of Bertie Precinct at one time. I am trying to find more info on my family as they were in several NC counties as the new ones were formed. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Marianne Dillow Illinois
They are both related. Genealogy is family history. Family History is Genealogy. You can't separate the two. For those who are just interested in lineages for getting into DAR and SAR and care nothing for the lives of their ancestors then they should stick to their pedigree charts. I am also very interested in Genetic Genealogy. I want to find out what each of my ancestors died of. This enables us to find out what is hereditary in our families and make us aware of what to look for in the future in our grandchildren. I am handicapped (Legally bind since birth) and notice over the years that others on this site are also interested in this. I have seen posts related to other eye problems I am related to a lot of folks in the Bertie area, being descended from Rev. Joseph W. White and George W. Cobb, Squire Billy. This is something that might save lives in the future. We have to face the future with an open mind. Nina Cobb In a message dated 8/18/2009 5:45:58 P.M.
