Hey Irene, I do have some information on the children of George and Lodema. I am interested in their daughter, Eva, who married Robert Dempsey. I am helping a friend research her Dempsey family. I would love to share information with you. I would suggest anytime after October. Would be a lot cooler and if you are visiting graveyards some would be easier to access. Any ideas from any one else? Do we have anyone in Bertie on there way to the courthouse that can help with this information? I am sure Pam would greatly appreciate the look up. Better yet do we have any Mizell researchers that can assist? Claudia In a message dated 08/19/09 13:33:01 Eastern Daylight Time, pdennis@eplus.net writes: How would one go about finding three children who were born and died between 1900 and 1910 in Bertie County since birth certificates were not recorded until 1913? Starkey Henderson Mizell and his wife, Sarah Adeline Mizelle (3 rd cousins), had 7 children, 4 of whom lived to adulthood. The three children who died were Cottie Rowena (for whom my aunt is named), Annie, and Jessie. Except for the fact that my aunt remembers hearing about these children when she was a child, we don’t know anything else about them nor where they may be buried. I have narrowed the timeframe because the 1910 census record for Bertie County shows that Sarah had 5 children, 2 of whom were living - *1910*; Census Place: *Windsor Ward 1, Bertie, North Carolina*; Roll *T624_1098*; Page: *32A*; Enumeration District: *9*; Image: *387*. Most of this 1910 record is spelled incorrectly but it is my family. It should say – Starkey Mizelle Sarah A. - wife Iva M. – son (b. July 1897) Charlie – daughter (b. 1909) The next child to survive (Bessie) was born in August 1911. The final child (Roy) was born in 1914. Cottie lived to be about 8 years old, I’m told. I have been unable to locate a 1900 census record for the family. Starkey died in 1916, so Sarah is alone with the children in the 1920 census. What are your suggestions? I no longer live in North Carolina so cannot get to the courthouse. I do have Ancestry.com but have not been able to locate them. Thanks. Well "PUT", Pete Austin -----Original Message----- From: ncbertie-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncbertie-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mmaker52 Sent: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 6:11 PM To: ncbertie-l@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCBERTIE] Digest Mode Option 1)If you would like to be subscribed in Digest Mode, you will get all the messages combined in ONE email every 12 hours. The top portion gives the "index" to what is there, and you can easily delete. Just drop me a line, and I'll make the change to Digest for you. This will make it much easier to "delete" those you're not interested in. Do consider this if you feel swamped with messages that don't interest you. 2)It IS very important that everyone "Change" the Subject line when replying so that it reflects a new subject. This was just illustrated when people quickly replied to a "recipe" email, which really was about family history. 3)We have a very, very large list of subscribers --- 267 to be exact --- so there are sure to be differences of opinion from time to time. Please be considerate of the broad scope of interest of people on the Bertie List. The idea is still on the table but so far we have only 7 people that are interested. Anyone else out there interested in taking a trip down memory lane or even making new memories in Bertie County? Of course us 7 could do it too. We are adults and have no need for things to turn ugly. Our opinions like our ancestry is varied and I believe we are all entitled. Our Bertie list is one of the best around and I feel we are just one big happy family. Like all families we all have different beliefs but thankfully we can voice these without nastiness. Thank you all for continuing to make us the best and all of the support you are giving to me and all past coordinators. During the time I belonged to that list, there were discussions about what they were going to watch on TV that night, jokes, political discussions, and their personal health problems. I posted a "respectful" statement to that list stating that I felt their discussions were inappropriate for a genealogy forum. I never heard a word in response to my post. This same subject came up on an Illinois list I subscribed to briefly while researching my father's side. One of the members of that list became very upset at some of the non-genealogical posts. Some of the other members became very defensive and very rude statements were made among the list members. I think it's great that our Bertie list can discuss our opinions without things turning ugly. Beth ----- Original Message ----- From: "K. No record to show if James Carter remained near Windsor NC or returned to Bertie Co later and married Miss Dollie Carter, the belle of Bertie County and the daughter of Lewis/Jesse Cotton. After they married the two lived on the adjoining plantation to that of her parents. The Carter plantation house still stand adjacent to SR #305 two mile south of Kelford and is still own by the Lewis Carter's three sons; Harold, Sidney Dale and Gene Ried Carter. According To Gene Reid all of the old James Carter Plantation has now been sold. Over the past years residentual lots were sold on the east side of SR #308. This probably was the same property that his grandfather Robert Carter origionally own before his home was destroyed by fire and later his son Isaac Sr relocated to the St John's section in Hertford County. Not known wheither James reloacated or if he remained in Bertie Country after his father moved away to St John's that is about twenty miles toward the northeast. The distance represents a hard days travel by carriage being drawn by two fine horses that average three miles for eight hours. Allowing for a hour stop for refreshments and short rest for the team and the ladies at a hotel in Aulander. James' son Wilie Carter and grandson Willie P Carter lived here in Bertie Co on the Plantation on both sides of SR #308 that goes from Kelford to Lewisto/Woodville. After Willey P Carter's death, his widow Roberta Harrell Carter moved to South Main Street in Kelford with her chidren: Lewis, Ralph, Polly and Louise. Their Carter Family Tree and History is given in the an later chapter in an artical that I am now preparing on Southwest Bertie County. He married Dollie Cotton #21468, married bef 1814, b. c1780, (daughter of Jesse Cotton #523 and Lavenia Young #219). (a) Eliza Jane Carter #26622, b. 08-02-1814, d. 11-15-1824, buried Jess Cotton Cemetery. (b) James Carter Jr #26623, b. c1822. 28 years old in 1850 census. (c) Wiley Carter #20690, b. c 1827, d. 04-11-1898 in Kelford NC. Windsor Ledger, Thursday APRIL 14, 1898. Mr Wiley Carter of Kelkford was having some fence repaired last Tueday evening when he was taken with appoplexy and never spoke again after he fell. Mr M L Wood reached is side soon after and administered some spirts but soon found that breath was extinct. April 14,1998 His son Wiley P Carter married Roberta Harrell who was a descendant of the John Harrell Sr clan that came to Bertie with his ten Harrell sons from Nansemond Co VA. Wiley P is the only known descendant. Roberta Harrell was probably a next door neighbor. A 1863 map show of the area denotes a Harrell family living on the adjoining plantation There were six children from that union. He married Henrietta (Carter) #20689. [1] Wiley P Carter #18448, b. 02-18-1877 in Carter Farm-SW Kelford area, d. aft 1910 in Kelford Bertie Co NC. Owned property adjacent to the Cotton Plantation. After Wiley P died his son Lewis later owned and managed the property and share cropped the farmland. According to an email from his grandson Gene Reid Carter they still own the house and hope to restore it in the future. WILIE CARTER PLACE--Next on SR 308 as you drive northwest towards Kelford was the plantation of Willie Carter that was located on both the left and Right side of the former unpaved highway. This is where James Carter and his wife Dollie Cotton built their home. Dollie is thought to have been the daughter of a neighbor Lewis Cotton per information about the Carter family that was sent to me by Gene Reed Carter. The house was probably constructed in the late 1700's. James Carter was the son of Captain Isaac Carter Sr who fought beside his father, Robert Carter, in the Revolutionary War. The Carter property extended east across the SAL Railroad and then north where it joined the Harrell farm on the west property line (Raleigh Doughtie lived there some years later) and that of George A. Parker to the south. James Carter and Henrietta were the parents of Wiley P Carter and his wife Roberta daughter of John B Harrell Sr and wife of Sarah Jane Livermon. The Livermon family owned the property that was across the SR #308 highway from the current West Bertie Elementry School. They had children Wiley Lewis Carter that married Pauline Harrell (See Harrell data), Ralph that married Louise Lane (see Lane info later) from Roxobel, and Fannie Louise that married 1st Colon Harrell and after his death she married 2nd Rueben Benthal from Rich Square. Ruben married 1st Fruzie Harrell the sister of Pauline Harrell wife of Wiley Lewis Carted. They were the daughter of Council and Lou Hedgespeth Harrell. Another daughter Margaret "Polly" Carter who married Maylon Parker and later lived in Portsmouth VA. No record on daughter Helen E Carter. After Wiley P. Carter died his widow and their family moved to Main Street in Kelford into the house across the street from my parents at the intersection with Norfleet Ave. Later Wiley P's grandson Gene Reid Carter used one of the buildings on the farm to assemble and produce parts for Harrington Mfg Co in Lewiston, NC. The Carter family still owns the Home place but they sold their house in Kelford in the 1990's. The farmland was split when they relocated SR 308.in the 30' that divided the property. The Carter larger home place was on the left side of #308 off to the right there was a small house up in the field about a quarter of a mile from the State Road. After they relocated the roadbed the Carter house was positioned with the rear of the house facing the old original roadbed. When they improved the road and eliminated the arching curve that went slightly to the north and passed behind the Carter home place it left it with a now small backyard between the house and the road. The former old roadbed had arched a few hundred feet to the northeast from the Cotton Place until it joined SR 308 at the Gravel Pit Road. Today several houses have been built on the right next too and in the area on SR 308 from the Cotton Place to the old Carter Home place building. . He married Roberta Harrell #18449, married 1898, b. 1874 in Roxobel ?, (daughter of John B Harrell Sr #15431 and Lousia Judith Peele #15424). Roberta: Information sent to me by Sarah Frances Harrell listed her husband name as M P Carter instead of W P Carter as found in county records? After her husband Wiley died Roberta moved to South Main Street in Kelford. Living with her in 1930 were son Ralph and wife Ethel Lane Carter, daughters Helen E age 22 and Margaret C age 20. Lodgers rooming with the Carter family in 1930 were Owen Parker and his wife Edith Gay Parker. Owen later bought the Clarence Roberson Home next to the SAL Railroad on Norfleet Ave where they lived until their death. Around 1938 son Ralph, wife Ethel and son Edward were living with their mother on Main Street in Kelford. They also lived in the house next door to my parents on Norfleet Street. They later moved to Roxobel. At one time in the 1930s son Lewis, wife Pauline and sons Harold, Sidney Dale and Jene Reid Carter also lived Mrs. Roberta Carter. They moved in with her after their house on Norfleet Street was distroyed by fire in the early 1930s. [A] Wiley Lewis Carter #18446, b. 1899 in Kelford Area, Bertie Co NC. Colin was the owner of a Hotel in Kelford that was located on Broad Street that was built behind the J C Cherry Store. The Hotel was first owned by Burgess Stephenson until he sold it to either Jack Bowers or Colin. Warren Harrell his son stated that Colin owned the hotel when it burned. She married (1) Atlas Colin Harrell Sr #19111, b. 07-09-1894 in Bertie Co NC, (son of William Council Harrell #19591 and Ella Louise "Lou" Hedgespeth #19590) d. 10-20-1930 in Roxobel NC. Atlas: Colin owned and operated the Kelford Hotel that was located on what today is Broad Street behind the J C Cherry Store. The Hotel first owner was Burgess Stephenson who sold out to Jack Bowers and Colin Harrell. Colin was the manager and owner when it was destroyed by fire. During the days the hotel was still in operation it was said to be a place where a traveler could quince his thirst after arriving by train and experienced a trip that exposed them to the heavy black coal smoke and sot made from the steam locamotive. In the 1920 census Atlas C Harrell b 1895 and wife Fannie (Louise Carter) b 1900 are listed with son A.C. Jr at 6 months with boarders James U Norfleet b1890, Ruth Norfleet b1895, Nannie U Norfleet b 6-12-1917, James U Norfleet Jr b1-12-1919 and A.C. Johnston b 1883. This would be Alwyn Chesley Johnston that managed the Coca Cola Bottling plant and married Amma Browne daughter of George Thomas Browne and wife Daisy. Alwyn Chesley Johnston was from around Centerville in Franklin Co NC. Once in the late 30's when A.C. was riding in the car with my grandmother, Mrs Kate Dozier Lyon, they traced and decided that they were fourth cousins. As I did not write down their conversation I have no record of this relationship. Colin owned and operated the "M" System Store in Kelford where the current Fire and Rescue Department are housed. It was a rather unique store in the arrangement that had a checkout area where the customers had to pass through a turn style to pay their bill. The store was forced to close during the depression days. At that time Colin and Louise were living on Norfleet Ave across from Stephen Norfleet and his wife Annie Cobb. Some of the packaged food such as pitted and stuffed dates was stored in the garage behind their house. We as kids would sample the then stored merchandise. First time I ever had a date stuffed with nuts. Enjoy then even today. Colin conducted a logging operation and used the No 72 Harrell Siding location to load and ship his logs to saw mills throughout the area. She married (2) Reuben Alvin Benthal Sr #20263, b. 1892 in Rich Square NC ?, (son of John Augusta Benthal #21279 and Unknown wife John Benthal #21280) d. July 12, 1969. Reuben: Married 1st Fruzie Harrell daughter Council and Louise "Lou" Hedgespeth. They lived on West Church Street until their devoice. There were no issue from this union. In the 1920 census Reuben and his wife Ivey F (Fruzie) had as a boarder Norman Parker b 1897. Reuben married second Louise Carter daughter of Wiley Carter and wife Roberta Harrell and had three children: Reuben, John and Louise Marie Benthal. . 1. Atlas Colin "A C" Harrell Jr #19604, (son of Atlas Colin Harrell Sr #19111 and Fannie Louise Carter #18485) b. c1920. 2. Lewis Warren Harrell #19605, (son of Atlas Colin Harrell Sr #19111 and Fannie Louise Carter #18485) b. May 28 1923 in Kelford Bertie Co NC, d. 11-09-2008. Lived at P.O.Box 35, 3703 Buckeye Road, Sugar Grove NC 28679. Tel # 828 297-5996. Visited with Warren May 23, 2002. He had an auto accident in April and was staying with a friend Jerry Green that lived a couple of miles from his home. I had a telephone call from warren asking for data on his Harrell family. I delivered the data I had on his Harrell Family of 1,000 in person while he was recouping at the Green's who were very attentive to his needs. At that time he was a very handsome man. He had poor eye sight and difficult in hearing. He lived alone in a small cottage at Buckeye Road. He stated he slept all day and stayed awake at night listing to the TV and radio. He came by with Jerry Green who brought him to visit us at our place between Blowing Rock and Boone in Mountain Ridge Plantation. We had prepared him a pot of homemade Brunswick stew that he had requested. He had asked me to made him some stew as no one in the mountains knew how to fix it and that was something he really wanted one more time. Whenever I spoke with him on the telephone it was very difficult due too his hearing problem and I had to call after eleven o'clock PM to catch him while he was awake. Never could get him to answer if he was asleep and could not call me because he could not read my phone number due to poor eye sight. Warren served in the US Army Air Corps during WW II and was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. He worked as a ticket writer at Bethel's Stock market on sale days. Help manage the Stockyard that was owned and operated by his step father Ruben Benthal. The Louis Harrell family moved from Kelford to Rich Square after his mother remarried after the death of his father Colin Harrell. In Kelford they lived in the fourth house from our house which was across the street from the Norfleet home on Norfleet Street (Ave). After the failure of Colin's M System Store they stored some of the unsold merchandise in an outer building in their back yard. We kids use to get treats from the left over merchandise. Items I recall were dried stuffed dates and candy cherries. Warren attended Roxobel-Kelford School but graduated from Rich Square. In 2007 he purchased the Ruben Benthal House in Rich Square but he never lived there after he bought it but remained at Buckeye Road. He lived ther alone for many years and bought his meals at a nearby county store until it closed around 2005. His close friend Jerry Green would do his grocery shopping and bring it to his house as he could no longer see to drive although he had four abandon cars and trucks in his front yard. Warren was a class mate with my brother Irving "Bro" Austin. He seldom participated or took part in very many play ground activity but would only stand on the side line and watch. A very smart student but usually was a loner when it came to any social activities or taking part in any sporting events. However he loved to fish and read books. Liked by his school mates but was known as being "his own" kind of a man who sometimes marched to the beat of his own drummer which many of us sometime like too do ourselves. He stated on our visits that he and Ruben had gone fishing on the day before Rubin Died. Rubin and my father Hobart Austin were great friends and enjoyed Dynamite Fishing Pond where he carried many younger youths to fish where they had many a cookout fish fry. Warren was buried with his grandfather Council Harrell and other former Parker-Harrell relatives at the 72 Harrell Siding Cemetery. . At the age of twenty years, in 1755, the youngest son of Joseph and Catharine removed himself to Bertie County NC. He died at age 49. The researcher, Carolyn Agnes Foster Marbourg, of the Carter History stated that the Carter family lived near Windsor where their house was destroyed by fire and all family record lost. There is no mention of when his descendants relocated in the Cotton House Area of Bertie where the Wiley Carter Plantation is located today. Robert Carter served in the Revolutionary War in Captain Clements Hall's Company, Second NC Battalion under Colonel Patten. Enrolled May 4, 1776 and discharged November 10, 1778. His son Isaac Carter served in the same Battalion. Robert's will written 30th day August 1783 and probated in Windsor on 11-1784.He names his six children Michael, Rachel, George, Olive, Robert and Isaac to whom he leaves the land and plantation whereon he lived. He fails to identify his wife that remains unknown. I have in my records a transcript of his will. a. Robert Carter Jr #21475. b. Rachel Carter #21476. c. George Carter #21477. d. There were five intermarriages between the decentants Captain Thomas Carter and Captain William Ball Sr. He married Frances Ball #21485, (daughter of Joseph Ball #21486 and Elizabeth (Ball) #21487). My Carter ancestor left Bertie Co. about 1808. His name was Turner Carter, b. ca 1780 Wife Elitha Jenkins m. Oct 1804 married Bertie Co. Children: William, Cullen, Margarate, Lewis Jenkins, Sarah Eliza, and Delilah Delilah and Margarate were born in NC 1806-07. The next child Cullen was born in Caldwell Co., KY in 1809. I have had difficulty in doing research as there was another Turner Carter b. early 1800s whose Mother was Margaret Carter. Margaret was the 2nd wife of Cullen Carter. The name similarities tend to make me think that there is a relationship there, but I have been unable to prove that. Turner Carter is mentioned in Margaret's will, but it is the younger Turner who remained in Bertie. Is anyone at all familiar with this line..or can you direct me? I have worked previously with someone who is familiar with the Cullen/Margaret line. We have not been able to identify the 1st wife. We have discussed the possibility that my Turner is from the 1st marriage but again we haven't found any proof. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Hi Claudia, Smeone mentioned a short while ago the idea of having some kind of reunion and if anyone wanted to help out. Whatever happened to that idea? Did it fizzle out or is someone going to plan ne? I posted a "respectful" statement to that list stating that I felt their discussions were inappropriate for a genealogy forum. I never heard a word in response to my post. This same subject came up on an Illinois list I subscribed to briefly while researching my father's side. One of the members of that list became very upset at some of the non-genealogical posts. Some of the other members became very defensive and very rude statements were made among the list members. I think it's great that our Bertie list can discuss our opinions without things turning ugly. Beth ----- Original Message ----- From: "K. Linda & Carol, Good to hear from you!? When Carol listed a Nathaniel Nicols in her line immdiately bells went off in my head, as I recall that you as well as Barbara were kind of stuck on proving out the connection to ?Nathaniel and Willis Nichols. So I thought perhaps Carol might have some new information on this for us. So do you think that Carol's Nathaniel Nichols is the same is the Nathaniel and Willis Nichols we are looking for? Also, I thought there were two Nathaniel Nichols. The first son of John and Mary Nichols from VA which also had the brother Willis. Then I thought that this Nathaniel had a son in 1759ish also named Nathaniel? If you an clarify this would be of great help. I've been researching this line for several years. This Nathaniel Nichols came from Hertford Co., and was b. abt 1749, was d. by 21 Oct 1834. Some researchers have guess his birth at around 1775, but in 1805, he was exempted from taxes due to old age (Christian Co. Order Book 1805-1809). His first wife is unknown, but he had four proven children b. bef. 1791 by her, and a fifth that is presumed his but not proven. His second wife was Susannah Ward, widow of James Newsom (also from Hertford Co.). They had four children together. After Susannah died, Nathaniel married Mary Edrington in 1830, but she sued him for divorce in 1831. No children from this union. Peter, we talked a few years ago. Nathaniel Nichols of Bertie Co. had a brother, Willis. I believe that Nathaniel Nichols from Hertford Co. is a son of Willis Nichols, but still searching for evidence to prove it. In Caldwell Co., KY, both Nathaniel Nichols from Hertford Co. b. ca 1749, and Nathaniel, son of Josiah Nichols from Bertie Co., b. ca 1775, lived in the Lewiston area, so I do think they were related but haven't been able to prove it yet. >From what we know is that there was a John Nichols and wife Mary from Jamestown and they had two sons, Nathaniel and Willis. Nathaniel might have been born about 1720 and Willis the younger brother.? They both eventually came down into NC. Nathaniel Nichols later had a son born in the 1750s also named Nathaniel.I also heard they mave have then moved out of NC. My Nichols relatives who are searching are not able, but think Willis is in our line, but cuurently can not conect him and we are stuck here. Barbara Nichols Mulder is aware of this and may have more details on this. I hope this helps and I hope you can find something out to help us. Pete, In answer to your question : Edwin Conway, Sr. and Martha Eltonhead are my 9th great grandpaarents. I descend from their daughter Eltonhead Conway that married Henry Thacker, Sr. Edwin Conway, Sr. was third clerk for Northampton Co., Va. and had land in Northampton, Lancaster and Middlesex counties in Va. His son Edwin married Elizabeth Thornton.. and his grandson son was Col. Edwin Conway that married Ann Ball. As a background Martha Eltonhead had 4 sisters that came from England to Va. Here are 3 of them. (1) Agatha Eltonhead married 3rd to Sir Henry Chicheley. He is a first cousin to Diana Skipwith. (2) Eleanor Eltonhead married 3rd to Col. John Carter for whom Diana Skipwith witnessed two deeds in 1665 using her maiden name. (3) Alice Eltonhead married 2nd to Henry Corbin. Col. John Carter left a gift to my grandmother Eltonhead Conway that married Henry Thacker, Sr. My lines of cousins go to Pres. James Madison. the Lee's of Va. and the Washington's. Pete, I have been told this part but haven't checked it out yet...... Both my Edwin Conway, Sr. and Col. John Carter were Godparents to two of Capt. Thomas Carter and Katherine Dale's children. Also, Letiticia Corbyn (Corbin) ... later became the wife of Richard Lee. ... stood as Godmother to Edward Carter eldest son with Diana Skipwith Dale, Edward Dale and my Edwin Conway, Sr. I understand Diana Skipwith married Col. Edward Dale and had a brother Grey Skipwith and their father was Sir Henry Skipwith from England. _------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ >From Pete: Is there anyone on this list that is familiar with the Carter genealogy in Bertie County during the 1700s? Captain Thomas Carter Sr #21481, b. c1630, d. 10-22-1700. He married Katharine Dale #21482, married 05-04-1670, (daughter of Major Edward Dale #21483 and Diana Skipworth #21491). Katharine: She was married by Rev John Sheppard Data in this report from Winborne Colonial History, Sally's Family Place, Barry Hayes, records furnished by Wiley Warren Harrell son of Louise Carter, plus personal research data by Pete Austin #1 with family connection with Peele and Knight Clan: dated through 01-30-2009. Captain Thomas Carter came to Virginia prior to 1652 from England. He was a Captain of Virginia Militia, Justice, Member of Council, Deputy Clerk of his County and a member House of Burgess in 1667. Thomas was twenty-one years of age when he came to Virginia. He had the distinguished title of Country Gentleman. His coat of arms proves that this family was from England and that he came from the Bedfordshire Carters Clan. Captain Thomas Carter was married twice, bringing his first wife with him from England. Her name was not known. By this marriage he had three children, who all died young. From his 2nd marriage to Katharine Dale they had ten sons and three daughters. She was the oldest daughter of Major Edward Dale. In 1655 - 1674 he was Clerk of Lancaster Co. From 1670-'71-79'-80 was High Sheriff and 1677-82-83 a member of the House of Burgesses. Major Dale took part in Beacon's Rebellion. On Dec 8 1674 Edward Dale conveyed 500 acres to his daughter plus slaves, cattle hogs, horse and a colt. Major Edward Dale was of the ancient family of Dale's of Northampton and London, which originally was the County of Chester. He was the father of Katharine Dale Carter that married Thomas Carter. Elizabeth's sister married Sir Grey Skipworth of England. Sir Grey was the 2nd son of Sir Henry Skipworth. The Skipworth family sought refuge in Colonial Virginia after King Charles the First was beheaded. They were Royalist and supported the Crown during the revolutions by Parliament. He and his family had to flee to save their lives. Sir Henry Skipworth at that time was the 1st Baronet of Presmould, Leicestershire, England. The Skipworth ancestry chart goes back to Henry the Conqueror. The Skipworth family tree can be found in Burke's "Extinct and Dormant Baronetcies" of England. Capt Thomas Carter and Katharine Dale Carter's 3rd son John Carter married Frances Ball the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Ball. Joseph and Elizabeth Ball were also the parents of Mary Ball that married General George Washington the 1st President of the United States of America. John Carter was brother-in-law To General Washington.

I would be interested also. Sallie H Parker was born in 4/1/1912 to Wiley Hudson Parker and Juddie Harrell Parker. A picture of her grave stone in the Harrell and Connor cemetery shows her date of birth as above and her death on 5/2/1930. If someone is going to the courthouse and could find any further evidence on her birth and death, I would appreciate it. I'm interested in the cause of her death; family rumor is that is was rheumatic fever. Thank you, Charles Parker ----- grandson of George T Parker, Sr., who was the brother of Wiley Hudson Parker (know in the family as Uncle Peter, for some reason) -----Original Message----- From: ncbertie-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ncbertie-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mmaker52 Sent: Wednesday, August 19, 2009 10:36 AM To: ncbertie@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NCBERTIE] Help needed in locating children born in Bertie County before 1913 Do we have anyone in Bertie on there way to the courthouse that can help with this information? Claudia In a message dated 08/19/09 13:33:01 Eastern Daylight Time, pdennis@eplus.net writes: How would one go about finding three children who were born and died between 1900 and 1910 in Bertie County since birth certificates were not recorded until 1913? Starkey Henderson Mizell and his wife, Sarah Adeline Mizelle (3 rd cousins), had 7 children, 4 of whom lived to adulthood. The three children who died were Cottie Rowena (for whom my aunt is named), Annie, and Jessie. Except for the fact that my aunt remembers hearing about these children when she was a child, we don't know anything else about them nor where they may be buried. It should say - Starkey Mizelle Sarah A. - wife Iva M. - son (b. July 1897) Charlie - daughter (b. 1909) The next child to survive (Bessie) was born in August 1911. The final child (Roy) was born in 1914. Cottie lived to be about 8 years old, I'm told. Thanks. Hi Bertie County-I was born in Bertie County and I have subscribed to your list for a long time now, but have never sent in any names. The discussions on the list are extremely interesting and informational. I have begun to work on my genealogy and will submit a request. Does anyone have any information on the Jernigans?? George and Lodema were my grandparents. They had 14 children and lived on a farm there. Greetings, Please tell me how to receive the daily digest instead of individual postings. I had 23 Bertie messages this morning and because my business correspondence often includes people I don't know, I have to open and then delete each one that I don't need. I am on the digest for other forums, and it is a good solution. I didn't know that feature was available here. Best wishes to everyone, and I'm sure this is all settling down now. Regards, Jackie Powell
Could we do one thing--if it is a recipe then say receipe when you send it--if it is info on ancesters. etc. then say that and then us who are not interested in recipes can just delete the ones we do not want to read. When I went on my computer this morning I had 34 e-mails, all from Bertie County and the majority mentioning the receipes. I came from Tennessee myself and believe me we had the same receipes made by grandmothers. Mary in Florida In a message dated 8/19/2009 7:53:31 A.M. Claudia Harrell Williams CC Bertie County In a message dated 08/19/09 06:00:12 Eastern Daylight Time, bethdix@comcast.net writes: I don't belong to very many mailing lists, but, while working on my husband's family, I joined the Floyd Co., VA, list.
