I was born, raised, and still live in Bertie County. Bertie did and still does grow tobacco, peanuts, soybeans, and cotton as well as corn. Cotton was not grown for many years because of the bow weevil (a bug) but has made a big come back in the last few years. There is a cook book called Carolina Tobacco Country Cookbook that is not only a cook book but the history of tobacco country and that is what Bertie was at one time...Tobacco country! I KNOW, I was there. This book talks about a time between the Great Civil War and WWII but let me tell you , it describes Bertie the way it was until the late 1950's. I got mine at the museum in Bath, most museums in NC sell it for about $8 to $10. Amazon.com has it for sale from $11.88 to as high as $73. I have in my notes that Elisha Rhodes married Reamy Carter on 18 Dec 1809. Is this actually the bond date, Carol? Then I have Elisha Rhodes married to Happy Stallings, 7 Jan 1813, Christian Co., KY, but don't know if these are the same person or not. I have a notation that this may be Elisha Averitt Rhodes. Also the following abstract of a will in my notes: William C. Carter, May 26, 1826, Wife Temperance, Elisha A. Rhodes, Exr. Test, Isaac J. Kittrell, Hanry Castellow. Perhaps there was Elisha Rhodes and Elisha A. Rhodes? KY421@aol.com wrote: > Hey Pete, > > Which Rhodes? There was an Elisha Rhodes who was engaged to Reamy Carter > in Caldwell Co., around 1813-15. Brian, There was a Wright Nichols who moved to Hinds Co., MO, and died in 1833. He was b. in 1771 and married Sallie Burch in 1791 in Caswell Co. He was a brother of the Willis Nichols who I have as dying in Madison Co., TN, bef 1850. This is from another researcher, but I don't have her source for this. If you have proof that he died in Hinds Co., please let me know and I will change my records. I've seen court records mentioning these Nichols men in both Caswell and Person counties, so they must have lived near the county line, or had property in both counties. Willis Nichols who lived in Person Co. had the following sons: Micajah Wright, b. 1 June 1771 Willis, Jr., b. ca 1785 Mathias, d. bef Nov 1812 Linda Brian Nichols wrote: > I know of a Willis Nichols that went from Bertie County to Caswell County > and then to Hinds County Mississippi where he died in 1833. > >
Hi Peter and Carol, I haven't heard of the John and Mary Nichols from Jamestown with sons Willis and Nathaniel. I'd love to know the source for this family, if anyone has more info. The parents I show for Willis and Nathaniel Nichols (the Nathaniel b. ca1720 - d. 1755 in Bertie Co.) are Richard Nichols and wife Martha. Richard left a will dated 20 Jan 1721 (signed Richard Nickles), which was proved 3 May 1721 in Princess Anne Co., VA. I have a microfilmed copy. In this will he states "I dew give & bequeave my lands to my sons Willis Nicholas & Nathaniel Nicholis to be ekilly divided in quantity between them when the oldest of these my two sons comes to ye: age of twenty one years but my youngest son Nathl: to have his first coys (believe he meant choice)." This will was witnessed by Anthony Webb and Thomas Wiles/Miles. On 2 Jan 1722, Martha Nichols gave her two sons several household items in a deed of gift, to be given to them when they each reach the age of 21, or at her decease. Again, this deed was witnessed by Anthony Webb and Nathaniel Nickles. I assume this is a different Nathaniel than her son, but if it was her son Nathaniel, then he would have been b. by 1708. Children 14 and older could witness documents (according to the genealogy guidebook, The Source, by L. D. Szucs and S. H. Luebking). In both documents, Richard and Mary mentioned that Nathaniel was the younger child. According to researcher Danny Knight, Martha and her sons moved from VA to what was then Chowan Co. ca 1735. I tried years ago to contact him without success, so do not know what source he used for that 1735 date. However, on 18 Dec 1738, Anthony Williams (through his attorney John Wynns) sold 570 acres "to Willis Nichols of Princess Anne Co., Virginia, on the n. side of Ahosky Swamp" (Bertie Co. Deed Bk F). John Jones had been the original owner of this land. This is the earliest court document I can find mentioning Willis Nichols. Willis Nichols is listed in the Hertford Co. militia in 1767 and 1769. I believe this is a son of the elder Willis, since I have Nathaniel's brother Willis as b. bef 1716, and he'd be in his 50's by 1767. I believe it is this younger Willis who was granted the bounty land in Person Co. in 1784, and moved there with his family. He d. in Person Co. in 1813, another reason I suspect he was a son of the Willis who was the brother of Nathaniel of Bertie Co. Willis who moved to Person Co., NC, had a son named Willis, b. 1785, d. bef 1850 in Madison Co., TN. I've been trying to connect these Nichols men to the Nathaniel Nichols who d. in Caldwell Co. in 1834 and my Wright Nichols of Hertford Co., who d. in 1846. I suspect the records to prove their connection went up in flames in the Hertford Co. courthouse fires! Linda [1]cville36@aol.com wrote: Linda & Carol, Good to hear from you!? When Carol listed a Nathaniel Nicols in her line immdia tely bells went off in my head, as I recall that you as well as Barbara were ki nd of stuck on proving out the connection to ?Nathaniel and Willis Nichols. So I thought perhaps Carol might have some new information on this for us. So do you think that Carol's Nathaniel Nichols is the same is the Nathaniel and Willis Nichols we are looking for? Also, I thought there were two Nathaniel Nichols. The first son of John and Mar y Nichols from VA which also had the brother Willis. Then I thought that this N athaniel had a son in 1759ish also named Nathaniel? If you an clarify this would be of great help. I've been researching this line for several years. This Nathaniel Nichols came from Hertford Co., and was b. abt 1749, was d. by 21 Oct 1834. Some researchers have guess his birth at around 1775, but in 1805, he was exempted from taxes due to old age (Christian Co. Order Book 1805-1809). His first wife is unknown, but he had four proven children b. bef. 1791 by her, and a fifth that is presumed his but not proven. His second wife was Susannah Ward, widow of James Newsom (also from Hertford Co.). They had four children together. After Susannah died, Nathaniel married Mary Edrington in 1830, but she sued him for divorce in 1831. No children from this union. Peter, we talked a few years ago. Nathaniel Nichols of Bertie Co. had a brother, Willis. I believe that Nathaniel Nichols from Hertford Co. is a son of Willis Nichols, but still searching for evidence to prove it. In Caldwell Co., KY, both Nathaniel Nichols from Hertford Co. b. ca 1749, and Nathaniel, son of Josiah Nichols from Bertie Co., b. ca 1775, lived in the Lewiston area, so I do think they were related but haven't been able to prove it yet. Hey Pete, Which Rhodes? There was an Elisha Rhodes who was engaged to Reamy Carter in Caldwell Co., around 1813-15. They were never married and Elisha married someone else. I presume Reamy died because I never saw her turn up anywhere else. She was of an age to have possibly been my Turner Carter's sister. Carol In a message dated 8/19/2009 2:22:01 P.M. The Bonnie Buchanan info is actually some of my Mom's information that she put out there. Her name is really Bonnie Woodall Carter...somehow ancestry got her info confused with someone else. Those comments are one's that I'd put in "Carol's kin" out on ancestry a number of years ago and a number of others have "borrowed" it VI. Lewis Carter #22066, (son of Capt. Isaac Carter #21474 and Ruth Outlaw? #21508) b. 06-17-1819. This was Lewis Jenkins Carter son of Turner and Elitha Jenkins Carter my Great Great Grandfather. Elitha is thought be be a daughter of Nathan Jenkins and Elizabeth Early but we have been unable to prove it. It is interesting to me that Reddick Nichols married Celia Jenkins and Moses Stallins married her sister Nancy Jenkins. I have reason to believe that Reddick Nichols, Moses Stallins and Nathan Jenkins all moved to KY about the same time, if not together. Nathan Jenkins settled in Hopkins Co. not too far from the others over the county line in Caldwell Co. There was another Lewis Carter who married If I recall correctly Leasey Tailington (sic) in Bertie County in the 1790s or early 1800s. In a message dated 8/19/2009 1:01:35 P.M. I'll have to go back and look at some of my notes, but I do remember getting frustrated researching my Nichols line in Caldwell Co., because I had mistakenly gotten some of the "other" Nichols family intertwined...birth years were close and many names were similar. When Carol listed a Nathaniel Nicols in her line immdiately bells went off in my head, as I recall that you as well as Barbara were kind of stuck on proving out the connection to ?Nathaniel and Willis Nichols. So I thought perhaps Carol might have some new information on this for us. So do you think that Carol's Nathaniel Nichols is the same is the Nathaniel and Willis Nichols we are looking for? Also, I thought there were two Nathaniel Nichols. The first son of John and Mary Nichols from VA which also had the brother Willis. Then I thought that this Nathaniel had a son in 1759ish also named Nathaniel? Today, however, we have received at least five separate digests, despite the fact that there are not enough new posts to account for more than one. The problem seems to be that digest subscribers, instead of following the instruction to send posts as new emails to ncbertie@rootweb.com, are using Reply. Every time they do that, the entire contents of the previous digest are included in their post. Since the sending of a new digest is triggered by the number of lines that have accumulated since the last digest, this use of Reply creates multiple digests daily with the same messages repeated over and over and over. The solution is simple. If you subscribe to the digest mode, please DO NOT USE REPLY when you post, as it just clutters up everyone's mailboxes.
