    1. RE: [NCBERTIE] Indian Woods Reservation
    2. Neil Baker
    3. Yes; after the Tuscaroran War that was ignited on 9/22/1711! In 1717 those that remained here were given this reservation in what is now known as Indian Woods in Bertie County. The whites had taken much of their land, enslaved many of them and continually degraded them. This was the spark that set off the Native Americans attacks of the white people in 1711. The area around the Neuse, Trent, Tar and Pamlico Rivers received the blount of this war. Though Bertie was involved also. After this large reservation in the southern part of Bertie County was given to them in 1717, the whites kept taking their land and so on. Therefore most of these Tuscaroran moved to Lewiston NY after this. Those that remained here in Bertie mixed in with both African American and White societies. There is little documentation to be found when researching Native Americans in Bertie County. You can search our Bertie County site and find much info about this, also using google.com....type in Tuscaroran, or Tuscaroras.com. I'm no "Native American" expert, only sharing! -----Original Message----- From: Tracy Lott [mailto:tmlott@earthlink.net] Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2002 7:05 PM To: NCBERTIE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NCBERTIE] Indian Woods Reservation Hello, Was there an Indian Reservation in Bertie County called Indian Woods Reservation? 3. s stands for Single thanks for the question, because I need to get the code on the other pages as well as the very first one.. Key to the following census list: 1. Names in household 2. Relationship to the head of household 3. Race 4. Sex 5. Month and year of birth 6. M = Married, S = Single, Wid = Widowed 7. How many years married 8. Occupation 9. Women may have an addition set of numbers to show the number of children they have given birth to, and how many of those children are still living at the time of the census. Example: 8/3 [meaning that woman had 8 children and that 3 of them are still living.] 10. Each household can be identified by a designated "head" family member, and the households are separated by a double space. 11. When a person listed or one of their parents were born somewhere other than North Carolina I will try to make it clear just who and where. 12. When possible please check out the actual photo copied census to verify accuracy and for additional information.
