    1. RE: [NCBERTIE] On-line genealogy calculator
    2. Billy W. Scott
    3. For those who might need to use a genealogy type calculator without logging on to the Internet, the author of the calculator at http://www.pulpgen.com/gen/calc/ permits the calculator to be saved for personal use. Read his terms of use on the help screen for full details. You also need to save the help file to comply with his request. I just saved both files to a 3.5" floppy disk so that I can use the calculator even on another computer. Seems to work fine for me running right off the floppy. Try it yourself and see if it works. 1. [NCBERTIE] How to determine birthday
    2. HOW TO FIGURE A BIRTHDATE REMEMBER THIS NUMBER 8870 This is not an error: It is the number to remember when you want to find the birthdate of someone when you only have the date of death and age. How do you figure the birthdate? Suppose the person died May 6, 1889, at the age of 71 years, 7 months, 9 days. 1. Write the year, month, day as:->18890506 2. Subtract the age at death:------->710709 3. This gives the figure:--------->18179797 4. Now subtract 8870:----------------->8870 5. The result is:----------------->18170927 Year 1817, 9th month (Sept), 27th day or 27 Sept, 1817                                                                                      Brenda Sessoms

    1. [NCBERTIE] POORHOUSE Information for NC
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com Please excuse the cross postings, but we just published poorhouse information about a great many counties in NORTH CAROLINA. Our partial list of counties known to have poorhouses includes: Beaufort/Buncombe/Burke/Cabarrus/Caswell/Cleveland/Craven/Cumberland/Davidso n/Duplin/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Halifax/Iredell/Johnston/Lenoir/Lincol n/Mecklenburg/Montgomery/Moore/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Richmond/R ockingham/Rowan/ Rutherford/Stokes/Surry/Warren/Wayne Our list of counties for which the NC State Archives has poor relief and/or poorhouse records includes: Alexander/Ashe/Bertie/Beaufort/Buncombe/Carteret/Chatham/Cherokee/Cleveland/ Craven/Currituck/Davie/Edgecombe/Granville/Guilford/Hyde/Iredell/Lincoln/Mon tgomery/Nash/NewHanover/Northampton/Orange/Pasquotank/Perquimans/Person/Polk /Rowan/Rutherford/ Sampson/Stanley/Surry/Union/Wake/Wayne/Yadkin We have provided more historical notes from the archives on the page with their holdings listed. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on NORTH CAROLINA on the table of states. If you will scroll down to the section on "Local Notes", you will find the poorhouse list; and then scrolling down to "Records", you will see the archives holdings list. These entries are marked with yellow NEW arrows. (NOTE: If you have visited the site recently, you may have to click on REFRESH on your browser to see the new information.) There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    1. [NCBERTIE] Determine Age or Dates of Birth.
    2. Jim Jenkins
    3. Virginia, It seems there is a formular to determine the year of a persons birth by the census reports. For Example" I have a greatgrandmother Ella Nora Green Bn. 8-4-1883 and Dd. 2-9-1969. Her husband James Walter Terry Dd. 8-21-1941. According the 1920 Census-Mitchell Township, Aulander Town: shows Terry, J.W. head/M/W/40/M. How would I establish his Date of Birth? Thanks, Jim

    1. Re: [NCBERTIE] Determine Age or Dates of Birth.
    2. Crilley
    3. I've seen those charts....but don't have a url handy. maybe someone else does.... These charts actually let you use the month/day and then come up with the birthdate. However, what I do is just subtract the age from the date of the Census....which gives an estimated date by the year. (I don't think this is your question though) Comparing the various years of census can show you the variations....and many times even the age they gave the enumerator was incorrect....depending on who actually gave the information and how accurate they wanted to be. Probably by 1920 they were giving more accurate information.
