I have in my records two (2) Lamb Hardy's. One was b. 1705 d. 1761 he married Elizabeth Parrott. They had a son by the name of William Hardy whom married Edith Batchelor. A William Hardy (I don't know if its the same?) had a son by Sarah Sowell by the name Lamb Hardy b. 1/20/1754. These are people from the Salmon Creek area. These are old families from Bertie. These Hardy lines have always been fascinating to me because General Douglas Macarthur mother Mary Pinckney Hardy's family came from Bertie County. I'm still researching this line, and have very little info. -----Original Message----- From: Cathy Farris [mailto:cfarris@pacific.net] Sent: Tuesday, February 05, 2002 9:10 PM To: NCBERTIE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCBERTIE] George Ryan Grist Mill date Subject: Re: [NCBERTIE] Grist Mill Petition George RYAN Esq. Dear Group, David MEADE lived in Nansemond. I have found him in a few records of the Parish. I believe Aaron ELLIS knew David MEADE. I believe Aaron ELLIS was somehow involved within the set up of Society Parish in Bertie, but I have not found any records to support this, except in the estate sale of Aaron ELLIS, money was paid to Lemuel REDDICK who was a Warden in Nansemond and collected money from people to take care of the poor within the Parish...sort of like the bonds in the Bastardy Bonds. John MORRIS was the father of Chappel Hill in Society Parish and at one time Aaron ELLIS gave the MORRIS name land right next door to his own land. Anyway, here is the verbatim copy of the original. Cathy 1751 Grist Mill Petition by Aaron ELLIS May Court This record is from Bertie County, Misc. Records, Grist Mills 010.928.9 NCArchives. RYAN is desirous of building a mill, where your petitioners and many other people are yearly supplyed with fish, with very little trouble and expense;...And many of the people that are yearly supplyed with fish out of this run, are neither able to raise a sufficiency of meat to support their families, nor able to buy fish for them. Your petitioners therefore humbly prayeth that your Worships would take these things into consideration and not suffer the said W. RYAN nor any other person to build a mill cross His run nor stop it any other way, that is of so much benefit to poor people for fish, who will Infallibly suffer if they are deprived of getting fish without buying them; which will be the case if this run is stopt, as there is no other place these poor people can apply for fish without buying--- And your Petitioners as in duty bound will further pray(if there is more I don't have it...cathy) The petitioners have all signed their names below... of interest to me is William BRYANT...cathy David GASKINS, Wm S. Dear Group, The following records are a few that I picked up from the archives. They are names I am working on but thought I would send them to the archives, maybe something will be of research help to others. I feel sensitive about the record type, however, they are records of people and people do what people do. Cathy Virginia, these are separate records. The following pages will contain the full verbatim record on the Bastardy Bonds of Bertie County for various surnames. Does anyone know how I can get a copy of the hand drawn map accompanying, "The Windsor Story?" My gggg grandmother, Mary Phillaw, was drawn and purchased lot # 46 in 1783. I have down loaded the text of the story from the Bertie web site but the map will not print. I would like to have it to pin point the location for the next time I'm in Windsor. The above individual lived in the Manteo, NC area until she died about 10 days ago. I was wondering if we might have any members in that area that might know the exact date of death. She was born in 1921. She was a second cousin. Thanks Jim
Can anyone help me or give me information on this book? Last year I purchased a book from Harvey Benton Harrison, III. He annouced his book on many of the genealogy lists. I wrote to him before he ever finished it. He was very helpful and gave me much information about one of my lines with references. When he finished the book, I sent him the money and extra for shipping it to Denmark, as this is where I am living for now. I waited several months and he finally wrote me saying that it had come back to him very messed up by the mail. He offered to mail me the book on CD. I gladly accepted this as it would be easier for me to bring back to the states when we move back. Well, it never came. I have tried to contact him nummerous times. Now of course I am wondering if I got taken. I want to give this man the benefit of a doubt....but a year? Possibly something has actually happened to this man.
