My mother Edna Earl Harrell graduated from Republican High School in 1927. Her English teacher was Miss Vashti Hoggard and a Mr. Peele was Principal. My mother was born 1-15-12 and died 2-28-84. There were only eleven grades in NC rural public schools then and mother was only 15 when she graduated. She was, I believe , the only graduate that year to go to college. She graduated from Chowan Baptist Female Institute in 1932 with honors. She first taught school at Riverside in Bertie and after her marriage moved to Norfolk and taught for 32 years in the Norfolk City and Norfolk County school systems. She had many stories about her high school days at Republican High School and she was also a member of Republican Baptist Church, as was her parents Joe Jack Jesse Harrel and Mary Alice Thomas Harrell. GENEAHOLICS' SPOUSES GO TO THE DOGS by H. David Morrow Much has been written lately about the tragedy of addiction to genealogy. While one must pity those afflicted with this malady, their own disorientation pales when compared to that of those who must live with geneaholics. The geneaholic can seek counseling, can join a support group (often called a Society), and may soon even be able to get into a 12-step program. There is none of this for the spouse of a geneaholic. Night after night, male spouses must endure cold dinners, if there are any at all. They must do their own washing in order to have enough underwear to wear to work. Their beds are only rarely made and the sheets changed only when threadbare. If the spouse is older and has to make in-the-dark trips to the bathroom during the night, he or she must step carefully so as not to kick over a pile of papers. The real danger is slipping on a single piece of paper and breaking a hip. The spouse must endure interruptions of sporting events on TV in order to hear about the discovery of a relative who was "not in my direct line, but a sister of the cousin of the sixth child of my great-great-great-grandmother's third husband." Further, spouses are supposed to administer back rubs when the geneaholic has spent far too much time sitting in front of a keyboard and monitor. Spouses are also supposed to fix computer glitches that may arise from downloading megabytes of "relevant, relative" information. We are expected to drive to cemeteries, deliver film to and pick up pictures from the processor, make endless trips to the post office, take days off to visit obscure courthouses looking for sometimes elusive and mostly unreadable documents from the 1800s, and generally go to bed alone. There are, however, some upsides. The only real household chores I must do, besides cook my own dinner, are replace light bulbs in my wife's desk lamp and change cartridges in her printer. (We started using paper plates when the dishwasher and sink both were filled to capacity.) I haven't emptied the trash since I learned about the addiction. I get to spend quality time with my dog, who never regales me with stories about related horse thieves and murderers. I am considering starting a new organization called D.O.G.S., which stands for Despondents of Geneaholic Spouses. This is a good name because when the meeting notice comes, the mail person will think you are merely going to a group that appreciates dogs. The carrier won't, therefore, be able to inform all the neighbors that an addict lives on the block. Besides, when I don't give full attention to my wife's e-mail from a cousin she never knew she had, when I am not ecstatic over a new piece of information, and when I don't accept her invitation to spend hours in the library looking at census films, she thinks I'm a dog anyway. It took its from the Republican Baptist Church (est 1828), and that name originated because the church building was used as a community center. It is noted on the Gilmer CSA maps. Hi-- Quickly on lunch hour I did some searching and found that in 1850 Aquilia 44 and Abigail 39 had daughters Martha 10 and Celia 1. (Next door to my ggg grandfather Worley Miller.) Could this Martha Miller have married John R. Johnson and thus Celia was living with her sister in 1860? Didn't find a record of their marriage. In 1870 Celia, 19 was living at home with mother Abigail and 5 siblings, no Martha. Since Martha Johnson was listed as 21 in 1860, this would work with Martha Miller being 10 in 1850. So, working hypothesis: sisters Martha and Celia both married men named John Johnson, one from Bertie County and the other from Norway. Thanks to Dee Miller for the clarification. We have here two John Johnsons who happened to figure in Celia Miller's life. But the coincidence of names is only that, no kinship. One was a Bertie County native who was of British extraction (with possibly some Native American ancestry); he's my great-great uncle, second son of John/Jack and Abbygail. I've posted John/Jack's 1861 estate papers on this site FYI. The other John Johnson was a Norwegian native who lived in Norfolk County, VA (where both I and my father grew up) and married Celia after she left Bertie. John R. was born 1 September 1833 and died 7 October 1878. No clue as to why Celia would have lived with him and his wife Martha; hopefully other Johnson researchers will have some idea. What intrigues me about this is that perhaps my dad, growing up in the same area where the Norwegian John and the Bertie-born Celia settled, might have heard of or known them, and somehow gotten confused and thought that his Bertie County Johnson ancestors had been Scandinavian? Might have known of the couple through the Miller side too since his maternal grandmother was Lillie Miller Dunlow who settled also in Norfolk County. KPJ PS-- Harry L.
