I need help figuring out the geography on the deeds below. Our William Willson/Wilson m. Rebecca Braswell in 1720. Shortly before their marriage, his new wife had patented land in Chowan Precinct on the south side of the Meherrin River in 1719. I am trying to place this Bertie land sold in 1715 below and witnessed by a William Wilson, in relation to the land mentioned in the deeds which follow it, and which I know are our William Willson/Wilson Apr 16, 1715 Bertie: CHARLES MERRITT and wife ELEANOR and PETER EVANS to RICHARD BARFIELD of VA., for 30 pounds, 380 acres on South Side of Chowan River on Deep Creek. Land granted by patent of Peter Evans adj. JAMES PECK, JOHN FIERYBENT. Wit: WILLIAM WILSON, PETER EVANS. (Bertie Co. Deed Book _?, p.385) [Today the Meherrin River empties into the Chowan River above Winton, Hertford Co. The Chowan looks to be an extension of the Nottoway and the Blackwater which join right at the 4 county corner borders of Va counties of Southampton VA and Isle of Wight and the NC counties of Northampton and Gates. The only place where the Chowan would have a south side, as opposed to an east or west side seems to be between Winton and Harrellsville, placing this land in today's Hertford Co., probably near Winton, as that is the most easterly flowing section.] Does this seem correct geographically? Mar 1, 1719/1720 Patent to REBECCA BRASWELL for 320 ac in Chowan precinct on SOUTH SIDE OF MAHERRIN RIVER, joining BRASWELLS BRANCH, the COUNTY LINE and the meanders of the River. Wit: Chas Eden, Thos Pollock, Free. Jones, Richd. Sanderson, John Hecklefield. NC Patent Bk 8, p. 184. [This would have been the old county line, meaning this land would have to have been closer to where the Meherrin enters the Chowan...see the deed below which describes this land when it was resold]: Jan 10, 1743 Northampton: JAMES JOYNER of Edgecombe to SAMUEL HAYES of Northampton 5 pounds cash, 50 as parcel of land granted to me by a deed from patent to Rebecca Braswell of Mar 1, 1719. SOUTH SIDE OF MAHERRIN , adj. ELLIOTT, the OLD CO LINE, THOMAS BOYKINS and the River. Wit: NATHAN WILLIAMS, NEHEMIAH JOYNER, FRANCIS GREGORY. Feb Ct 1743 BK 1, p. 379 I understand the NC/VA line was moved north at some point. How far was the VA/NC line moved, and in what year? Marilyn from Ohio
