    1. RE: [NCBERTIE] Tax List
    2. Phil Jones
    3. It's the number of taxable people whom the named person reported, and for whom they were liable to pay the tax. It didn't necessarily include everyone in the household; sometimes sons still living at home were listed, and taxed, in their own right (how well they got on with their father might have been a factor). From 1784 a poll was defined as "freemen and male servants twenty one years old and upwards, and slaves male and female between the age of twelve and fifty years." From 1801 free males over the age of fifty were exempted from tax and in 1817 this was lowered to forty five. Prior to 1776 the lower age limit for taxation for white men was 16 but between then and 1784 the rules for who was taxable varied quite a bit. White women were not taxable at any time. Is this the number of people in the household including him/herself that were taxed or did it exclude the head of the household.

    1. [NCBERTIE] Phelps Cemetary
    2. Suzan
    3. This is located on the right of Davis Road down a dirt lane on the land that was originally purchased by James Phelps from William Ashburn in August 1802. This land has remained in this Phelps family since and is presently owned by Jack Phelps of Windsor, gg-grandson of James. This information was provided to me by Jack's wife Lucille and and at her request I am posting it. The original house still remains but is falling in. It is estimated that this house was built about the time of Hope Plantation but they are not sure. It has a cellar as well. The kitchen was detached from the house and what is left has fallen down. There was a grist mill directly behind the house and there are numerous barns still standing. A second house was built many years ago right beside the first house and is used today for lodging hunters. Buried in the cemetary: James W. Phelps born 1863? died ----- Age 17 years 6 months and 3 days CD Phelps (Charlie David) born August 7, 1833 died January 2, 1900 Age 66 years 4 months and 16 days Caroline P. Phelps born July 17, 1833 died January 12, 1910 Age 70 years 6 months and 8 days our darling infant son of Mr. & Mrs. CD Phelps born December 28, 1922 Footmarker of RHP or RRP (Robert Phelps) Two daughters of CD and Caroline Phelps who never married are buried here both of whom died after 1920. Martha A. and Dora L. Phelps It is also suspected that Charles Joseph Phelps, son of Charles David and Caroline Phelps is buried beside his mother but there is no marker.
