    1. [NCBERTIE] Traditions about Indian ancestry in n. central Bertie
    2. Kenneth Johnson
    3. Dear fellow researchers, In the course of researching my ancestors, I found that family traditions about Native American ancestry were strong in several of my lines. All my father's people were from the area north of Windsor and east of present-day US 13; Johnsons, Dunlows, Whites, Hugheses, Millers, Perrys, Cobbs, Willifords, and Butlers to name the major 19th century families. Of these, I find that Dunlows have preserved, in several independent lines, traditions about Indian ancestry although they are vague about details. To a lesser extent, this is found among Johnsons. I've been told it's true of Butlers, and of course know it is true of Cales and Castellows. What I'd like to know is what other families from the Marvel Swamp/Pell Mell Pocosin area (around present day Askewville) have a traditional claim to Indian ancestry. So far it all seems to go back to the Butlers; that is the Dunlows intermarried extensively with them in the 19th c., and the Johnsons to a lesser extent, and belief in Native American ancestry seems to be stronger in these lines the closer you get to Butlers. (For example, Josiah Dunlow was called "half-Indian" in family traditions, and this was alleged to be through his mother, Susanah Butler.) Are there any other similar traditions in nearby families? Paul Johnson PS-- I went to the Haliwa-Saponi Pow Wow this weekend in Warren County, NC, and since this tribe absorbed some Tuscarora long ago, I talked to several Saponi about family names that might have come from that tribe. No one recognized any of the Bertie County names listed above, except Johnsons which they said they had some of in their community. Mostly Richardsons and Lynches as best I can tell. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Games - play chess, backgammon, pool and more http://games.yahoo.com/

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2UB.2ACI/10.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I'm not a Todd or Miller researcher but Frances Amelia Todd married John H. Miller 11/25/1855, they had the following children....Alice Elizabeth Miller b. ca 1857, John Calvin Miller b ca 1860 and Mary Miller b. ca 1864. If my recollection is correct I think these children or some of them left and went to Hertford County where there father was from. Frances Amelia Todd was a daughter of Soloman Todd and Levina Hoggard, her husband John H. Miller was killed in the Civil War in 1862, she later had two children out of wedlock. They were Jennie Miller b. ca. 1864 and Louis (Lewis) Watson Miller b. 6/8/1870. I have not seen where any of these children had the Todd surname. If I'm not mistaken Louis (Lewis) Watson Miller was the first person buried in the Ross Church Cemetery. Louis Watson Millers son Latham Lee (Bing) Miller b. 1910 d. 2000 had this family researched by a professional genealogist in or ca. 1980 and this info is recorded in his book. Hope this helps.

    1. [NCBERTIE] "The McDaniels of Northampton County, North Carolina and Allied Families"
    2. Dawn Jeppesen
    3. As I have posted before, I have been trying to get help locating Harvey Harrison in regards to a book I purchased from him last year. I never received this book. Many of you have tried to help me and I thank you. Unfortunately, no results have been produced. I have tried to call and e-mail Mr. Harrison with no response. I do know that since leaving numerous messages on his answering machine, he has accessed my site with MyFamilyCom. He is aware that I am trying to communicate with him. I feel that I have been taken for a scam. I am asking everyone to keep their eyes open for anything regarding this supposed book. I can only hope that this person will right his wrong. I will surely let everyone know if this were to ever happen. I am including the information that he posted again in advertising. "The McDaniels of Northampton County, North Carolina and Allied Families" contains the ancestors and descendants of Peter McDaniel (b. c1751, Pasquotank County, NC and d. c1826, Northampton County, NC). It traces his ancestors back to Michael McDaniel (b. c1640, d. c1689, Pasquotank Precinct, Albermarle County, NC) and his descendants through his sons Elisha McDaniel (Northampton County, NC), Bartlett McDaniel (Leon County, FL), Frederick McDaniel (Jefferson County, GA), and Sarah Anne McDaniel (wife of Joab Lassiter, Calloway County, KY). It also includes substantial information regarding the allied families of Baker, Benthall, Blanchard, Blythe, Bolton, Boyce, Bryant, Futrell, Griffin, Hurdle, Joyner, and Lassiter. The book is over 248 pages, fully indexed, fully documented, fully illustrated with documents, maps, and pictures, covered with vinyl front and back covers, and comb bound to make additions easy. Cost is $40.00, including shipping and handling. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2UB.2ACI/588.1.1 Message Board Post: Rebecca, I probably can't tell you what you want to know because your question is also one of my questions. The gist of what I have is in this Maury County, TN deed dated Sept 29, 1853, " We John Adkison Steven Elliot and Sarah Elliot his wife, W.A. Cauthen and Elizabeth Cauthen his wife Issac M. Goins and Mary Goins his wife have this day bargained and sold and do hereby transfer and convey to William Adkison a tract of land on which he now resides for and in consideration of seventy nine dollars to them paid a tract of land in the State of Tennessee Maury County and District number one containing by estimation seventy nine acres and ninety-nine poles be the same more or less ....." Witnesses: T.R. Allen, James Ezell, and Robert Stevens William (1812), John (1814), Mary Lucy (1816), and Elizabeth (1819) are the Tennessee-born children of Jordan Adkison and Charity Ezell. This appears to be a case of an older brother buying out the interest of his brothers and sisters in inherited land. If this is the case, then what is Sarah's claim? I have found no reference to her as a daughter, though she could be a child of a previous marriage of either Charity or Jordan. Jordan did have a previous marriage to Martha Robison in Bertie County, NC and possibly at least two children there. But where did the land come from? I suspect that it came from Charity's side, though I have no concrete evidence. I don't know who James Ezell is, but he also earlier sold land to William Adkison. All of that leaves me with questions I have not been able to answer. The connection between Sarah must be strong, since Charity chose to spend her decling years with Sarah and Steven Elliott (assuming she had a choice). I hope this may be of at least a little help to you and thay somebody will know something that will solve some of my mysteries. Regards Audie Adkison

Hopefully though I'll be bringing her home soon. Marilyn
