The only name I recognize here is the surname Cake. I saw two or three documents in the Martin County Clerk of Court's office with this surname. I can't remember if they were deeds or wills. I believe one of each. If I remember correctly the Cakes were associated with the family of William Williams for whom Williamston was named. It seems that I do remember there were no Cake sons in the documents, but there was a Cake daughter. I paid a little more attention to these documents than I normally would have, because I was looking for Clarks and thought at first that the Cake spelling could be an incorrect spelling of Clark. It was not. The Cake middle name as grantor in you deed could be the link to a tie amongst these people. Jo ROBERSON Prytherch

Collen (or Cullen or Colin) Cowand is in my Cowand chart. He was the son of a William Cowand and Maybee Cake Cowand. William Cake Filgo was the son of Ann Cake (sister to Maybee) and Anthony Filgo --- which makes William Cake Filgo and Collen Cowand first cousins. Collen had a brother named Jonathan Cowand who was married to Sarah Sowell. Sarah was the daughter of Obediah Sowell, Sr., who's will was written in 1802. Sarah also had a brother named Obediah. As to your main interest, Joshua Wilson, I just don't know if he was kin to the others. I know that Wilsons lived near the others in Bertie, Ross Church area, and that a Wilson married a niece of Collen Cowand. Wish I could be of more help. Maybe others might know a connection. John

Wheeee! I found Flag Run Gut with all your help. It was on p. 43 in Delorme's NC Atlas & Gazetteer which I had bought after someone on e-mail had recommended it. I thought I had searched so thoroughly that I was astounded to find it. Just where you all had said it would be. Thank you so much. I couldn't believe the responses I got from all you fellow genealogists and researchers. I really appreciate being able to find the land being bought, sold, and lived upon by my ancestors. Thanks again. Joan
to all, As many of you know most families in NORTH CAROLINA can trace several of their families to NANSEMOND county, VIRGINIA. It has been a real problem gathering info. on the families of NANSEMOND county because of so many records destroyed, however there are many that have survived since then. One real help to researchers in this area are the records of the surrounding counties, SOUTHAMPTON & ISLE OF WIGHT counties, VIRGINIA & CHOWAN, GATES, HERTFORD, NORTHAMPTON & BERTIE counties, NORTH CAROLINA. What many researchers don't know is that the families that lived near the border of NORTH CAROLINA in VIRGINIA ARE the same families listed in the records of BERTIE, CHOWAN, NORTHAMPTON counties but especially in GATES & HERTFORD counties, these are the SAME families. I just typed and sent a lot to the RAWLS, BERTIE list and will now send a lot to the BERTIE, HERTFORD 7 RAWLS list pertaing to the RAWLS & associated families. many of the records from HERTFORD county are long and full of names so I will have to "cut out" a lot of info. the records were destroyed for much of HERTFORD but what was left was extremely helpful and pertain directly to the families of BERTIE county as well more later BOBBY RAWLS BIG SPRING, TEXAS

Bobby, I was wondering if you had come across the surname CONNER, in your documents? I have seen HARRELL, RAWLS and DUNNING associated with CONNER. I am trying to find the parents of Noah Elmo CONNER, b-about 1805. There were Thomas, Wright and William CONNER about the time frame that could have possibly been his father. I am leaning toward believing Thomas was his father as he was the only one listed in the 1810 Census having a son 10 yrs or younger. There is not much information that I have seen with Thomas CONNER listed. There is the Will of Charles DUNNING posted by Joyce Britt Dunning. This document is dated 1796 and is witnessed by Thomas. Also are 2 RAWLS that witnessed this. Any help or ideas you may have are most welcomed. Dawn --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
