    1. [NCBERTIE] Rascoe
    2. My 4th great grandparents were William Rascoe and Rachel Harrell whose marriage bond in Bertie County is dated December 10, 1777. Rachel's parents have been positively identified through the will of her father, Jesse Harrell, dated September 19, 1786 and probated during the February term of 1788 in Bertie County. Identified in his will, Jesse named his wife Fereby, daughters Priscilla, Ferebee, and Rachel; sons Josiah, Jesse, Joshua, and Jonathan. We have not been able to identify or prove who the parents of William Rascoe were or exactly when and where William Rascoe was born or what relation he was to the other Rascoe found in Bertie and surrounding counties before 1800. It is known from post Revoluntionary War settlement records that William had a brother named Teagle Rascoe. This name is often spelled Teakle, Teele, ect in the old records. Teagle Rascoe was listed in the 1769-70 tax records of Hertford County. Teagle Rascoe enlisted in Captain Vaughan's Company of the 7th North Carolina Regiment of Continental Soldiers on January 14, 1777 and was promoted to Corporal in January of 1778. Teagle Rascoe died while serving in the army at Valley Forge, Pa. on February 24, 1778. In August of 1792, William Rascoe lay claim to Teagle Rascoe back military service at the court in Orange County N.C. In depositions given by both William Rascoe and H. Murfree of Hertford County, William was identified as Teagle Rascoe brother and the only living brother. William Rascoe was granted and received Teagle's back military pay. As the only living heir of Teagle Rascoe, William Rascoe also received a 640 acres bounty land grant in the middle Tennessee Territory granted by the state of North Carolina to each North Carolina soldier of the Revoluntion. The land grant was for Teagles service and went to William Rascoe the only living heir of Teagle. During the Revolution, William Rasco served in a North Carolina Militia Company. By March of 1779 he was a Lieutenant in a company commanded by Captain Charles Rhodes. The company was engaged in battles with the British in South Carolina and Georgia. By April of 1781, William Rascoe was elected Captain of his militia Company. William and Rachel Rascoe purchased lands from John Morris, John Wimberly, and Guin Harrell on several occations between 1783 and 1792. This property seems to have been in the Flag Run Gut area of western Bertie County. In the fall of 1794, William and Rachel sold this land to Jesse Averitt and William Pugh. William and Rachel Rasco then migrated with their children to Sumner County Tennessee, then to Robertson County Tennessee, and then to Christian County Kentucky. William and some of his grown children owned property in Montgomery and Stewart Counties in Tennessee and in Christian and that part of Christian which later became Trigg County Kentucky. William Rascoe died in March or May of 1806 and his estate was settled in Stewart County Tennessee. His widow, Rachel Rasco, continued to show up in the census and tax record of Christian County Kentucky untill 1826-27. It is believe but not proven that William Rascoe was a near relative of Alexander Rascoe or Roscoe who was enumerated in the 1790 census of Hertford County N.C. and married Rachel Howell in Bertie County on April 30, 1791. Alexander and his family migrated to Sumner County Tennessee in 1795. Some of his descendants also moved to Christian County Kentucky. It is believed but unproven that William Rascoe was also a near relative of James Isma Rascoe of both Hertford and Bertie Counties and was likely a near relative of Catherine Elizabeth Rascoe who was 1st married to George Wynne Sessums and 2nd to Rev. William Williams and lived on the Chowan River in Hertford County. I have been told that a William Rasco and Sarah, his wife, was involved in litigation with a Joseph Jones and his wife Charity and the case was recorded in the 1759 Court Records of either Hertford or Bertie County. It is possible that this William and Sarah may have been my William Rascoe parents or perhaps this was my William and Sarah was a wife prior to his marriage to Rachel Harrell. If anyone has run across this litigation record in the court records or can assist me with additional data which might help identify who the parents of my William Rascoe were and his relation to other Rascoe in Bertie County prior to 1800, I would appreciate it very much. 3. I forgot to say in my first message that there is a cemetery in Bear Grass Township that has many of the King Harrison descendants buried in it. The Martin County Genealogy Society has just published an updated book on the cemeteries in Bear Grass Township. It has a list of the people buried in that as well as other cemeteries in the township. Contact Easter Mizell at ermizell@coastalnet.com if you are interested in the book. Jo ROBERSON Prytherch

Also, my GG Grandfather, Israel Roberson married Mary Eliza Harrison, daughter of John Harrison and granddaughter of King Harrison, after Israel's first wife, my GG Grandmother Milly Perry Roberson died. Israel and Mary Eliza Harrison Roberson had six children, Crisey, Susan, John Israel, William H., David and Mary between 1840 and 1854. Jo ROBERSON Prytherch

    1. [NCBERTIE] Introduction; King HARRISON and Jennie WHITE
    2. Stephen Scurletis
    3. Hello all! I have just recently joined this list and thought I'd introduce myself. I am Stephen Scurletis of St. Louis, MO. My mother is Christine Harrison Scurletis, born in Bear Grass, Martin County and now lives in Williamston. I have been researching her ancestry, almost all of the lines of which seem to have been in Martin County since around or before 1800, which has made my task a bit easier as I have had to look mainly in only one courthouse for records! Surnames include: HARRISON, GURGANUS, KNOX, WHITLEY, MIZELL, MOBLEY, ROGERSON, and BIGGS. I know that King HARRISON (d.1836), my GGGG Grandfather through my maternal grandfather's line, obtained a marriage bond in Bertie Co. in 1786 to marry Jenny WHITE, that he bought land from a John OXLEY, Jr. in 1786, and that a Christopher HARRISON was appointed guardian of John OXLEY, Jr. in 1767, and that King and other HARRISONS were recorded as having purchased items at some estate sales in the 1790's. I also suspect that James HARRISON (1769-1840) of Martin Co., my GGGG Grandfather through my maternal grandmother's line, is probably related to King. These are the clues I have so far. I shall be visiting my mother in Williamston in late May, and am hoping to get over to the courthouse in Windsor for at least a day and see if I can dig anything further up on King and or James. I am of course curious to know if anyone else is working on HARRISON's in Bertie. I have been enjoying the discussions on this apparently rather active list! Stephen Scurletis

His daughter was Maybee and she was married to William COWAND, of whom I am a direct descendant. This has been mis-reported often, even in some well meaning books. Collen (also Cullen and Colin) was one of several sons of William and Maybee. The Obediah Sowell mentioned in the original inquiry was the father of Sarah, who married Collen's brother, Jonathan COWAND. I have much more on this if you would like to contact me. John Cowand

He had been named gdn of Josiah Wilson and his sister Harriet, niece and nephew of Ann Wilson Cotton after the death of their first guardian, their Uncle William Wilson, Ann's brother. On the second record, Joshua Wilson exr, was the father of witness, John R. Wilson. William Dickens the other exr, was the brother of Elizabeth Dicken Wilson, wife of William Wilson mentioned above and mother of Lewis Dicken Wilson for whom Wilson Co NC is named. 3. Thank you, John! Can you tell me which Wilsons were living in the Ross Church are and where is the Ross Church area? Did any of your Sowells end up in middle TN? Although I am not actively researching the Sowells currently, Sowell/Sewell is one of our connecting families who came out of VA through NC to Northern middle TN and then by 1830s to Mo. where they married some Mizelles. If I remember correctly, some of these Sowells of yours ended up in IL along with some Mizelles. I have always wondered it the family is connected. > From: Johncowand@aol.com > Date: Fri, 17 May 2002 13:45:23 EDT > To: NCBERTIE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [NCBERTIE] WM CAKE FILGO TO OBEDIAH SOWELL WIT: JOSHUA WILSON & > COLLEN ... > Resent-From: NCBERTIE-L@rootsweb.com > Resent-Date: Fri, 17 May 2002 11:45:36 -0600 > > Hi, Marilyn. William Bryan & Elizabeth Smith. Frederick was supposedly born around 1761 in Pitt Co., North Carolina" What documentation do you have that the above is true? I have a copy of the marriage bond issued in Bertie County, NC 14 Feb 1780, from the North Carolina archives, for Frederick Bryan and Amelia Pugh. I would like to be able to document the fact that Frederick Bryan is indeed the son of William Bryan and Elizabeth Smith. I would also like to be able to get some form of documentation that Louisa Bryan was the daughter of Frederick and Amelia Bryan. The dates that I have seem to question that relationship. If frederick and Amelia were married in 1780 Louisa should have been born sometime after 1780, but she was married to John Jolley in 1782 and her first child, Frederick Jolley was born in 1783. I have good reason to believe John and louisa were married 1782 and the birth of my GGGrandfather, Henry Jolley, their son, was born 26 Aug 1789. Louisa could not have been his mother at 8-9 years of age. Is it possible that Louisa and Frederick were brother and sister? The estimate! d birth dates I have for them are 1750 for Frederick and 1756 for Louisa. Can you help me figure this out? Is there any indication that William and Elizabeth Bryan had a daughter named Louisa? I have several references that Louisa was the daughter of Frederick but none of them are documented. I hope you have some information that can shed some light on this question. Thanks, Jack Davis
