    1. RE: [NCBERTIE] Minutes Transcribes
    2. Phil Jones
    3. Virginia, This mentions "Thursday 11". Assuming the courts were held in February, May, August and November the only Thursday 11's in 1728 thru 1732 were: February 11, 1731 November 11, 1731 May 11, 1732 Since the minutes we know the dates for are from May and August 1730 February 11, 1731 seems most likely. 1. [NCBERTIE] John CLARK, Revolutionary Patriot
    2. prytherch
    3. I have been wading through CLARK history in the Martin, Bertie, Hertford County areas looking for information on the ancestors of John CLARK, Revolutionary Patriot of Martin County. In his deposition to the courts regarding his service in the Revolution, John CLARK stated that he was born in Hertford County and lived there until after the Revolution. John CLARK was a much used name in the northeastern NC area from the earliest days, so most of the information on CLARKs in that area seems to lead to other John CLARKs. I did find a few things that may be of interest to other descendants of this particular John CLARK. Clarence E. Ratcliff's book, NC TAXPAYERS, vol. 2, p. 39 shows a John CLARK and a John CLARK, Jr. in Hertford County in both 1779 and 1784. Mary Best Bell's COLONIAL BERTICE COUNY, NC, DEED BOOKS A-H, 1720-1757 has the following deeds that mention a John CLARK that may have been an ancestor of Patriot John's. D 200 HENRY VIZE, carpenter, to JOHN CLARK Jan. 10, 1734/35 "for loe I bear" 100 A. on SS Horse Swamp. Wit: CHRIS. HOLLIMAN, ISAAC BRAWLER, FINCHER HAYNES. August Court 1735. *. E 129 HENRY VIZE, carpenter, TO WILLIAM MIDDLETON, carpenter Dec. 8 1736. 60 pds. for 150 A. On Horse Swamp adj. JOHN CLARK. Subject only to quit rens and "one morgage to the Treasury of Bertie Precinct for thirty pound (to wit: the payments hereafter growing due only excepted)...." Wit: ANTHONY WEBB, JAMES OVERTON, NATHANIEL NICHOLAS. May Court 1737. JOHN WYNNS D. C/C. (Deputy Clerk of Court) E 182 THOMAS BRADFORD & WIFE ELIZABETH & SAMUEL NORWOOD & WIFE MARY TO BARRABY MELTON Sept. 3 1737. 20 pds. for 150 A. on NS Moratuck River Beginning at the bent of a Branch, binding on MELTON's own land...." Part of a tract granted to WILLIAM REEVES for 440 A. dated March 13, 1721. Wit: JAMES SMITH, JOHN CLARK, JOHN PATTERSON. N. C. Court Nov. 1737. * E 500 WILLIAM MIDDLETON TO ANTHONY WEBB Aug. 16, 1739. 80 pds. for 150 A. On Horse Swamp adj. JOHN CLARK. Land bought by Middleton of HENRY VIZE between JOHN CLARK's "and the land called BARNESE's". Wit: FRANCIS PARKER, HENRY VIZE. Aug. Court. 1739 *. E557 JAMES WILLIAM & WIFE REBECCA TO ROBERT HICKS, "marrinor? October 17, 1739. 140 pds. for *. JAMES WILLIAMS "late of Boston in the county of Suffolk and Province of Massachusetts Bay in New England Marrinor:. Land on NS Roanoke River and ES Jump and Run. Adj. "Land formerly belonging to JAMES BLOUNT byt now JEFFREY BUTLER...". Adj. THOMAS PAGE. Wit: JOHN CLARK. LOTT LEWIS. December 1, 1739. Signed: "Suffolk Boston Oct'r 17th 1739 HABIJAH SAVAGE (Jus Pec)". W. SMITH C. J. "Recorded in ye secretarys office RATH RILL sec... Rec'd on the day of the date hereof Mr. ROBT HICKS the sum of one hundred and forty Pound in full consideration and purchase of the afore Devised Premisses by je JAMES WILLIAMS...". G 553 WILLIAM WEBB TO JOHN SUMNER of Chowan Co. Oct. 28, 1752 10 pds. for 150 A. Land on NS Wiccacon Creek at Horse Swamp "below the Hows:. Adj. JOHN CLARK. Being the plantation the HENRY VIZE sold to WILLIAM MIDILTON and s'd MIDILTON sold to ANTHONY and by him given to WILLIAM WEBB. Wit: MOSES SUMNER, WILLIAM SKINNER. SAMUEL SKINNER. Aug. Court 1753. *. Four of these deeds, D200, E129, E500 and G553 obviously refer to the same JOHN CLARK. The other two may refer to a different JOHN CLARK since the property descriptions are not as clearly related. According to William S. Powell's THE NORTH CAROLINA GAZETTEER, "Wiccacon River is formed by the junction of several small streams in Hoggard Swamp in s Hertford County. It flows e into Chowas River. Approx. 17 mi. lon. Appears as Weecaunse Creek on the Moseley map, 1733, Veecaune Creek on the Collet map, 1770; and as Wiccacon Creek on the Richardson map, 1808. See also Weyanoke Creek". Hertford County was formed in 1759 from Chowan, Bertie and Northampton Counties. The mention of Wiccacon Creek in one of the four related deeds and of Horse Swamp which according to Powell, "rises in s Hertford County and flows se and ne to join Flat Swamp in forming Bear Swamp" in all four of these deeds tells us that these properties were in the part of Bertie County that became part of Hertford County. Does anyone have any comment on the location of the other two deeds in relation to Hertford County? Any more info on this particular group of CLARK's? Jo ROBERSON Prytherch

Some recent data said he was from Harborne Parish, Stafford County, England. Not knowing who did this research, I can not say this is confirmed, though it does sound probable. Looking at my map of the UK, I noticed Harborne is just south of SOUTHWICK, England. This is now making me wonder if my Smithwick clan is not really part of the SMITH clan who moved from Southwick to Harborne, being called the 'Smiths from Southwick', and later taking on the surname of 'SMITHWICK'. At read of the history of the time shows people's names were not only based on their occupations, but on where they came from. There are no other cities or towns in England with a name ending in 'WICK'. There are also not many surnames ending in 'WICK'. It would be interesting to know how the city od SOUTHWICK got its name? This is just conjecture ! on my part, though I believe it interesting.

At the time I found that a Henry Smithick arrived on the Good Ship Globe in 1636. The surname was not speeled exactly the same and some of my fellow Smithwick researchers at the time said they did not believe this was Henry (Hugh) Smithwick for several reason. One of these is that there was no trace of this Henry Smithick after he arrived, and also Wiliam Eyres did not claim headright on Henry (Hugh) Smithwick until May of 1642. While working overseas I had the opportunity to stop in London for a few days. While there I made contact with a couple of Smithwick families. I then learned, in the UK, the 'W' in SMITHICK is silent, and the surname is pronounced 'SMITHICK". I knew then the Globe was the correct ship. The ship mate making the passenger list spelled the name on the passenger list as it was pr! onounced, and not as actually spelled.

    1. [NCBERTIE] Gates Co Marriage Request
    2. Hello Everyone, I have two requests for assistance: First, I am very frustrated with myself. I cannot find my copy of the page I copied during a visit a couple of years ago to DAR from the Gates Co marriage book that shows the marriages of LANDEN/LANDIN/LANDING women ca. 1790 - 1815. I have the page with the Landing men. Would one of you happen to have access to the Gates Co marriage book and relay to me the marriages during the period mentioned for women? Second, I am trying to determine if Mary Harrell Landing, widow of Mills, who married (2) Uriah Eure, Jr. about 1803, might have remarried after about 1809 and before 1823? Is there a Mary EURE marriage for this period. What I am trying to do is determine if the James Landing, who died in 1821/22 in Gates County, is the father or brother of Mills Landing. I have a copy of James Landing's inventory sale and purchasers, but it appears as though the account of the division of the estate ordered by the court didn't survive (or hasn't been microfilmed). No Mary Eure participated in the estate sale. Thanks in advance, Janet Hunter
