http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/bertie/photos.html 1937 Lewiston Woodville HS Graduation class We're looking for a photo of this class. Does anyone know where we could get one? We have the graduation program, but no class photo. Someone's father was in this class, and she doesn't have an early photo of him, so this would mean a great deal. Thanks. Virginia
Oh I believe he had two gun shots to his head, I just think he didn't do it to himself. The Chief and Mr. Nicholls went up to the door and asked for Sanderlin. He was told Sanderlin was not there, But the Chief replied that he knew better and that he had a warrant for his arrest and demanded admittance. He then pushed the door open. Whereupon, Sanderlin fired two shots, the first just missing the Chief's head - the second taking effect on the right side of the chest, piercing the lung and entering the heart. Mr. Nicholls caught the Chief and lead him from the hallway to the porch and sat him down. The Chief replied - "wait a minute", as if to make further attempt, But strength failed, sick stomach ensued and Mr. Nicholls at once started for town for a doctor. But before Mr. Nicholls had gone fifty yards he heard two more shots. Sanderlin, realizing his deed, ran into an adjacent room and fired two balls into his own head and died instantly. A large posse of men, on learning the news, went over to the scene, thinking the two shots Sanderlin fired in the house after the deed was a ruse to escape. But not so. The Chief lived but a few minutes after the doctor arrived and was conscious only a few seconds after the wound. Sanderlins death was instantaneous. Excitement in our little town for a short while was intense and at a feverish heat, Because the crime for which Sanderlin was wanted did not justify his murderous resistance. But on learning of the suicide quiet prevailed and a gloom of sorrow settled over all. I'm still looking for someone that might be researching the early Askew/Haskew family of Bertie... ca. 1700-1760 time frame. I have some notes, but would like to discuss my findings with someone else who may be able to either corroborate what I have or dismiss it. I have a John Askew/Haskew b. ca. 1740 (place unknown) who was a soldier in the Cherokee Expedition (F. & I. War) and ended up in Marlboro Co., SC with several other NC men he fought with and befriended during this time. He married Ruth Pearson, the daughter of one of the older men he met in the war from Wake Co., and they ended up in Marlboro Co., SC as well. I think this John Askew may have been from the Bertie group. I found (possible father) a John Askew b. ca. 1695 d, 1751, md. Margaret Elizabeth Boone. This John Askew appears to have been from the Nicholas Askew / Sarah Ogelthorpe line. (both born in the Isle of Wight, VA area. Nicholas Askew was b. ca. 1660-1675, died 1728. Nicholas Askew +Sarah Ogelthorpe John Askew + Margaret E. Boone John Askew/Haskew +Ruth Pearson John and Ruth Askew/Haskew had two sons.. The oldest, John , served in the Rev. War, and the history books say he almost didn't get his pension because of the spelling of his last name. An 'H' was either added or left off. Not sure. I would be glad to share my research into the possibility of the above lineage being correct. Joanne Harley New Bern, NC [email protected]

One of you has asked how wages compared to costs during WW2. The re-use of scrap metal is not new. During WW2 every child gathered scrap metal, especially iron, we savfed used grease and oil and any copper wire one could find was taken to the junk yard. I remember taking my wagon (full) of iron and gaining a flat-out 5 cents a lb. Copper brought 8 cents, if my memory serves me. We gathered old newspapers at 2.5 cents per lb. and picked strawberries to earn a little since the men were gone to war. We got 5 cents per quart for that labor, and the same for picking apples, pears, etc. Cheap - nah - just as it should have been. Milk was 10 cents per quart delivered to your house, ice for our icebox 1 cent per pound, gasoline was 25 cents a gallon or 5 gallons for $1.00. My Dad paid 400.00 in 1940 for a new Chevy coupe. Hamburgers at the common restaurants were 5 cents, and bread was usually 8 cents a loaf. For the wealthy (and who were few and far between where I was raised) green fees at the golf course 40 miles away were 1.50. I frequently rode the train to see my Gparents - 100 miles round trip - for 95 cents (no air conditioners there or anywhere else, of course). My mother and father bought a new electric mixer for 22.00 and paid for it at 50 cents a month for 45 months. Dad had a good job on the RR and earned a GOOD salary - 85.00 per month. Savings accounts paid 2% interest and to borrow money at the bank the interest was 3%. I sold papers when I was 10, collected from customers 18 cents per 6 day week for the daily, and was paid 3 cents per customer - had 100 customers = 3.00 per week. Till I was in college it was usurious (and enforced) for lenders such as loan companies to charge more than 10% interest, and dept. stores charged nothing or 1% on balances. On and on, since you asked if I yearn for those days??? ----- Original Message ----- From: Mike St. Clair/TT Sent: Monday, September 04, 2006 10:55 AM Subject: Petition on reduction in hours for National Archives In late July, the National Archives announced they were planning to cut back the hours of the Washington DC area facilities of the archives. This would eliminate all evening and Saturday hours and greatly harm the ability of the average genealogist to access the records. For full details, see http://www.archives.gov/press/press-releases/2006/nr06-125.html While the Archivist of the United States was at the FGS conference he reported that they had received very little feedback from the country's genealogists asking for reconsideration. He was also presented with a request from the chair of the FGS Records Preservation Committee to consider some alternatives and a petition was started to allow genealogists to express their disagreement with the changes and to endorse alternatives that will allow the evening and Saturday hours to continue. You can see more details about that in Dick Eastman's weekly newsletter at: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2006/09/quick_please_jo.html The petition can be signed at: http://www.petitiononline.com/FGS2006 I would encourage each of you, as board members of The USGenWeb Project to use your influence to publicize this information throughout the project. Note that the deadline for receiving comments on the proposed changes by the archives is September 9, so there isn't much time. And I suspect that if they succeed in reducing the Washington hours, the regional archives will be soon to follow. I appreciate all that each of you do in support of the project membership and all genealogists with US ancestry. I believe that a little effort in support of this effort by FGS will pay off long term in enhancing our ability to deliver free information to our clients - genealogists everywhere. Mike St. Clair
Be careful what perpetual calendar you use. All should remember that for anyone born before 1752 who died after that year, one must correct for the 12 days missing in 1752 - Sept. 2 to 14. That was the month and year that we abandoned Julian in favor of the Gregorian Calendar. Then too, until that year what we would call New Years Day was March 21, the 1st month of the year was March, and the last day of the year was the last day of February. Still though in our business dealings with Britain and with France, they had changed their calendars in 1652 and in 1732 respectively, as I recall (correct me if these years are inaccurate). So what? It makes a difference; Geo. Washington's Mom would have said and be correct in giving his birth date and year as Feb. 22, 1731, and not in 1732 as we now declare it to have been. Once again, the only significant effect of the change was in the payment of taxes due, the economics of their day, and in such as log books and account ledgers. Please help me pass the word around about this event! Any surname or county list that you think would be interested -- please forward it. We all know Sally's work with Bertie -- so let's support her as well as Dr. Speller. "A Visit with Genealogist Sally Moore Koester at Hope Plantation" The public is invited by Dr. Benjamin F. Speller, Jr., President of the Historic Hope Foundation, to join him in a conversation with Genealogist Sally Moore Koestler at the Roanoke Chowan Heritage Center, September 13, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. Mrs. Koestler is known far and wide for her website: http://www.sallysfamilyplace.com This website is extremely significant because Sally's documentation is helpful for genealogical research on families of African, European, and Native American descent in Bertie County and eastern North Carolina. Sally's childhood home is Maple Lawn in Hertford County, North Carolina, the ancestral home of the Jones and Moores since 1759; so, she is definitely at home. This is my working hypothesis - the way I see it as of this moment!!
