I'm wondering if this Hoggard cemetary might be part of the Arthur and Bertha Hoggard family. They had 15 or 16 children. Bertha was my father's sister and her maiden name was Bertha Bryant. My father was John Raleigh Bryant, born in Elm Grove to Drusilla and John Thomas Bryant. Rev. John R. Bryant, Jr. Green Bay, WI.

I descend from an Exum Smith born 1823 of Wayne Co. NC, died Union Co. NC in 1900 also known as John Exum Smith. At age 13 he, as Exum Smith, was bound in Wayne Co. NC Court to Elisha Sasser husband of Esther Smith, daughter of Cullen Smith. These folks migrated to Anson Co. NC in now Union Co. NC. Parents of my Exum Smith also called John Exum Smith have not been found. I suspect there could be a connection to descendants of Benjamin and Tabitha Exum Smith. An Exum Smyth bought land from John Pickering on 4 Feb 1800 in Wayne Co. NC. A William Smith was a witness. Exum Smith sold this land on 28 Dec 1802 to John Parker. Witnesses were Alexander Smith and Nancy Smith. An Exum Smith, Benaja Herring, William Herring, Henry Sasser, Jacob Hering and Arthur Sasser were charged on 4 Oct 1823 with forcible entry and detaining - Wayne Co. NC Court. Exum Smith estate records appear in Oct., Aug., Nov 1823 & Spring term of Wayne Co. NC court records. No indication of wife, children or other relatives. No indication of cause of death. Next there is the following marriage bond: Groom: Smith, Exum Bride: Deloach, Betsey Marriage Bond Date: 6 Sep 1813 Record #: 071 01 181 Bond #: 000091965 Bondsman: Jesse Smith Northampton Co. NC This Exum Smith appears in the 1820 & 1830 Northampton Co. NC census records. Use of the Exum Smith name may indicate some family connections.
What time frame are we talking about and I will see what I can find out. Names of places change from time to time. There was another place called just White Oak that is on the other side of the county from this road... If you will give me some other info maybe I can find out more for you.. There has been a lot of discussion on the VA library site (and questions to me) concerning "binding out" and "being apprenticed". It is likely of interest to all. Here are a few of those comments. Brogsden who served in the Civil War was another son, Evander. I've found his name (Evander Brogdon) in the SC Military Records. The LDS record I mentioned says that William was born in 1830 (not 1834 as previously stated) and died in 1864. I do not know where the record came from, but that is why I thought he could have died in the War. I appreciate your interest.

The book Ancestral Key to the Pee Dee by Betha has an entry, a John Brogdon son William b ca 1830 but no further information about William. Some of the William sibling names include Martha, Elizabeth,Edward,Ann, Rebecca. The E. Brogsden listed in the Sellers Civil War section maybe Edward. Edward served in Company L,10th regiment, SC Volunteers, Confederate States Provisional Army. Good luck.

On LDS Family Search there is a William Brogdon, b. 1834, in Marion, SC. I believe these 2 Williams are the same. I don't know what happened to William after the 1850 census. Could he be the one from NC? One William served in the Civil War 20th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry but I don't know if this was him. There are so many William Brogdons--it's so confusing.
