    1. Re: [NCBERTIE] 1787 State Census?
    2. Francie Lane
    3. Hi Will, I checked the index for the 1787 NC State Census for your Blunt Cooper (or anything similar) and there's nothing contained in the published records. Although Bertie's census is available, many counties have been lost. NC passed legislation in 1784 for a state-wide census to be taken. The heads of the household are named and family members are enumerated under the following categories: White Male, aged 21-60 White Male, aged under 21 and above 60 All White Females Blacks, aged 12-50 Blacks, aged under 12 and over 50 The book is available for purchase through Amazon.com or if you have a subscription to Ancestry.com, the book is on-line: State Census of North Carolina, 1784-1787 About this book Source: Original data: Register, Alvaretta K. State Census of North Carolina, 1784-1787. Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2001. Description: Compiled from original records in the North Carolina Department of Archives and History, this work lists 14,000 heads of households and provides an enumeration of individuals in each household by age, sex, and race. In addition, individuals named are listed under a reference to the original census page, thus furnishing the researcher with a key to the manuscript records. Based on a special state enumeration, this 1784-87 census names many individuals who had left North Carolina by the time of the first federal census of 1790. The Counties listed are: State Census of North Carolia 1784-1787 Bertie County Burke County Camden County Carteret County Caswell County Chowan County Duplin County Gates County Halifax County Hyde County Johnston County Martin County Montgomery County New Hanover County Northampton County Onslow County Pasquotank County Perquimans County Pitt County Richmond County Sullivan County Surry County Tyrrell County Warren County Wilkes County

    2. The State of North Carolina conducted a census (possibly based on the tax records) in 1786 and 1787. It is in book form at most major libraries. THIS WAS A STATE CENSUS! In 1790 the FEDERAL Census was first taken and have been conducted every 10 year since then. Some States have conducted special censuses from time to time. James

    1. [NCBERTIE] 1787 State Census?
    2. I wasn't aware of a state census earlier than the 1790 federal census. How complete? How do I gain access to it? My ancestor, Blunt Cooper appears on 1790 and 1800 federal census. I know he was in the county at least as early as 1795. Will Cooper

    1. [NCBERTIE] Samuel Rasco 1787 State Census of Bertie County N.C.
    2. There is a Samuel Rasco listed in the 1787 State Census of Bertie County, North Carolina. Also listed are the households of Thomas and James Rasco in the same Dristrict. Another Household in another Dristrict of Bertie County enumerated the household of Arthur Rasco. Although Arthur, Thomas, and James together with the Household of William Rasco appears in the 1790 Federal Census of Bertie County, No listing for a Samuel Rasco appears in the 1790 or later censuses of Bertie County. Who was Samuel Rasco? What became of him after the 1787 State Census was taken? What was Samuel Rasco's relationship to the other Rasco families in Bertie County? James R. Rasco

    2. My Lawrence relatives were in the Merry Hill area. My grandfather was David Perry Lawrence and my Grandmother was Arrie Victoria Lawrence. My mother was Alice Lawrence (Allie) and my father was John Raleigh Bryant Sr. I had a number of relatives in the area, but I believe the last one that was alive was Rev. Glen Lawrence who died about 3 years ago. There are other distant Lawrence relatives in the area, but since I have not lived in that area for 50 years I don't know who they are. 3. Bryant: I'm sure that we are related, although a bit distantly. My Lawrence ancestor Robert and his son Humphrey Lawrence lived in the Cashoke Creek/Cashie River area before the Revolutionary War. Humphrey's son Nathaniel left Bertie County for Charleston S.C. with older relations (Thomas Ashley, I believe) shortly after the war. I'm attaching a paper I prepared discussing the locations in Bertie County where my people lived. I prepared this last September after I visited Bertie and did some research. All of this is quite close to Merry Hill and, in fact, I stopped at the old store there and asked for directions. 3. Hello Janet & All, I descend from Christopher Hollyman and Margaret Byrd Hollyman thru their grandson/ggrandson, William Holloman, who was b ca 1775 in Hertford Co. I am missing one or two generations of his Hollyman given name/s. Wm HOLLOMAN was the son of Jemima KING HOLLOMAN who was the dau of Charles KING and Judith WIMBERLY KING of Bertie near/at Loosing Swamp. Wm HOLLOMAN had a sister, Judith HOLLOMAN , who married Ryan O. JERNIGAN in Bertie Co. Wm HOLLOMAN married Nancy BAKER HOLLOMAN (the dau of James BAKER of Hertford Co.) in ca 1800. Thier first two children, Mary & Samuel, were born in Hertford Co. In 1804, Wm & Nancy BAKER HOLLOMAN left Hertford Co., NC for Kentucky where they remained until death. I would sooooo very appreciate ANY info anyone may have on these related families...it is certainly quite a puzzzle! If anything at all rings a bell please let me know as I have been getting nowhere fast for a very long time! Thanks so much.
