Does anyone have any information on Willis Nichols, brother of Nathaniel Nichols? Here is some information that was provided to me, but not proved by documents. Thomas's Will is also given in issue #14,p 10. Will of Thomas Cherry ccc477 Bertie Co.NC dated 9/28/1812 and transcribed by George W. Cherry, Hamilton, VA. (George and Sue visited in 1993 while on their way to Ala). Thomas' will names his wife Rachel Outlaw and six children. At one time Aaron #3663 was listed as the father of Aaron Cherry #132 [ccc1320]. Data review shows he was not. Thomas #6200 had a son named Aaron Cherry #8727 [1403]. Here is a review of the Aarons' I have on file. (1) Aaron #132 [ccc132]) was the son of Thomas Cherry #642 [no CCC #], from data found in a manuscript written by cousin Edna Cook. Need to find more about Aaron son of Thomas [477] of Bertie Co Records give an Aaron Cherry that married Elizabeth Harmon in Bertie Co, NC.in 1850, he was single (age 54) living four doors from Mrs Elizabeth Cherry (age 63) and the James Dures family (age 66) with whom Elizabeth was living. In 1840 this same Elisabeth was living between William J Cherry [ ] and Theophilus Cherry [ ]. Aaron was sill unmarried living close to his brother James Cherry. Aaron #8827 married Elizabeth Harmon in Bertie Co on Nov. 4, 1952. In 1860 Aaron and his family were living three doors from his younger brother Thomas Cherry in 1860 Aaron and Elizabeth had three daughters, all born in Snakebite Township in Bertie. In an article by Francis Speight to the Bertie County Historical association he gave the location of Aaron Cherry property (near SR 308) as one-mile toward Republican on the left side. Court records show that Theophilus was married when he was 65 years of age. There were three surviving issues to his marriage to Elizabeth Outlaw per records of those buried in their father's cemetery. Also information stated that Theophilus wife's full name was Christianna Eliza Outlaw. The Theophilus Cherry Cemetery is located on a farm now owned by Rhodes Bond on SR 308 approximately a mile west past the entrance to Hope Plantation. The cemetery is located in the center of a field and is surrounded by an iron fence with the CHERRY name on the gate per info by Virginia Crillery sent 11-30-2000 from author unknown at this time. Recorded in NC LDS on page #4,728 Theophilus Cherry was given as a male that was born 1800 and married to Kida Elizup Outlaw 17 Mar 1865. In an article written by Francis Speight dated April 1963 that was presented to the Bertie Co Historical Association is found the following information regarding the Theophilus Cherry House. The plantation was called Buckfield and was built in the Snakebite Township. Located on the south side of SR 308 one-mile east of the William King House Road. After Theophilus death William Spivey Pritchard later lived in the house. Mr Pritchard was Bertie Co. Register of Deeds for several years. The Buckfield house was built during the late 18th or early 19th century and at one time considered one of the best in the township. Mr J. Clarks later owned the property in the early 1800's. It is shown as the Clark Place on a North Carolina Map drawn in 1808. Theophilus Cherry was my (Pete #1) 3rd cousin five time removed with John Cherry the immigrant from Norfolk Co VA as our common ancestor. John Cherry was my 7th great grandfather. He married Christiana Elizabeth "Ellzur" Outlaw #8834, married 03-17-1865 in Bertie Co.NC, (daughter of Alexander Outlaw #21803 and Christine (Wife Alexander Outlaw) #21804). Christianna: The name Eliza Cherry Pounet is found on her grave stone in the Theophilus Cherry Cemetery. After the death of her husband Theophilus Cherry it appears she married second a Mr Pounet per the name listed on the tombstone. No proof. It is probable that her name was Christiania Elizabeth Outland and she went by the nickname Kida Ellzur. 1. William: Operated a dime store on Main Street in Kelford until it closed after the depression in the 30s. I remember the going out of business sale they held to dispose of the inventory. Once when a band of gypsies pounced on the town Mr. Tyler had several of the local kids follow them throughout the store and report if they tried to steal anything. It was quite common to have a band of Gypsies start at one end of the town and dart into the stores as they progressed from north to south. We were warned that gypsies stole young children and sold them later. Luck for Kelford we never lost anyone from their visits. Most people probably dont even know that they are there. Once in awhile if you will look directly across the road from the church you will see a utility pole and in the high weeds around it are a few grave stones I have happened to glimpse when I was in the area. IF there is a graveyard there it has been long forgotten. Now you have my interest up as well...
