    3. Well, Patricia, I would bet your family knows my husband's. His mother is Audrey Jane Carpenter, d/o Judie Tolley and Mack Leonard Carpenter, granddaughter of Betty Jane Carpenter and James Dunlop Baird. This particular James Dunlop was married to a Louisa Dickens. His sister was Elizabeth "Lizzie" Baird who married Marcus Brownlow Hughes. She and James Dunlop were children of Mary Louise Dickens and James Dunlop Baird from Person Cty. I understand he was a professor at Sydney Hampton college in VA. Most of this family is buried in the Daniels Cemetery in Avery County. The first James Dunlop was the son of Nathaniel Harrison Baird of VA (the plantation Bairds). Betty Jane Carpenter's father was Ervin b 1843-44 in Yancey (now Avery, I believe) Cty. I cannot find that rascal anyplace! He was the son of David William Carpenter and Mira Gragg. I have lots of information until I get down to Ervin and his daughter, Betty Jane. Jack, my husband, says he asked his grandfather about his parents once and Mack told him there were some things he did not need to know and would not want to know. DARN! The photo I have a Betty Jane looks quite a bit Indian but then you know it was not the first. Through the Bairds, Jack goes back to the Bollings and Rolfes, and Pocohontas. I have been doing this for my family and his for two years and I LOVE it. I almost feel I know these people I track down. Jack was born in Linville Falls and his mother is from Newland.
