John B. Palmer Greetings folks! I am looking for information on John B. Palmer. He was born in Clinton, New York, c.1825. He live in Michigan in the early 1850s, and then in Watauga (later Mitchell, now Avery) County, North Carolina, in 1858. His wife was named Fannie, son, Elmer, daughter Lotta, and possibly a adopted daughter, Jodia. He was 6 foot tall. In 1860, he helped form Mitchell County, North Carolina. In 1861, Palmer joined the Confederate Army, rising to the rank of Colonel, 58th North Carolina Troops, and departmental commander of Western North Carolina. His home "Grasslands" was burned in 1864 by George W. Kirk. His death remains a mystery. One source says that he never returned to the area, and another source says that he was killed in the Cranberry section of what is now Avery County. He is dead by 1889 when his widow sells the property in Mitchell (Avery) County. Does anyone have any other information on John B. Palmer? Dates of birth/death, place of burial, etc.. I have much more information that I can share. Thanks, Michael C.
