He enlisted in Company E, 37th NCT, on September 18, 1861. Wounded at the battle of Second Manassas on August 27, 1862. Reported absent wounded or absent without leave through October 1863. Returned to duty in November-December 1863. Wounded in the right leg at or near Jericho mills, Virginia, May 23, 1864. Returned to duty in September-October 1864. Present or accounted fort through February 1865. Applied for and received a pension after the war. Died on March 16, 1904, and is buried in the Love Cemetery (290) in Watauga County. Eggers, Joel Born c. 1811. Parents ?? Spouse: Sarah Wilson married in 1830. Children: Adam, Alexander, Riley, Mary, Joel, and Noah. Occupation: Farmer. Service: Co. B, 11th Battalion North Carolina Home Guard. Calaway (Calloway), William Henderson born: August 27, 1845 Parents: James Calloway and Nancy Spouse: Mirah Children: Harison C., Louiza, Grant, and Sherman Military service: Enlisted in Watauga County at age 16 on June 27, 1862, for the war, in Company M, 58th NCT. Reported present in Janaury - April 1863. Deserted on June 5, 1863. Later served as a private in Company F, 3rd Regiment Tennessee Cavalry (US). Applied for and receive US Army pension after the war. Benfield, Joseph L. Born: July 2, 1831, in Burke County. Parents: Joseph S. Benfield and Eleaner "Nelly" Johnson. Spouse: Mary Lousie Teams. Children: William W., Martha E., Lillian, James., Joseph P., Ellen J., Robert P., Eugenia, and Thomas B. Occupation: Farmer, Minister. Military service: enlisted in Company B, 37th North Carolina Troops on September 14, 1861. Wounded in action in the forearm at Cedar Mountain, Virginia, on August 9, 1862. Returned to duty in January-February 1863. Deserted on July 22, 1863. Reported present but under sentence of court martial September - December 1863. Deserted to the enemy on or about February 16, 1865. Released on unknown date after taking the oath. (He had seven brothers who served in the war..) Died on August 17, 1893. Buried in the Benfield Cemetery, Buck Hill, Avery County, North Carolina. Franklin, Isaac Sorry, I don't have any information on him. Was he from the southern part of what is now Avery County, or the Northern part?
