Hi Everyone, S Donaldson has contributed four cemetery surveys for Avery County: Montezuma Cemetery Newland Cemetery Pineola Cemetery Yellow Mountain Cemetery These surveys list the gravestones that have been erected since 1975, when Martha A. Pyatte published "Lest We Forget", An Index to Avery County Cemeteries. These new listings can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/avery.htm Files at that site are in the required text format, and are somewhat hard to read. You will be able to read them easier at these URLs: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/avery/montezuma.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/avery/newland.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/avery/pineola.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/avery/ymc.htm As previously mentioned on 27 November, the Avery County NCGenWeb page has photographs of some gravestones: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncavery/photos/cemeteries/headston.htm At the Crossnore Johnson Cemetery, one of the gravestones has a picture of a woman, but there is no visible information. Does anyone know who this might be? There are also two gravestones for an Unknown Cemetery. Can anyone identify that cemetery? Mike
The Baird family, in this case, was from VA. Nathaniel Harrison Baird>James Dunlop Baird>James Dunlop Baird>Mack Leonard Carpenter. Nathaniel was a big land owner in Person Cty, NC and the first James Dunlop Baird married Mary Louise Dickens in Person Cty. I believe they are buried in Avery Cty though and he was possibly a professor at Sydney-Hampton College in VA. The second James Dunlop born in 1870 died in 1954 in Hughes, Avery Cty, NC. I believe he married a Louisa Dickens who died before 1911. I know there were Bairds in Watauga Cty ie Delilah Baird who had chidren by a Holtzclaw that was married to Fanny Calloway. thank you, all~
My mother-in-law is Audrey Jane CARPENTER Franklin. Her father was Mack Leonard CARPENTER son of Betty Jane CARPENTER and James Dunlop BAIRD. Audrey assures me that a sister of Betty Jane's had a store in Hughes. Does anyone know who this could be? She probably was married. I would like to find any descendants of hers. What I am really trying to determine is where Ervin Carpenter b about 1843 in Yancey Cty and son of David William CARPENTER and Mira GRAGG died and when he died. Also, I would like to find out who he married. There is some indication his wife may have been native American. I have no information on Betty Jane CARPENTER as to dates or places but I know James Dunlop BAIRD died in Hughes. Their son, Mack Leonard CARPENTER was born May 8, 1898 also in Hughes when it was still Mitchell Cty. He married Judie Carolyn TOLLEY. I would really appreciate any help. Audrey Annable Franklin
Thank you ever so much. Audrey. My laugh for the day - I can always find one it seems. Can someone tell me if Hughes is in Mitchell Cty or Avery? If it is Avery - was it ever in Mitchell? Hi Everybody, S. Donaldson has contributed some very nice gravestone pictures of his Avery County ancestry. I am in the process of getting them all posted, but thought you might like to see how they look so far: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncavery/photos/cemeteries/headston.htm You may also click on Avery County Photos from the Main Page. Mike
Here is a neat website I ran across with info on county resources and links. It looks like it is still being worked on but looks pretty good so far. Just thought I would pass it along. www.segenealogy.com
Hi Everyone, Steve Peters has contributed some excellent biographical material concerning his ancestor Barnabas (Barney) B. Calhoun: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/avery.htm This is a super way to share information that you have about your ancestry, and everyone is invited to join in. Mike
Would like to know if any one out there know of any of this family? A Matilda (Tilda) Pendley b. 1824 in Burke County (probably Caldwell Co. now) had three children that I have found so far. Christina Pendley b. 1841, Ann Pendley b.1845, Issac Trimmin (Trim) Pendley 10-9-1846. I found this group in the 1850 Caldwell Co. census. The Mother (Tilda Pendley) later married Dec.20, 1951, Willey Gaither Pritchard/Pritchett. The son (Trim) lived and owned land on Plum Branch in Avery County, He married Mary (Polly) Burleson daughter of Russell Burleson. They had many children: Charlotte(Lottie)Pendley married, Burgin Burleson, other children are: Dud, Grover, Mandy, McCoy, Willard, Martha, Lurana, Elwen, Melinda (Mindy), Alva, Olive, and Maude. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joyce Comer
Hi Everyone, Most of us have found that as a group, genealogy hobbyists are the friendliest, most eager to help group that you will ever find. In our zeal to help, we must also keep in mind the effect of our actions. This morning, a 581 KB GEDCOM was sent to all recipients of this mail list. This was not the proper procedure for sharing genealogical information with others. If you have information that you would like to share, please make an announcement of what you have, the size of the file, and offer it to everyone on a personal, by request basis. This will let those who desire the information receive it, and not burden the In-box of those who do not have an interest. Thank you for your cooperation. Mike NCAvery List Owner
Can anyone help S. Riebe? If so, please reply directly to: PD4BYDAD@aol.com From: PD4BYDAD@aol.com Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 11:56:32 EDT Subject: Thomas To: javan@paonline.com Dear Sir: I am trying to do research on the Thomas and Brown families who lived in Avery County (Cranberry). These are my mother's relatives and I can not find anything on them, however, I know they lived in Cranberry because I use to visit some of them. Can you help me? My grandfather was Rev. John Clayton Brown, pastor of Cranberry Baptist Church and a circuit rider, he married Edith Thomas and they raised 9 children. My Great Grandfather was William Brown who married Mary Jane Ollis. My grandmother's father was Mose Thomas who married Lottie Pritchard. Mose' father was Jacob Thomas who married Margaret "Peggy" Mckinney. I would appreciate any information or ideas, as I am drawing a blank with this. S. Riebe
