Hi Everyone, Graphic images of the 1920 Avery County Federal Census have been posted in the Avery County Digital Library. You may access these images- From the Avery County Digital Library Table of Contents: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/avery.htm Or from the Census Page, which lists the images for each township: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/avery/census/1920/census.htm Or you may go directly to the census images: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/avery/census/1920/ These are fairly large graphic files, so depending upon your connection speed, the download could take a while. Please be patient. I tried to make the images as small as possible, but still keep them readable. There is not an index of names for these images. If there are list members who would like to join a cooperative effort in making an index, you may contact me. If you have any questions or problems, please let me know. Mike

Can anyone help Willie? ======= From: "CHERYL & WILLIAM OAKES" <wgoakes@comsys.net> To: <javan@paonline.com> Subject: Oakes Mike, my name is William G. Oakes. A few month ago we visited Crossnore in search of the Willie Oakes cemetery. After the second attempt we found it. We had been told that the official name was the Franklin cemetery. We finally found a man who knew it as the Willie Oakes cemetery. Our quest was to may be find information on my grandfather Cordell Oakes. We found who we believed to be his father, William A. Oakes. Also in the cemetery was a tombstone for a year old by the name of Donald Ernest Oakes, listing his parents as Cordell and N. Oakes. Would it be possible for you to provide more information on these people? I really feel I am on the right track but I am having trouble finding anything on Cordell. Any help appreciated, Willie
Hi , is it on the Roan Creek Mountains Road? I know one place that there is cemetery above the road, I could not get my car up there I would park my car on the road and walk up there. Both of my parents sides are buried there (Hughes, Lusks, Buchanuan -spelling?, Wises) My mom s parents live up on the end of the road of Roan Creek road (very end of the road) along the Hughes clans on the way. My grandpa (Carmen Hughes) was 97 when he passed away last year, but Harriet Hughes (my grandma) is still alive. I go to the mountains every summer. My family lived in Lexington due to the jobs (DOT) helping building I-85, I-52, hwy 49 (filling up all roads almost all over Davidson County). The rest of my family still live in Avery County and Mitchell County (Spruce Pine area). Do you know any Hughes and Lusks??? Right now I am living in Morganton. Brenda Lusk Blevins
Posted on: Avery Co. NC Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Avery?read=333 Surname: Laws ------------------------- My husband just walked through the woods looking for that cemetery at Heaton, in Avery Co. last weekend. He found one stone with SMITH - Rosa T. b. 27 May 1888 d. 20 Sept. 1960 & Charlie A. b. 4 May 1884 d. 12 Jan. 1958, but he said there were so many briars that unless you knew where it was, it is going to be hard to find. We are looking for his ggrandmas dad, Billy Laws grave. There is a big Heaton Cemetery up past the Heaton Church about 1/4 mile, but it isn't hard to find. If we have any luck in the near future finding the cemetery above the road, I will post it. Diana Trivett

Sharon, This is really mind-bogglin There are so many simularities in our family and us never knowing each other. (1) We lived in Adrian and Morenci Michigan from 1948 till 1952-53 had no idea some of Mothers relatives were next door. I now can remember Mother saying, (when I was inquiring about this Andrew) he left S.P. and no one ever heard from him again. this explains it, I just can't wait to tell her, she is 84 years old and spry as a spring chicken. (2) I named my daughter Melinda, my son Christopher, just so many of these names fall right back into the family. (3) I also have a host of relatives buried at the Lyons Cemetery (mostly HALLS) my Dads side. (4) I still have some relatives living in Toledo, Ohio. A Bea Onstead (don't remember what her husbands last name was.) and some Halls. I'll send you another family or two today. I would love to have a copy of that picture. My address: Joyce Comer 428 Los Corner Rd. Morganton, N.C. (this is still very near Spruce Pine, 40 miles) and I was raised in S.P.) 28655 828-433-0938 Sharon Lawson wrote: > Posted on: Avery Co.
