NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Avery/448 Surname: Wiseman, Taylor ------------------------- Donna, I thought I had sent you this info but apparently not. James Taylor b. Oct 19, 1827 m. Cynthia Elizabeth Wiseman abt 1850. Avery County Heritage books say Cynthia was b. November 3, 1833 but Tom Chapman's book says August 30, 1833. They had 8 Children, one was Martin Delafayette Taylor; Martin married Thompsine Augusta Wiseman on March 27, 1877. So it's James' daughter-in-law that was called Tompsie, not his wife. James and "Cintha E" are on the 1860 Census for Yancey County: 1860 Census, Yancey County, NC: James Taylor 56 M NC (the age is incorrect) Cintha E 25 F NC Jackson 8 M NC Martin D 5 M NC Sophia L 3 F NC and on the 1850 Census I *think* James is living with Martin Davenport and Elizabeth Carpenter Wiseman. There is a James Taylor, age 36 living with that family. Cynthia Elizabeth Wiseman, who married James, is Martin's sister. This family is in the 1850 Census for Yancey County NC roll 649 p 423. I don't know much about Hugh, but this might be his family from the 1850 Census for Burke County, roll 522, p 380: 1850 Census, Burke County, NC roll 622 p 380 Hugh Taylor 50 M NC Emaline 42 F NC James 18 M NC John 15 M NC Elizabeth 14 F NC Eliza 12 F NC Jack 10 M NC Mack White? 8 M NC Adeline 6 F NC Zachary 4 M NC Leslie

But we beleive Cordell was dead before Nannie moved to St Paul where she lived with my Aunt Viginia. Any help appreciated.

    2. William Goodge
    3. Posted on: Avery Co. NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Avery/445 Surname: Hughes ------------------------- Rhonda, Jerimiah ‘Jerry’ Hughes settled the area around Valley, NC in the early 1800’s. He would have been my 2nd great grandfather. Your Great grandfather would have been related in some way to Jerry Hughes. I looked in the 1970 and 1980 census for Mitchell County, NC for Joseph Hughes and the only one I could find was in the 1970 census. This Joseph was a son of Mark Hughs. The name was probably different because of the census taker. This Joseph was 6 years old in this census. Mark Hughs was 45 years old in the 1970 census. Jerry Hughs was 60 years old in that census. >From this age difference I don’t think this Mark Hughs was a son of Jerry – maybe he was a brother. In the 1980 census Mark Hughs was listed but there wasn’t a Joseph in the family. It looks like there was a ‘Buck’ as a son that would have been about the same age as Joseph, so it could be he was going by a nickname. All these people were listed living in the Toe River Township, which Valley was a part of. There was a Zora Green that was a great granddaughter of Jerry Hughes who lived in that area. She did a lot of local and family history on the Hughes. I don’t think she is still alive but maybe her children are carrying on her work. She lived in Valley. I hope some of this has been helpful to you. Bill Goodge bill_Goodge@attglobal.net

    3. Let's see: I have David died in 1889 in Graham Cty, NC. I would LOVE a copy of the photo of Mira Gragg Carpenter but I have no fax machine :o( I also found them on those censuses but mostly through indexes so I haven't complete information except for 1850 and 1860. The first children were from a first wife that no one knows the name of (poor thing!). She married David about 1830 and had William Nov 8, 1830; Thomas D. 1839 d 1862 in Grahamville SC in the Civil War; Wilson 1835; Levi 1837. I did not know about the girls. He married Mira in about 1840 in Yancey Cty and their first child was James Pinkney in 1841 followed as you say by Sarah 1843, Ervin 1843-44 (Family says it was Ervin not Erwin and 1850 census has Ervin); Jonathan, Mary Jane, Dollie Marie, (I didn't have Donna except in notes and did not know where she fit in), Rachel Matilda March 6, 1853; Samuel Oct. 1, 1855; David April 1858, Frances Caroline June 4, 1860. All were born in Yancey Cty. Martha was born June 10, 1864 in Cherokee Cty. There was an Erwin Carpenter also born in Yancey Cty in about 1845. He was the son of Samuel (brother of David William) and Frances Vaughn. Caused me no end of grief to figure that out. 3. My husband is also a descendant of David William Carpenter and Mira Gragg through their son, Ervin. He is the one that is such an enigma. Cannot find out who he married but I know he had a daughter named Betty Jane Carpenter and a son named Todd. Sophia was born 1810 in Burke (now Avery) Cty and died 1889 in McDowell Cty, NC. She married in 1830 in Yancey Cty to Gabriel English b 1809 in Burke and died 1890 in McDowell. If anyone has information and dates for David and for, especially, Ervin, I would appreciate it. I know David and the family went to Cherokee Cty, NC.
