    3. Posted on: Avery Co. NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Avery/460 Surname: WITT, TAYLOR, OLLIS, BUCHANAN ------------------------- Hello, I'am seeking a Luther (Luthern) TAYLOR who was from NC. born late 1800's.Luther's said wife was Sarah B. WITT. They bore a son Benjamin Lloyd TAYLOR(my grandfather) he was born 1915 in Cranberry Twp.Avery county NC.Sarah WITT was from VA. she was born 1897, the daughter of William WITT and Nancy OLLIS.This family line connects to BUCHANAN, OLLIS,and FOX.I was told by my father that Benjamin TAYLOR was a bastard and that Sarah did not know the father of Benjamin.I would hope this wasn't true.Sarah and Benjamin later turned up in Indiana,PA.Bedford,Blacklick,Blairsville.,Sarah met a man Tom CARNEY (KEARNEY)this man was step father to Benjamin TAYLOR.Some in family say that Ben's father died when he was just a little boy.So with my research I figure his father died around 1900-1915 as Benjamin is in the 1920 census of Avery,NC. 1915 making him 5 years old.So if any one having information on any of this line I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

    3. Posted on: Avery Co. NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Avery/456 Surname: Taylor ------------------------- Donna, I am sure your date for James is more accurate than anything I have. I have no concrete info for Hugh and only suspect (family lore) info for James. What I find strange is Hugh born 1796 and James not until 1827. They must be the oldest and youngest (or close to it) of a lot of children. In Avery County Heritage, Vol I, p. 196, Cozie says: The father of Hugh Taylor and James Taylor must have come from Boston. He received a land grant for services in the Revolutionary War. His original grant was in what is now South Carolina. In the family history of the Taylors, his given name is not listed. However, he is described as a commissioned officer of the Revolution who was given a tract of land in Carolina for his distinguised service and is credited with owning a large estate and many slaves. One of his sons moved to Indiana. That's not conclusive, of course, it's just what she remembered at the time she was writing the bit for the Heritage book.

    3. Posted on: Avery Co. NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Avery/453 Surname: Taylor, Wiseman ------------------------- Hi Leslie: Thank you for your message. I have not received this information before. Thanks again. Something I doesn't understand is the date that you have on Hugh Taylor. I have him down as being borne in 1796. You have him born in 1824 or something to that effect. Hugh had a illegimate son in 1832. I hardly think that he could have fathered a son at the age of 1832. What do you think about that. I am very interested in why the Taylor brothers left their father in South Carolina. According to Cozie Taylor, Martin Dooley Taylor was a very good fininical condition. Some writings of Cozie's stated that Martin Dooley Taylor had a large plantation with many slaves. Why would someone leave all of that and start out on their own? Do you have any thoughts on that? Or could it be as James and Hugh didn't get along; that may be the same situation with their father. Thanks for your help, Donna C.(WV)

NC Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Avery/451 Surname: Hughes, Green ------------------------- I am happy to say that you are wrong in your statement. I am Zora Green's (Jerry Hughes's great granddaughter) neighbor and I am happy to say that she is still alive and will be celebrating her 93rd birthday tomorrow (01/15/01). Unfortunately, I haven't ever had the chance to interview her on the subject, but I have recently become interested in the subject of my own geneology. I am a great grandson three times removed of Jerry Hughes, also decended on his son Mark's line. My lineage back to Jerry Hughes is well known, but nobody seems to know anything about where he came from or his parentage. The Avery County history books even seem to give conflicting information from volume to volume. Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Teddy Hughes thughes@m-y.net
