    1. [NCAvery] Re: Ray family information
    2. Janie, here's you a little info. Hope it helps. This is from the Ashe CO., NC census. 20. Larkin Ray(3) (William (2) Jesse (1) was born October 04, 1819 in prob. Watauga Co., NC, and d.January 07, 1898 in Watauga CO., NC. He married Mary Forrester Abt. 1856 daughter of William Forrester and Nancy? Children of Larkin Ray and Mary Forrester: i.Elizabeth Ray,b. 1857, d. est. 1858-1956 ii. Arthur William Ray, B, September23, 1864, d. 1946 (My Grandfather.) iii. Marry "Polly" Ann Ray b. 1866, d. Est. 1867-1960 iv. Thomas J Ray, b. July 20, 1872, Bald Mt., Watauga CO. NC, d. Est.1903-1963. (This was Jack's father.) v.John Randolph Ray,b. March 13, 1876, d. January 03,1955. vi.Joseph T Ray, b. August 19, 1878, d.1968. vii.Lillie Mae Ray, b. April 1895, d. Est. 1896-1989. I am working in the dark with just the computer light on the papers I'm copying this from so didn't list where these people were born, but I think they were all born in Watauga CO. I went to see Jack just before he died in St, Joseph's Hospital in Asheville, NC. He seemed to be doing well and talked a good bit, but a few days later I heard that he had died. I knew him real well since he had always lived in Newland, NC where I was born and raised. Dan used to stay at our house for several days at a time. I think he and Frances didn't click all the time. I knew the girls, but knew Bates better. Frances died when she was visiting a sister. She got sick suddenly, as I heard, and lived but a short time with Pancreatitis I think. You may know that Jack, like Uncle Tom had a law degree, but would never practice. Uncle Tom might nothave had a degree, but did a lot of legal work for people. He always lived in Newland also, and had a beautiful home. He lived across the street from Grandpa Ray, his brother. I don't know what ever happened to Jacks children. The last I heard from Dan he was going to TX or CA. I can't remember which. Well this has turned out to be pretty lengthy after all. Just hope it will help you some. Best wishes. Mimi Lathan

    2. Was Martha Patsanna Oaks (1823-1905) the daughter of Lodawick and Milly Oaks? Martha Patsanna Oaks was married to Col. John Milton English (1820-1893) and the 1870 census shows Lodawick Oaks, age 93 and Milly, age 75 living in the English home. Is there a relationship between the above Martha Patsanna Oaks and Rachel Oaks who married Henry English, Sr. (1773-1857) in Yellow Mountain?

    1. [NCAvery] Lest We Forget
    2. Javan Michael DeLoach
    3. Hi Everyone, The book, Lest We Forget, is a survey of the cemeteries in Avery County that was compiled by Martha A. Pyatte in 1975. This book is normally available from the Avery County Museum, but the existing stock has been sold out for nearly a year. Plans are being developed to republish the book, but it is not yet known when a new edition will be available. For a one week period, ending 7 July 2001, I will do lookups in the book. Please send your query directly to me, not the Mail List. Please specify the name(s) of the deceased, no blanket lookups for a surname will be made. Mike
