    2. Dear Crystal, My understanding is that Wilkes was parent county for Ashe County and other counties, so you look for records there if it concerned 1799 or before. I found a handful of Maxwells on the land tax lists in the 1790s. It is organized by military districts, it seems. I am at work away from my files, so I don't remember exactly. A man's name was the head of each district, and he had a title like Captain or Lt. I believe I found these in a book at the Salt Lake City library, and it had maps of land holdings along the creeks and rivers. Just having a map was helpful for placing these people. Margie
