    3. Any of you MAXWELL researchers have any info on the parents of Nancy MAXWELL who married, about 1818, William J ASHLEY? Wilkes County was formed from Surry Co in 1778, and Surry Co from Rowan in 1771. Some records of people living in what is now Wilkes/Ashe will be found in Surry and Rowan County. Officially there were not supposed to be any white people in what is now Ashe/Watauga until 1776 because it was behind the British/Indian treaty line. However, we know there were at least some hunting camps, several established by Andrew BAKER evidently, in the Ashe Co area as early as the late 1750s. Bishop Spangenberg supposedly found some evidence of habitation in there when he made his trek in 1753. (Jeff, if I have this wrong, please correct me).
