Depending on the time period, this could refer to any number of things. If a close relative was orphaned, perhaps the family actually adopted him. I would go to the Guardian records for the county (or counties) in which the adoptive family lived and see if you find anything. If no Guardian records, go to the regular court records. I personally found guardian records in the period right after the Civil War when my great grandfather was orphaned....so it's not impossible. Michele
