Civil War to Come to Life at Ashe County Public Library On February 3, the Ashe County Library will take visitors back in time to the War Between the States. The Living Historians of The 58th North Carolina Troops Preservation Society and the members of the Ashe County Historical Society will be presenting "The Civil War in Ashe County" from 9 am until 3 pm. Ashe County contributed many of her sons to the bloodiest war in American history, with soldiers fighting far from North Carolina in Gettysburg and Chickmauga. Many of them never returned to their beautiful mountains. This day-long program will honor their memories and the history of Ashe County's role in the war. The 58th North Carolina Troops Preservation Society will be providing an all-day exhibit of artifacts and reproduction items including uniforms, flags, photographs, weapons, and personal items that represent the military and civilian life of the citizens of Ashe County whose lives were forever altered by the war. The program will also feature presentations on specific areas of interest. Presentation times: 10:30--Women and the War: The Civilian Experience in Ashe County; 11:30--Flags and their Stories; 1:00 Ashe County's Role in the War. Living Historians will also be available throughout the day to answer questions and provide demonstrations. Information on the original members of the unit will be available for those who are tracing their genealogy. Those who are interested in taking part in Living History or the Descendants' Organization are welcome to come learn more about the 58th North Carolina Troops Preservation Society. The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend. Both children and adults will find the day entertaining and educational.
