I want to sincerely thank all of you who responded to my query on my Burchetts from Ashe County. I now know that I am in the right area of NC, and I also believe that somewhere along the line they did change their name from Burket (or a variation) to Burchette. Also, at some point in time, this family migrated from Ashe County, NC to Smyth County, VA, which is really just across the border. John & Elizabeth's son, Charles, which was born in Ashe County in 1872 married a Kathryn Baldwin and they had their children in Smyth County, VA (or at least 2 of them that I know were born there). If any of these names are familiar to anyone, please let me know. This has been a stumbling block for me for three years. It is so hard to do research long distance! Sharon Singleton Once again, thanks! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hargreaves" <Hargreaves@CITCOM.NET> To: <NCASHE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 13, 2000 3:24 PM Subject: Re: [NCASHE] BURCHETT/POND MTN. > Hi Sharon: I'm not a Burchett descendant or researcher, though I am a > Burkett descendant/researcher, but have some census records of Ashe Co. > which I checked > for you. > > There were no Burchetts in the 1870 census but the 1880 census in Chestnut Hill > Twp. listed the below in family #270: > John 23 > Isabell 33 > Estell 13 > John 9 > Lillie 6 > Charles 4 > Mary Nov. 1879 > > All were listed as born in NC. > > According to "The NC Gazetteer": > Pond Mountain is in northwest Ashe Co. Hi, I am just starting out trying to trace my family tree, unfortunately I have discovered that most of the people who had the information I need have passed away. Basically I am looking for information about the Blevins, Weaver and McNeil families from Ashe Co. I have traced my tree back to my paternal gr-grandfather, McKenzie Blevins born 1895, my maternal gr-gr-grandfather Addison Dolphus McNeil and my maternal gr-gr-grandmother Malissa Weaver McNeil. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Melissa
Sharon, There are some of us who are doing the BURKETTs of Ashe County - if they 'originated' in Ashe Co, they've probably had their name changed somewhere along the way from BURKETT. ----- Original Message ----- From: Sharon Singleton To: NCASHE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, June 13, 2000 1:31 PM Subject: [NCASHE] BURCHETT/POND MTN. Hi Beebonnie1! I notced your researching Farmer's in the Ashe area. My Farmers are from Ashe/Grayson area. I'd like to see if we're researching the same family. My ancestor is David Farmer b. 1788, married a Catharine Edwards, and had the following children: Thomas Ahart b.1817, Alford b. 1819, Elizabeth b. 1822, Henry b.1825, Rosamond b. 1827, Nancy b. 1829, Andrew b. 1831 , David Jr b. 1833, Lucinda b. 1836, Calvin b. 1839, and Isaac b. 1843 or 45. Do any of these sound familiar? Tracy
Hi, Don't have any info on Burchett but Pond Mtn *is* in Ashe County. I used to live near there. Most of my family is from that area (Pond Mtn/Horse Creek) but I don't have any Burchett's in my line. Hey...J. Graybeal. I am doing the Elliott; Farmer; and Sapp families, mainly. The Graybeals show up on the info that I have from the Elliott family . my mother in law was born in Ashe co; Her father was Rufus Rosekrantz Elliott m Bina Farmer. They left that area in 1902 for a move to Skagit co,Washington. Have you found them near your Graybeals at all? beebonnie1@aol.com
Hi Sharon: I'm not a Burchett descendant or researcher, though I am a Burkett descendant/researcher, but have some census records of Ashe Co. which I checked for you. There were no Burchetts in the 1870 census but the 1880 census in Chestnut Hill Twp. listed the below in family #270: John 23 Isabell 33 Estell 13 John 9 Lillie 6 Charles 4 Mary Nov. 1879 All were listed as born in NC. According to "The NC Gazetteer": Pond Mountain is in northwest Ashe Co. It has an altitude of 5000 feet. The top of the mountain is a large level plateau covered with bluegrass and containing several small ponds. It's said to have been named by Peter Jefferson in 1749. There's also a Pond Mountain Township in northwest Ashe Co. Cathie >I am new to the list and would like to know if anyone else is researching >BURCHETTs? Hey Ruby! You can probably go to wal-mart photo department in Boone NC which is near Ashe Co. I used to work there and they do have a machine that you can use to copy photos with for like $7. I assume that this picture is old enough where copy right laws would not be up held. If you would like to call them, the number is 828-262-0254 and ask for the photo lab. Hope this helps for you! Just a suggestion. Look in yellow pages for photo copy services. My local provider uses cannon printer and scanner equipment. They produce excellent color copies that supposedly will last many years. They just charged me a couple dollars for 8 1/2 by 11 copies. You can get a copy there and then scan it into your home computer and edit and modify as you want to if you have the proper equipment and soft ware. good hunting, jim ----Original Message Follows---- From: PB112162@aol.com Reply-To: NCASHE-L@rootsweb.com To: NCASHE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NCASHE] picture Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 01:09:18 EDT Ruby, I have had great success with taking a good 35mm camera picture of the picture and having my local photo developing company into blowing it up. I have done this with over 30 old, old family pictures from 3 x 5 to 11 X 14 in size. They will enlarge until enlargement starts to distort the picture.
