Would someone do a lookup on the 1920 Census for This family; Edward,Betsy,Butler and Rex Roark. They might be living(they were in the 1910 Census) with a Badger Family. Hello, In my previous post it was pointed out to me that I confused folks...sorry, I am confused myself! His marriage took place in RUTHERFORD County, But am looking for the county in which he was born, possibly ASHE, or surrounding counties in NC. Thanks again! Darcy 0:) Darcy Tolliver-Noonkester in Maryland MY WALKER'S Joshua Walker was born in 1819. He died around 1898?. He seems to be buried in Little Rock,Pulaski Co. Ark. He has a marriage license in Rutherford County,NC. He married Elizabeth Hunt on 28 Nov. 1844.

His daughter, MARY WALKER b. 1861, m. FELIX TOLIVER ...these are my gr grandparents on my paternal side. Thanks & hope to hear from some new 'cousins'!! I checked the "Ashe Co. NC Cemetery Records" and there was no Hurley listed dying about 1900 - 1901. There was a James A. HURLEY, Jr. born 24 Sept. 1878 who died 26 Feb. 1898. He was buried in the James A. Hurley Family Cemetery in Helton Twp., 1.25 miles south of the NC - VA state line. If Lottie was married to him she certainly married young and wasn't married for long. There was another Hurley, Leander, who died in 1898 but he was born in 1837 and was buried in Walnut Hill Twp. so doesn't sound like a good possibility. Thanks, John. I'd had that listing and then saw in the "Cemetery Records" that Isabelle SHEPHERD, wife of David SAPP, was the daughter of Melvin and Elizabeth SHEPHERD. Even though I know there are bound to be some errors in the cemetery printouts, and I suspect that's where the error is, I took that off the definite list while trying to find out the accuracy. Cathie >I have Isabell as Isabella, mar. to David Sapp, son of James and Nancy Jones Sapp. >I have no children listed for them.
It appears to me that Robbinsville is in Graham County...if I am reading my atlas correctly.
Hi, Is Robbinsville NC located in Cherokee Co? I believe it is, but not sure. Thanks, Carolyn
Hi Cathie, I have a question for you, if you don't mind. I also descend from Almira. I was wondering if you would know what Almira "Myra" DUNN looked like. I have a picture from a cousin in Virginia (Henry Hamm) that is supposed to be of Almira and daughter Rosie WELCH (married Joshua HAM). Henry says that he is not sure which one is which. I tend to think that Almira is the smaller stout one, as my grandfather favors the taller lady. Can you offer any help? - Dave RE: On 17-Jun-00, Hargreaves wrote: >Thanks, John, for your reponse to my Shepherd - Dunn query. Hi, Thanks to all who answered by question about Lucinda Blevins. You all are great!!! Linda,Roanoke,VA
Thanks, John, for your reponse to my Shepherd - Dunn query. My interest derives from my descent from the mother of Elizabeth DUNN, also named Elizabeth and b. ca 1780 VA, through her daughter Almira "Myra" who married George Washington WELCH. I don't know the maiden name of this older Elizabeth or the given name of her husband, though census records reveal that he was born in England. He was apparently deceased by Mar. 1842 when Elizabeth Dunn bought land in Grayson Co., VA. According to my records Gardner and Elizabeth SHEPHERD had children Melvin C., Zilphia, Matilda, Isabell, Fielden, Calvin, and Amanda. I have spouses for Melvin, Matilda, and Calvin but not the others. Cathie >Gardner Shepherd b. 4 Jun 1824, d. 30 Jul 1880, mar. Elizabeth Dunn b. 12 Apr 1817. >Gardner was the son of William H. Shepherd Gardner and Elizabeth were the parents of Melvin C. Shepherd mentioned earlier on this list.
The only Lucinda listed was born 5 June 1855, died 24 April 1934, buried in cemetery Z10 (Alleghany Cty, NC - Mount Carmel Ch. of Brethern (1888) Prathers Creek Twp). While we are on the topic of cemetaries in Ashe County and look ups, could anyone tell me if there are any Duvall's listed in any of the cemetaries, 1860 and prior? Kellie
Hi All, Does anyone have access to the Ashe County cemetery records that could look up Morris Blevins or maybe M. A. Blevins who is supposed to be burried in Ashe Co. Cem B06? What I am really looking for is to see if his wife Lucinda is also buried there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Linda,Roanoke,VA Researching: BLEVINS, DOWELL, COMBS, ESTEP, FARMER, HILL, BARKER, PRIVETT, GORE, THOMPSON, MILLS, WALKER, SIZEMORE all from areas of WILKES, WAKE, ASHE, IREDELL NC and GRAYSON, CARROLL, WYTHE, WASHINGTON VA, eventually to MERCER, MCDOWELL WV
Ashe County borders only Grayson County in VA, Johnson County in TN, Wilkes, Watauga, Alleghany Counties in NC.
John, Thanks, I can use them, I have Margaret & Leander's childrens names based on their daughter (my great grandmother) Amanda J. Shepherd's autograph book but I do not have any birth dates. I know they had migrated to Rook County Kansas. It was there that Amanda met & married my great grandfather Jasper "Joe" Buck. I would like to gather any information on the Shepherd side also if anyone has anything. I believe Leander worked on Margaret's father's farm as a farm laborer (that is what is listed on the 1870 Census for Ashe, Laural Twp. If anyone has any information or can help in anyway I would greatly appreciate it.
Dear List, Last night I finished reading the May 2000 issue of Wildlife in NC. In this issue is an article, "Along the Tennessee 1799 Border", which describes the formation of the boundary in western NC and eastern TN after the Revolutionary War. The article traces the paths of the commissioned group of men responsible for creating this line. Members of the group listed were as follows: Captain Issac Weaver of Ashe County, Robert Henry, John Strother, Col. Joseph McDowell, Col. David Vance, Mussendine Matthews and his son John, Major James Neely, Major B. Collins, James Hawkins, George Penland, Robert Logan and George Davidson . Henry and Strother were the two surveyors on the trip, McDowell and Vance had been prominent in western NC since the Rev. War. Matthews was a popular leader who represented the people of Iredell County in the General Assembly. Major James Neely served as commissary and the chain bearers included Major B. Collins, James Hawkins, George Penland, Robert Logan, George Davidson and John Matthews. There were two packhorse handlers who were unidentified. A Mr. Curry provided lodging for the group near Roaring Creek. A Mr. Collier provided whiskey and served as a guide near Limestone, TN Geographical places mentioned include: Pond Mtn, Stagg Creek, Big Spring Mtn., upper and lower rye patch, Stone Mtn., Horsepen Creek, New River, Holston River, Whitetop Mtn., Laurel Bloomery (TN), the Laurel Creeks, Payne Gap, Roundabout Creek, Leander Mtn., State Line Ridge, Star Gap, Watauga River, Yellow Mtns., Doe River, Roaring Creek, "the road from Morganton to Jonesborough", Roan Mtn., Little Rock Knob, Camp Strother, Limestone (TN), Iron Mtn., Unaka Mtn., Hollow Popular Creek, Greasy Cove, Nolichucky River, Bald Mtn., Big Bald Mtn., State Line Shoals, Devils Creek, Sam's Gap, Sugarloaf Knob, Boon's Cove, Flint Mtn., Little Laurel Creek, Painted Rock, Paint Creek, French Broad River, Warm Springs (now known as Hot Springs in Madison Co.), Smoky Mtn., Mount Sterling (Haywood Co.) Painted Rock - in 1790 the pictures of some humans, wild beasts, fish and fowls could be plainly seen in red paint, some 20 and 30 feet above ground. When Strother described Painted Rock in 1799 he said that it bears but few traces of previously being painted. The article is well written and interesting. William D. I wonder if anyone doing research on ASHE county, TN. could help me in finding out if John Roark who married Nancy Chambliss was born there or who his parents were or if he married there. In what information I have it is stated that he was probably born there in 1774 give or take a few years. Supposedly he went to Smith Co. TN. from there and his first son "William" who married Margaret Reed was born in Smith Co. TN.. I am desperately trying to find out this information for my granddaughter and since I am 80 years old I need all the help I can get. I would ever be grateful to anyone who could help me. The drive there from TX. would be rough on me. THANKS, Perlon Roark
