    1. [NCASHE] Joshua/Jesse Cox
    2. Dear Listmembers I found the following information at this website: http://genloc.com/JesseCox/ Jesse Cox was born about 1792 in what is now Ashe County, North Carolina. Nothing is known about Jesse parents, with the possible exception that his mother died when he was born. (Joshua Cox of Ashe County is a primary candidate to be Jesse's father.) A farmer in Ashe County, Jesse enlisted in the War of 1812 on August 11, 1814 at Jefferson and served until his discharge on April 6, 1815 at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Shortly after that, on July 27, 1815 he married his wife, Thursey (or Thursa) Harper in Wilkes County. He and his wife are found in the Ashe County, North Carolina censuses of 1820 through 1860 where they raised their family. By 1870 they were living in Russell County, Virginia. According to an 1871 pension application he lived 12 miles east of Lebanon. In the 1880 census Jesse was a widower living with his son Wilson in Russell County. Jesse was about 92 years old when he died on January 4, 1884. Does anyone have further information on this Joshua Cox, possible father of Jesse? Michele Brooks

    3. hello. I am researching the Ashe Co Price family of William Price and Delilah Dickson. Do you have the Ancestors of George Price and Eliza Jenkins. I have the census records and marriage records but that is all I have on George. I am guessing that he is related through William and Delilah's oldest son Thomas. I don't have much on this Thomas either. Any info would be greatly appreciated. 3. I have been to the library and courthouse in Ashe. I concur with the previous poster to be sure and call and get the hours of business so you can adequately plan your time. The library has one of the best if not the best genealogy sections there. They also sell material at the front desk. Be sure and bring your wallet (lol). They also have a copy machine that costs 5 or 10 cents per copy so be sure to bring your coinage. The courthouse is open M - F. Their are two places to check out there. They are the register of deeds office which has the marriages, birth, and death records. The other is where they store the wills. There was a fire some time ago that burned some records but I still felt the collection was pretty extensive and easy to navigate. They also charge for copies but I didn't need coinage as they checked me out at the end and I paid one price. All of my info is on the old courthouse. I hear they are building a new one and might actually be in at by now. Does anybody know if it has been opened and if not when? I would also be interested in the surnames with dates that you are chasing. It is quite possible that someone on this board can give you some more specific information and lookups before you go. It appears that Roten is the correct one; it appears more often. I have wondered if she had been married more than once ; that there were two persons of different generations mixed up; but nothing conclusive for the variations. I have come across individuals who change their names for different reasons; the surname of Metcalf in Illinois is Midkiff in WVA. I assume that it was caused by poor spelling and pronunciation. 3. Darcey There is an old book by Nelly Sherman titled something like "the life of John Calvin Davis". As I recall he was born in KY and married a Catherine Toliver in IN. They moved on to ILL and had many descendants there. There is a picture in the book of John and he is very noticeably Indian. I read part of the book at the Newberry Library in Chicago but was not able to copy any or complete the book because of time. The dates in John Calvin were before the 1800's as I recall.
