Subject: John Ashley age 83 in 1910 Date: Mon, 09 Oct 2000 18:50:09 -0400 From: Jim & Pattie Hamill <hamill4@mindspring.com> To: "Ashe Cty., NC Mail List Ashe" <NCASHE-L-request@rootsweb.com> Dear list, I have not had any experience researching in North Carolina yet. I am looking for information on the following family. I have found a John Ashley age 83 in the 1910 Wise Cty., VA Census. It states that his place of birth was NC as were his father and mother. He appears to have been in the Civil War in a Confederate Army. He is also listed as being blind and a widow. He is the the household of his granddaughter. The census taker lists her place of birth as Virginia. Thank in advance, Patricia Hamill Knoxville, TN

NAMES OF ILLNESSES AND CAUSES OF DEATH Death certificates, obituaries, and cemetery records often list the cause of death, but seldom explain what the medical terms mean. Does anyone know how a person can trace the former name of a city? This past weekend, I was priviledged to see some old postcards that came down through my family, and I cannot find the names on an Atlas. They were not NC cities, but I thought someone on the list might know how to go about tracing the old names. I think the date would be early 1900's, since one postcard was cancelled in 1911. Thank you in advance for any assistance. Anna Belle - --------------------------------------------- A. B. Baker, who married George Washington Houck? Sure would appreciate any information you might share! Sheila

Tracy, It's been a while since I've been up Hwy 194 from Lansing but I believe you pass a church a few miles before you get to the Grayson/VA border. Seems like the church is on the left if you're coming from Lansing. The church I'm thinking of hasn't been in use for quite some time b/c it's kind of worn looking. From Lansing, you just turn at the light (there's only one) and follow that road (it's Highway 194N) and it will take you right through Helton. It's a beautiful area but kind of windy road. Again, I'm not sure if that's the church you're talking about but if it if you're looking for a church in Helton/Big Helton, 194N from Lansing will take you there. Hope this helps, Shana Anderson -----Original Message----- From: JoTrJaTr93@cs.com <JoTrJaTr93@cs.com> To: NCASHE-L@rootsweb.com <NCASHE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, September 20, 2000 3:02 PM Subject: [NCASHE] Big Helton Primitive Baptist Church >Hi >Does anyone know where the Big Helton Primitive Baptist Church is?
