I have had several questions about microfilm records from the NC Archives: http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/default.htm This is the address for the home page of the NC Archives. Here you will find their mailing address and e-mail address. You must provide a mailing address as they will not answer by e-mail. Some Ashe county records that are available are: Apprentice Bonds, 1876-1923, 1 reel Bastardy Bonds, 1876- 1880, 1883, 1 reel County Court of Pleas & Quarters, 1806-1866, 2 reels Superior Court Minutes, 1807-1818, 1834-1959 , 10 reels Equity Minutes, 1824-1868: Land Entries, 1870-72; Tax Judgments, 1872-74, 1 reel Record of estates, 1853-1873, 1 reel Record of Settlements, 1869- 1966, 5 reels Index to Births, 1913-1979, 1 reel Index to Deaths, 1913-1979, 1 reel Index to Delayed Births, 1 reel Deeds, 1800-1955, 57 reels Record of Wills, 1816-1966, 3 reels. There is a book that lists all the Counties & All the records available from the Archives for about $12.00. "Guide to Research Materials in the North Carolina State Archives: County Records" It is not necessary to order all the microfilm in a set. For instance there are 3 reels of Wills. The first reel would probably cover most of the early material and you can order just the first reel. Hope this is of some help. Sandra
Am interested in developing ancestors of Leota Woodruff, and siblings - Posey, Lena, etc., who were born in NC - believed to be Ashe County. Leota was born in about 1875, who appeared in 1920 Fed.Census for Roanoke City, Va., and was married to Isaac Preston Boyer. Thank you one and all for any info. Tim

The NC Archives microfilmed the marriage records from each county in the 1960's. You can purchase the microfilm from the NC Archives for $12.00 a roll and use it at your local library or where ever you can find a reader. I have the entire Marriage index from Yancey County on one roll, and the actual marriage certificates from 1850 to 1900 on another roll. Available for Ashe County are: Marriage Bonds, 1799--1868, 5 reels Marriage Certificates, 1853-1881, 1 reel Marriage Registers, 1853-1966, 1 reel Sandra
Hi, A good source for the general rules for most holdings in most states and their individual counties is given in Everton's "Handy Book for Genealogists" or similar publications. Usually, publications with this information are difficult to locate, because they are not widely known. Other sources would be individual web sites. The policies for what records may be available might be posted on the NC Archives website, which I have as: http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/ The general rule of thumb is that you can obtain a copy of marriage records: - after 1962 from the Dept. of Human Resources, Vital Records Branch (after 1930 for deaths) - ater 1910 from the County Courthouse - after 1820 from the NC Archives - it is assumed that most NC marriage records prior to 1820 have not survived. Helpful hints: I ALWAYS try to avoid handling original records WHENEVER POSSIBLE. Some original records are in perilous condition, and should not be touched at all. Some County Courthouses have policies that folks cannot photocopy them under any circumstances. For example, I have handled court records in Virginia that were restored at a cost of $1,500.00 per book, I think the figure was. In cases where the County no longer lets you photocopy, they usually either have photocopies on microfilm OR they encourage you to get photocopies from the State Archives. (The Archives usually carry photocopies on microfilm.) Also, the LDS libraries may be able to get a photocopy for you. Finally, it is usually cheaper to obtain copies from individual County Courthouses. If you have a number of records that you need copies of, then it is even cheaper to get your photocopies from microfilm by sitting down at the microfilm reader and doing the copying yourself. - Dave RE: On 03-Nov-00, BRN2ROAM@aol.com wrote: >Good Morning, >Would anyone care to comment on the appropriate NC guidelines for where to >write for copies of marriage certificates? I have found some pretty old ones in the Courthouse in Ashe Co. The courthouse has moved or is being moved to a new building so right now might be harder to find them. I don't know if Raleigh has any or not. Good Morning, Would anyone care to comment on the appropriate NC guidelines for where to write for copies of marriage certificates? Is there a rule of thumb, so to speak, that all those before a date certain are only in the county courthouse while those after that date are in the archives in Raleigh? Thanks in advance for any assistance you may provide. Happy hunting.
According to my map, Peak Creek Township is in eastern Ashe Co bordering Wilkes Co. I suppose the township lines also extend to Allegheny Co. There is no town/city. On your map, follow NC 88 east out of Jefferson 10-12 miles and you should be in Peak Creek Township Carolinacf@aol.com wrote: > Hi, > Where exactly is Peak Creek Township, Ashe Co., NC. Please be advised that this posting regarding Marriage Bonds is an advertisement for fee based services that are available for free through various other means. This list is provided as a "commercial free" place to help subscribers freely share information and references. -----Original Message----- From: JMAltenhoff@aol.com [mailto:JMAltenhoff@aol.com] Sent: Monday, October 30, 2000 11:51 PM To: NCASHE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [NCASHE] Marriage Bonds -- I have created a web page for Marriage Bond Index of NC 1741-1868 <A HREF="http://marriagebondofnc.homestead.com/Home.html">marriagebondofNC </A> http://marriagebondofnc.homestead.com/Home.html This page is not complete and will not be complete for several months. There are over 8,000 Bride and 8,000 Groom microfilm pages that list all marriage bonds for all counties of NC. I will add new surnames weekly so please don't get discouraged if you do not see the surname you are looking for. I have discovered that once you obtain the Index page that you are looking for it is easier to contact the NC Archives and get a copy of the original Marriage Bond. If you would like a specific Surname added to the page you may send me an e-mail and I will put that name on my list to add ASAP. All I ask is that you send one e-mail per Surname. You may send as many Surnames as you like, but please do so separately so that I may easily alphabetize my list that I take with me. In the Subject area put MB of NC (this will get my attention) In the body of the e-mail type the surname you would like added in ALL CAPS. Best of Luck to you all in your search for your ancestors.
