Caroline, the Woodie cemetery on highway 18 is in Wilkes county near the Ashe-Wilkes county line. There are 19 graves. It is called Woodie, Walter Family cemetery. TWP stands for township. Ashe county is divided up into 19 townships, probably voting districts. I have no idea where Piney Ridge church is located. Lisa, Do you have any information on a "Rixie Woodie"? He lived at Glendale Springs and married Virginia Worley? Both are dead now but Virginia was my half sister. She was b about 1930 and Rixie b in the late 20's. He was also a half brother to Leonard Miller who also was married to another half sister of mine. I think they are still alive and living in Ashe county near Glendale Springs. I was born and raised near West Jefferson, but left there when I finished high school almost 50 years ago, so I have lost touch with most of the family there, but I would like to find out a little more about Rixie and his family if I could.. Thanks for any help. John
Caroline, Are you researching any surnames in Cherokee County? My Dad was Cherokee County bred, born and raise. Carol, Yes, I am researching the Woody/Woodie line, also the Stover, Self, Garrett, Dockery, Lunsford, Helton and Harkins/Hawkins. Stargell, Thompson, Grizzle, Taylor, and Justice also have a branch on the family tree. I sure there are some others, but have concentrated on the Woody line now for so long. I am sure Tobias Woody (my g-grandfather), b. 1805 in Ashe or Wilkes Co, NC, ties into Talton Woody's line, through his son William, but looking for it in writing! I have never seen Tobias listed with a family on a census, (as a son), or any document. We have this description of a piece of land, so we know he lived near Reddys River in NC. --Ashe County, NC--District no. 43 boundary: Beginning on the point of the ridge north of Larkin Shepherds, running a northwest course to the top of the Rich Nob, then an east course to Tobias Wooddy's thence to the top of the Blue Ridge, thence east along the mountain to the dividing line between Reddy's River and Mulberry, thence south with said ridge to the line of Dist. 44, thence to the beginning.-- I was born in Murphy, but grew up in Andrews and Topton. Caroline
Hi Lisa, Do you know if Talton b. 1756 or so (son of William and Sarah Persel Woody) is buried there? Have you ever seen his grave? Caroline
I am getting totally desperate. Have been helping or trying to help my daughter worked on this family for 5 years and have made absolutely no progress. Am doing this for the grandchildren, or would have already given up. My grandchildren's other grandmother was Nina HARRIS, married second to Zealous LOGGINS. She passed away in 1994 at age 60-63. Her parents were Nellie Ethel TESTERMAN and John Alexander HARRIS. Nellie had 14 children - she married very young [I was told about age 14] and died in the 1930s. HARRIS was much older than she was. Both are buried in the Scott-Blevins Cemetery in West Jefferson. My daughter went to the cemetery, saw the headstones and copied the dates. However, in the very messy divorce that followed, she lost that paper. So one of my problems is I need the dates from those two headstones. I am not able to travel due to health problems. Now for the rest of the problem. Nellie's parents were Coller [that is the way it was pronounced but have no idea of the actual spelling] TESTERMAN and Sarah/Susan PARSONS. They are buried somewhere in West Jefferson. It was late when my daughter was there and she was told she would be taken to the cemetery the next day, but something happened and she didn't make it. I would just about sell my soul for the information on those two tombstones. We have looked EVERYWHERE under every spelling for Coller we could imagine for information on him. Have sat for HOURS in front of the microfilm reading going on over Ashe county census returns for something that remotely resembles his name and cannot find it. As I said, there were 14 of Nellie Ethel TESTERMAN and John Alexander HARRIS. The ALL as far as I know went by the name HARRIS. However the daughter of one of the sons [her last name was HARRIS] found her dad's birth certificate by accident one day and it gave his name as BLEVINS. If ANYONE can shed some light on this for me, I will personally nominate you for sainthood!!
